Item is currently bugged and unobtainable on beta, and I imagine live servers too when the expansion goes live, the whispering stargazer fish, should have a use effect to allow you to throw it in to schools in Azj'khaet in order to get the Awoken Coelacanth, I've been reporting it daily for 3-4 weeks.

In order to get this fish you need to have the Whispers of the Deep buff.

You get this buff after you throw 10 Whispering Stargazer in Azj-Kahet (any water spot works, do not need to have a school of fish in front of you).

While you throw the fishes you get a stacking buff that turns to Whispers of the Deep after few seconds that you got the 10th stack.

Each stack last 5 minutes and throwing a new fish refresh the duration while adding a stack.
Once the buff turns to Whispers of the Deep the duration cannot be extended anymore (but you can get a new buff if it expires throwing again 10 fishes).

EDIT 1
Suggested skill for Azj-Kahet is 375 (according to the in-game compendium).
In order go over 300 you need lures, food buff (cursed ghoul food from Mereldar weekly fishing derby Hallowfall Fishing Derby gives you 30 skill points and 150 perception) and others buff you can find in order to reach 375+.

In addition, since it's a rare fish, you need to raise perception with flask, throwing fish back to water, the over mentioned food Ghoulfish Delight and a good fishing pool (maybe the TWW ones) with enchants.

Later you can get Algari Weaverline (from Tailoring) in order to have permanent empowerments while you gather Algari Anglerthread and Algari Seekerthread.

I tested with various level of skill and perception.

With 350+ skill (+48 coming from equipment and Ghoul Fish food buff) and with 475 of perception (from equipment, flask and food), basically I was able to catch the rare fish in 1-2 try with those stats.
Each time I got 1 Awoken Coelacanth, I had to throw 10 Whispering Stargazer to get again the buff, but with these fishing stat I was able to never waste a buff.

I even tested with less stats (mainly when I lost the Ghoul Fish buff) and even with 320+ skill and 325+ perception I was able to not waste the buff (with slightly more tries per catch, but nothing problematic).

With these stat I was able to catch the fishing anywhere in Azj-Kahet.

Tried to get this with fishing skill 98 and it didn't work. I got up to 108 before it disappeared (the buff), so you likely need much higher skill.

Pulled one from the open waters of the Salien Gutters in Azj-Kahet with relatively low skill - 315 fishing, +15 perception from the Ghoulfish and +45 perception from the Goldengill Trout, no other buffs.

With a base skill of 230 I tried for 5 minutes with 9 stacks of Whisper buff, at the Secret spot mentioned by Dicceyy. While I looted a couple of green fishes in these 5 minutes, the rest was grey. Sadly no Awoken Coelacanth, which was the last fish I needed for Derby Dash achievement. I do believe you can get lucky though, even at low skill.

No biggie, I'll get it done next Saturday.

Gunna squash all these claims for you need all the fishing skill + perception to get this. You don't, I just did the achievement today with 310 skill and 50 perception.

Edit: Did more fishing 9/1/24 with various amounts of buff levels and starting to think it is just rng at this point. No rod (cant turn in luminous pearl which means no weaverline), no crafted or other fishing equipment, just buffs provided by available fish. Max level of buff at 110 perception and 10 fishing and still at times took up to 4 minutes to catch one, other times it was first cast.

Got one today with just 211 skill at the "secret spot". Just the buff from 10x stargazer and 1x cursed fish buff. Not even lure etc.

Caught one today for the Derby Achievement - had 252 + 8 skill and got it straight away from my second cast after applying the buff! Good luck!

This fish is EXTREMELY difficult to catch unless you have high fishing skill.

In Week 1, with 130 Khaz Algar Fishing, this was the only fish that eluded me in the entire achievement. I spent 20 mins fishing for it and couldn't catch a single one. My fishing rod was R4.

