If you wonder how much it cost to buy all weapons + armor from the previous level, for me it was 500k or so. A lot of gold, but also a good way for Blizzard to combat inflation.

If you are looking to save gold in future avoiding to buy BoEs and be able to queue for normal dungeons or smth - sad news , it wont work - lvl 50 heirloom ilvl is 58 when minimum required ilvl for normal dungeon queue is ilvl 80

Edit: Never mind; lvl 51 it becomes ilvl 98; Id say worth

As of 9.1.5, I tested this with a heirloom piece, and it was at:

item level 58 at character level 49, upgrade level 4/5
item level 58 at character level 50, upgrade level 5/5
item level 98 at character level 51, upgrade level 5/5
item level 146 at character level 60, upgrade level 5/5

In other words, the heirloom piece scales up approximately 1.18 ilevel per character level, from level 1~49, and approximately 5.33 ilevel per character level, from level 51~60.

As alternatives to the heirloom pieces, 160-ilevel green gear (requires level 60) is usually cheap in the Auction House, so is 129-ilevel green gear (requires level 56). However, 93-ilevel green gear (requires level 50) is usually quite pricey in the AH.

Considering how pricey the 93-ilevel greens are listed in the AH, these Eternal Heirloom Scabbard and Eternal Heirloom Armor Casing are worth it if you would like to enjoy the near-maximum character power from level 51~59.
