Wetlands has always been where I fish for these. Very good drop rate there. Also something for Alliance to do while they wait for the boats.

The coast of Barrens by Ratchet also frequently has pools of these and, for Horde (esp Orcs and Trolls) is a profitable way to level up their fishing skill early on. Just hop the hill behind the starting area in Durotar.

If people don't know why this fish is popular is because it's for Alchemists. Sell them for a high price, 20s to 1g.

It is a low recipe in the alchemy proffesion. Most people don't want to spend the time fishing just to level it up so they go and grab these.

Also used to make Elixir of Water Breathing , critical for any quest that requires you to spend a lot of time underwater, if you don't have class or racial skills to help you.

The west coast of Silverpine, north of the Sepulcher, is a good place to fish for these. The mobs are low level, people aren't there much, and there's about 5 or 6 pools of blackmouths. There aren't any other types of pools, either, and as many as five fish in a single pool.

I think the best place to fish those, is Ratchet at the bridge. Every 10-15 i got atleast 4 Oily Blackmouth.

The oil that comes from these is also used in an enchanting skill to increase you fishing as well

I catch these from normal waters, Im fishing at Booty Bay at the moment, got arround 7 already. Have been fishing for 20 mins soon. So its not required to fish in Oily Blackmouth Pools, but it will prob help alot!

when i was on the flightpath from auberdine to ashenvale i was looking at the water and found around 3 schools of these along the shore. made me go back and fish them. on the second school i got a Weather-Beaten Journal, that dropped from a Watertight Trunk along with light leathers and bolt od woolen. made me run through the coast of auberdine and i found more 3 schools. overall 31 Oily Blackmouths in 20 minutes. not bad for a level 24 ^_^

Also, for anyone starting out and might plan on having an alchemist as an alt, don't do what I did. I sold a LOT of these and then got to some of the underwater quests in Stranglethorn Vale. Then, I had to go catch them again to send them to my alt and make the Elixir of Water Breathing. Save them; they will be very advantageous for the late 30/early 40 quests in STV.

If you're fishing these as a lv70... actually lv50+ Tanaris had many more pools and they respawned early enough that once I had run the coastline the pools at the other end were up.

I wasted a good hour and a half in Ratchet, fished 1 pool, and then no others spawned during that time. Only caught 1 or 2 out of 10 casts from just fishing the regular water, so it's definately worth it to find pools of these fish.

Also you will often catch Stranglekelp out of these pools, so if you don't have an herbalist or don't want to go swimming around picking it... just fish for these first and you'll probably have more than enough to make as many pots as you have fish for.

Along the Longshore in Westfall is a great place to fish these. Lvl 11-19 murlocs plague the beach.
Still, a great place to fish for any level.

57 raw rainbow albacore (1 in 2 drop rate)
14 oily blackmouth (1 in 8 drop rate)
41 raw slitherskin mackerel (1 in 3 drop rate)

The raw rainbow albacore can be used for cooking from skill level 50+. And, the oily blackmouth fetches a nice price on the auction because of alchemy. Oily Blackmouth is used for 3 different potions:

- water breathing
- increase melee
- something else...

i have found the best spot is westfall if you roam the coast every few or 30-40feet theres a lesser pool i useuly pick 3-7 per and by time i hit the end they respawned theres about 20 along the coast and 3 wreckage ones

Now that the Shattering has occurred, there are several schools of Oily Blackmouth, as well as Firefin Snapper, along the coastline of Azshara's bay area.

Stranglethorn Vale is the best place to farm these. I also managed to fish up the chest containing the consumable that teaches you how to track fish, which is a nice bonus if you're farming these for your alchemist and fish for other professions like cooking as well.

best place i've found for these is the oily blackmouth schools up and down the beach of darkshore. you usually get about 4 per school, and they are all over, i usually fish 3 or 4 schools every 10 min or less. when u get further south of lor'danel u get a mix of blckmouth and firefin snapper schools.

Went to Moonglade to fish these according to Wowhead, and only pools available are Raw Greater Sagefish.

farming for oily blackmouth in wetlands is not recommended for extended periods exceeding 15 mins;
I have out fished the spawn rate of the pools in the area.
during my stay I have fished:
33x oily blackmouths
17x firefin snappers
3x iron bound trunks
(note that i spent time fishing too far from the pools on occasion)
(flying mount speed is fastest attainable by players atm, and had water walking @ my disposal)

you will average 5 per pool in this area

As of patch 4.2, Moonglade only has Raw Greater Sagefish nodes.