In Week 2, with 170 Khaz Algar Fishing, I spent 40 mins fishing and still didn't catch a single one. This time, I also wore a R3 fishing cap.

I managed to fish 4 of these. 4 of them and none have counted towards the achievement. its my only one left. Is there something im missing? i opened a ticket with blizzard cos im sure its a bug but maybe there are others having this issue?

I'm getting "There aren't any fish here" error text in the secret spot inside the delve, under the bridge at the entrance where the rope is. Can't fish anywhere in that water.

EDIT: As MalenInsekt has pointed out, do not actually enter the delve lol

Tip & Advice for fellow Anglers!

I had higher output results with:

- Maximum Applied Stats to the Weaverline
- Maximum Fishing Level
- 10x Use of Whispering Stargazer (This almost guaranteed 9/10 attempts to acquire this fish as it applies a buff directly associated with it for 5 minutes).
- 5minutes worth of added perception

Once I had all of the above applied, 9 in 10 attempts to acquire the fish was successful under the associated buff. I did not need to fish in a particular fishing spot, or any at all infact, just clear open water worked for me in all interactions.

Caught one today with 184 fishing skill, had the Ghoulish delight food buff, Bismuth Fisherfriend pole and fishing hat, cursed queenfish, goldengill blessing, and the buff from Whispering Stargazers. One my 3rd stack of buffs fished it up on the 3rd cast.

196 Fishing + 8 for my Rod, No bonuses - no lures - no extra perception from food/fish/items , just got the stargazer buff and dropped the rod in the water out from of the Delve - first try....
Didnt have the derby buff FML.

Caught yesterday at 227 fishing with 0 buffs and Shadowlands rod. Nothing special, random water in AK with the stargazer buff active.

Attempted today at about 130 fishing ( ended at 140), used 20 Whispering Stargazers at the spot below Tak-Rethan Abyss Delve Entrance and managed about 70 catches all of which were trash items.

Was using a Q5 Bismuth Fisherfriend, Ghoulfish & Nibbling Minnow Perception buff and a Bismuth Bitterling skill buff so somewhere in the region of 140-160 skill at maximum and 280-290 Perception across all attempts.

Either very unlucky or need to get the fishing skill higher. I'll update this later if I try again at a higher skill and it succeeds.

There is a lot of "magic" and "nebulous things" in this comments section. You don't need any special lures or potions.

I got mine with 300 + 8 skill and nothing special but a green +238 peception Bismuth Fisherfriend. It took 5 casts after throwing 10 Whispering Stargazer in and fishing in open water in a random place.

I fished by the entrance to the Tak-Rethan Abyss with the following buffs and caught it on my first cast. I'm not sure how much was RNG, but hopefully it helps someone who does not have max skill or tools and wants to go for the achievement.

Side note:
To make Ghoulfish Delight, you can purchase the recipe for 10 Mereldar Derby Mark from Captain Oathmyt; it requires level 35 cooking skill to make and the food is soulbound). You need to filet Cursed Ghoulfish to get the Prepared Ghoulfish by using the Fresh Filet skill in your cooking pane. It was easy enough to level my cooking to 35 after playing for a couple weeks and collecting basic mats.

Finally fished this guy up in OPEN WATERS for the achievement at 268 fishing skill points. I only had the buffs to skill and Perception you can get by throwing fish back, i.e. Cursed Ghoulfish, Nibbling Minnow and Bismuth Bitterling, and the regular bismuth rod made by my engineering self. I had stocked up 80 Stargazers but actually got it in the first two minutes of buff.

I tried to get a second one from schools of fish, but with no luck. For the past two weeks I tried to get this guy for the achievement with fishing skill below unlocking Azj-Kahet level (225)—with zero success. Only ever got other fish from pools and grey items from open waters. So in my personal experience I can't recommend going for the derby achievement without having Azj-Kahet show up in your fishing log @ 225 skill points. Or maybe I'm just exceptionally unlucky.

Unsure if this is helpful or not but I just got it after about 10 casts with grey items. My fishing skill at the time of catching it was 184+10 from throwing in 1 Bismuth Bitterling to get additional 10 on my fishing skill.

I got one of these right after I reached 200 fishing skill (with +8 from my 550 mid quality bishmut fisherfriend with 200 perception)

I was below 100 fishing skill when I tried 2 times to fish this with the stargazer buff and didn't get any. I leveled my skill up to 180 before trying again, and got nothing, but when i reached 199 skill I got the buff again to try my luck, and after reaching 200 skill, I got the coelacanth from the very next cast. Now I'm off to try my luck again because I didn't have the derby buff on for the achievement =')

Just caught with 243 fishing, lv 5 fisherfriend, goldengill blessing, ghoulish delight (+30 fishing). Took 20 stargazers. Caught at "the spot" but it might just be copium :)

alright babes, because it took forever to find the info. this can only come from open water in azj-kahet after using 10 stargazers, which can be caught in pools in isle of dorn. its easiest to catch if you are above 225 fishing as thats what is required in the fishing guide for azj. good luck

So I finished my quest and was looking to get this last for my achiv and went to the spot when 40 minutes were left on my buff. I had 170 fishing skill when I went to the spot. Fished for 20 minıutes and gained 27 skill meanwhile, got the fish and the achievement with 197 fishing skill and only whispering buff with r5 green pole and hat fishing gear. Until the hook, only got gray junk from fishing.

To be clear, the Explorers' League rope is at 57.5, 77.5. After jumping down from the web bridge outside Tak-Rethan Abyss, you'll find a cave. Enter the cave and jump off the bridge you find inside. The rope, and the pool to fish from, is down there.

I did get it with 220 fishing using that open water spot Dice suggested outside the delve during the derby. I was probably lucky, but I it's not a huge amount of money and if it's the last one you need, may want to give it a shot. Also, it does seem to consume the buff after you catch one. It also seems like a decent way to level fishing too. I got a lot of skillups on the way to catching it. Good luck to everyone out there going for it!

You'll need to be in Azj-Kahet and throw 10 Whispering Stargazer into any open water and wait for you buff to change then you'll have 5 min to fish it up. Recommended to have 200+ Fishing also.

If you're like me and have been WAITING for this fish to appear as one of the derby fish in order to get the achievement and the mount....

DON'T.

As long as the derby is active, and you have the buff, you can go down into spiderland with your 10 whispering stargazer, and fish it up in open waters.\

I have 300 +60 fishing, plus Aqirite Fisherfriend 590 with 329 perception, 18 weaverline, and the ghoulfish buff.

Tossed in my Stargazer and 3rd cast got the achievement and the mount.

Went to the Secret Spot and got it on the second cast with just 300 fishing and the Bismuth Fisherfriend. Got the whole Derby Dash done today from scratch. Took about 2 hours to get fishing skill from 1 to 300.

You only get one catch of this rare fish per 10 Awakened Stargazers. Once you catch the fish, the Whispering Stargazer buff becomes "Whispers gathering" and you need to toss in 10 more. The fact that you need this fish for the The Sushi Special recipe is insane. At least it's just one per craft.

The requirements seem to be quite random - I got 300 Khaz Algar Fishing, + 13 Fishing Skill from the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole (yep, Northrend one; I just love the water breathing from it :-D), +32 Perception enchant on it. I then Just threw in the 10 whispering fish to get the buff and fished the Awoken one in about 10 casts (at the entrance to the Tak-Rethan Abyss delve).

Been trying to get this for weeks, max fishing, have both achievements for the weaverline, throwing the fish in the water for the buff, fishing in open water. I just keep fishing up grey items.

When you accumulate Stargazer's while farming slum sharks, you can eventually cash 10 in for a Coelacanth. I can get it on my first cast after throwing 10 extremely consistently. If you have low fishing, buff up, keep on fishing.