When it said that you could find them easily in Stranglethorn I went there initially, but since cata there were only like 4 groups of them, I'm not sure if it was just me at that time, or if thats how it is since Cata. But i'd never gone there, for me I go to Darkshore, they are always there

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but I have a teeny suspicion that Oily Blackmouth schools (at least some of them) in Darkshore seem to share a spawn spot with Firefin Snapper schools. I've been farming the Blackmouths to make the free action potion and i've been noticing that when I loop back to the start of the pool spawn spots in Darkshore, I'm coming across a lot more Firefin Snapper Schools and not as many Blackmouth schools. The only way to confirm this is to fish up the firefin snappers to see what spawns in those locations.

I'll edit this post as I continue to fish, but based on current observation, there are a few Blackmouth schools that share spots with Firefin Snapper schools (at least in Darkshore). I can't speak for the other zones since I don't farm in those areas, so if anyone has any insight on spawn sharing in other zones, just feel free to reply to my comment!

These can be fished @ the dock at the end of the new Darkmoon Faire Island (when the monthly faire is in town). There is not a pool of 'em, but if you fish in the open water on the right ramp (but probably anywhere there), you can fish up a bunch. And you might also manage to fish up a Sea Pony while you are at it.

On my level 15 Night Elf Druid i got my first Oily Blackmouth at Lor'danel in Darkshore at level 45 fishing. However, i didn't get another Oily Blackmouth until i was level 68 fishing. At this level of fishing i was leveling fishing up +1 per catch.

The best place I found to fish Oily Blackmouths is off coast of Ratchet near Fray Island. I found at least 2 pools there.

dark moon faire is by faaaaaar the best place to fish for oily's. i would recomend farming them heavy when the fair is in town. darkshore is 2nd & ratchet is 3rd......but i'd just wait if i could..........yeah, its that much better in dark moon!

I've found that the best place to farm this fish is in the Northern Stranglethorn area, the pools make it so much easier, even if they are shared with Firefin Snapper ones...

I found The zoram strand to be good for pools in like 20 min i got 50 or so fish and i was also mining copper at the same time :)

If you're not after a huge pile of them and don't want to go all that far, there are usually a decent number of schools at Ratchet and south of there, plus several out on the nearby islands.

Darkshore's a great place to fish these up. Circling Nazj'vel to the south, I found four schools, as well as an additional Firefin Snapper School. I also found a few more nodes while travelling the coast and as I returned south, I crossed in to nearby Ashenvale for two more schools.

Tried Duskwood - don't bother, only Sagefish schools. Got mine on Longshore coast Westfall.
Lots of Oily Blackmouth & Firefin Snapper schools. There are little 'villages' of Murlocs but they are level 10 - 11.

The data for the fishing location map pins seem to be out of date. The worst example is Darkmoon Island which only has Darkmoon Daggermaw in open water now.

The best way to find fishing pools now is to look instead under Database > Objects > Fishing Pools. You'll see that Oily Blackmouth School is up to date and Darkshore is probably your best bet.

This fish along with Firefin Snapper make me very angry during the fishing tourney. catching 15 incorrect fish during the tourney sucks :(

Took my level 20 horde character to The Savage Coast southeast of Grom'Gol Base Camp and within about a half an hour fished:

16 Firefin
14 Oily Blackmouth
2 Iron Bound Chests

Headed to Darkshore to see if I could find some of these fish. I started at Lor'Danel, followed the coast to the northern part of the map, then back down to the Ruins of Auberdine. Took 10-15 minutes, found 4 Oily Blackmouth pools, 2 Firefin Snapper School, and one pool of Floating Debris. Came away with 16 Oily Blackmouth, 4 Firefin Snapper, and some bits and pieces of leather and wool/silk bolts from the debris.
If you're looking for the fish to level up alchemy also keep an eye out for Stranglekelp off the coast, I picked up 9 in between fishing, as well as some Mageroyal and Earthroot along the cliffs.

Edited to add: I spent the next 15 minutes following the water in from the Ruins of Auberdine and found 11 more Oily Blackmouth Pools which gave me 29 more fish.