I have tried to slow chum these, for hours, it does not work. It seems you must throw 10, and your buff converts.

It is fairly profitable to buy the stargazers off auctionhouse and convert them. That would be an very profitable bot farm.

I fished this guy up with a single stargazer thrown in, not 10. Had 21 stargazers and the two first 10x buffs gave trash and the last single stargazer enabled me to finish the achi for mount during derby.
Fishing skill maxed with rare algaripole, +10 lure and green hat and 10+3 from weaverline, foodbuff etc. Not sure if anyone else has noticed that you don't need 10x buff.

259+24 fishing, weaverline at +31 perception. Caught it on the 7th cast.

Adding my 2 cents. I was getting discouraged because of all the talk about 375 fishing. I am currently at 195 Fishing and i had a ghost fish out. Using my Underlight Angler, which gives me another 15, I guess. I have the weaverline on it, but I can't remember where to find the Perception on it. Oh well. I got it at the same spot suggested above. I came here with 3 different toons today, the first two were under 100 on fishing. This toon has the stats listed here.

I got this coelacanth mount after doing almost nothing.... fished fish up during derby.... not all of them in one go.... nothing but being level 293+8 fishing skill and tossing the requisite amount of stargazer fish to gain the requisite buff. Three casts in a random body of water.

**Clarifying and Sharing, since my dumb !#$ clearly misunderstood posts, since people kept mentioning a 'mount'. I came to this page looking to find out how to fish up the Awoken Coelacanth, a reagent for the Sushi Special feast. I have fishing skill of 324 and had yet to 'learn' this fish. Posts kept referring to a mount and I got sidetracked thinking "Oh, I want a mount!" I started throwing Whispering Stargazer back in the water (instead of hoarding them for fish fillets) **totally skipping over that's how to 'learn' the fish -DUH!**
Since my skill was high, I tried throwing just one, getting a 5min buff - no 'awoken' fish or mount....after about 15min, I threw the 10x Whispering Stargazers as posts mentioned and FINALLY 'learned' fish. I was really trying for the mount, not realizing till AFTER watching video, the 'mount' is "Kah" from the Achievement "The Derby Dash" and only achievable during the Saturday Fishing Derby by catching all the listed fish which includes the Awoken Coelacanth! Good luck catching fish for Sushi...and the mount ;).

**Update: I took a bunch of Whispering Stargazer fish to Azj-Kahet to capture this fish for 'sushi' - You throw 10 fish into "any body of water" (does not need to be a school) to get the buff "Whispers of the Deep" ; about my 5th cast I got the fish. I did this during the Fishing Derby, with the Derby Buff, since I was also after the achievement "The Derby Dash for 'Kah' mount. **PLEASE NOTE: AFTER catching ONE (1) Awoken Coelacanth fish, my Whispers of the Deep 5min buff went away. wth? I thought maybe I accidentally removed it, so I threw 10 more fish - got the buff - caught the fish on 3rd cast - buff disappeared. I call B.S. the buff should last 5min to continually attempt to capture! I'm not sure 10 Whispering Stargazers are worth ONE Awoken Coelacanth fish for sushi. :/

If you're trying to fish this up for the Derby but on low fishing skill, go and HAND IN the Derby quest and buy x2 of the notes that increase your skill by 10 each. You keep the buff and can continue fishing for the achievement after handing in the quest.

I suspect you need to get the skill Fishing Journal - Learn - Mereldar Fishing Derby or Khaz fishing level 150 to catch this.

1. You must have the Derby Dasher buff, which you will receive when you take the quest Hallowfall Fishing Derby (This is important, otherwise fishing for fish will not count towards the achievement)
2. Have 10 stacks of Whispering Stargazer (Not required, but will make fishing much easier)
3. The quest doesn't have to be completed all at once (you won't be able to), so complete it every time it appears (every Saturday) to complete the achievement and get the mount.
