I did this follower quest today (Drunk Angry Murlocs), and did NOT get the recipe. Instead, I got 3x Unagi Skewer itself. I don't know if this is a bug, or intended.

(Update: I have gotten Poen to level 25 (the other two guys are at level 22), have had maxxed cooking since he was level 10, have gotten Paragon with the Unshackled 2 or 3 times, and I finally FINALLY got the recipe for my quest reward today. FINALLY.)

This is the first time I've completed this quest and no recipe as a reward (only 2 Manapearls and XP for Bodyguard). May have to complete it a few times, may be simply random.

Due to the battle for bag space initiated by 8.2, might be worth to check your bags from time to time. You might already have it, from that wq, without knowing.

I've now done the Drunk Angry Murlocs quest 12 or 13 times on the same character and no luck so far.

Mine was listed as an actual quest reward and got this today, so it doesn't seem random. Maybe it had been broken?

Had Poen with me, level 21. My other 2 followers are also 20+.
I have max cooking.
I'm exalted with the Unshackled.
I don't think I've ever done this quest before.

Just got the recipe from Poen's today. No idea how but it came from "Drunk Angry Murlocs" quest after doing "Poen's Favorite Dish". My character is barely 50 Zandalari Cooking and only got Poen's to level 7.

Ungai Skewer stacks with other food so I would really like the recipe but I must have done this quest half a dozen times and I still haven't received it :'(

Finally got it after like 20ish attempts. I recently reported it as a bug, maybe they fixed it? but if not, just keep trying.

I asked a GM about this recipe, seeing if they could provide the recipe for me (someone suggested this had been done before). He responded that they could not give me with the recipe, but they are currently investigating what is going on with it.

I just obtained this today, September 28, 2019, on NA servers Horde side. I got it from the follower quest "Drunk Angry Murlocs" which on Horde side is a Poen Gillbrack follower quest. It was not a surprise reward, it was clearly listed as one of the rewards for the quest (along with follower exp and 2 prismatic manapearls). Unsure if this version of the quest is a different quest ID from the one that I've already done 40+ times by now.

Got the recipe today after many times doing this quest. Its a random chance that the quest will offer this as a reward. It is clearly stated in the quest if you can get the recipe as a reward. If its not listed as a reward, then its not going to happen and try again the next time its offered.

Debunked; it's not based on shard.

My hypothesis is the recipe is randomly rewarded based on your shard (or realm).

Today I selected my companion, and saw Drunk Angry Murlocs listed as a daily on my map. The tooltip indicated that Recipe: Unagi Skewer was a reward.

Then I relogged. When I logged back in, the recipe was not listed as a reward on the map, and it wasn't a reward for the quest that day. My best guess is it's tied to your current shard, like Mrrl's daily inventory.

If my hypothesis is right, you could join a party formed by someone on a realm/shard which has the quest with the recipe on a given day. I have not tested this, but this method is how many people (including myself) got the Crimson Tidestallion from Mrrl, since his inventory varies by realm/shard.

More info on sharding:

"Sharding" is Blizzard's tool to prevent players overcrowding small areas. Each area in the world has a cap on the number of players it can hold, and the boundaries of these areas are invisible. If the number of players in an area exceeds the cap, a new "shard" is created, essentially a copy of the "world." Players entering the area are put the new shard. Everything looks the same, except players can only see and interact with other players on the same shard. Most of the time, players don't notice this is happening, and that's by design.

There is no way to move between shards, except to join a party of someone on a different shard within the same map zone as you. Everyone in a party is moved to the leader's shard.

Shards are similar to your garrison, except you can see other players. Everyone's garrison exists in the same "place" but you can only see yours.

Finally managed to get this recipe today on Laughing Skull EU. The quest listed the recipe as reward, but not actual Unagi Skewer food items (screenshot). Bladesman Inowari level 22 (and 1/3 to next), both other followers level 20. After getting Inowari to 20 I've only done Drunk Angry Murlocs, meaning I've done the quest at least 7+ times. I'm exalted with the Bladewave Ankoan.

People have made impressive effort in finding the mechanics of getting this recipe, however after reading various comments - especially this GM statement - I now believe there are no discoverable mechanics the player may use to their advantage. Every day, if the player selects the correct follower and if the Drunk Angry Murlocs daily is available, then the quest simply has a small random chance of featuring the recipe as a reward for that given player. In order to check the Tyrsenus' sharding theory I asked three other players I could see were doing the quest (and thus shared my shard) if they could see the recipe as a reward, and none of them could. This implies sharding is not involved, though I did forget to ask them if they already knew the recipe. Note that I cannot explain Tyrsenus' relogging experience, and I did not attempt relogging myself. Personally I have the impression getting the recipe is simply RNG hell.

The only discovery here appears to be how the Drunk Angry Murlocs rewards are dynamic. Wowhead has datamined that the quest has four rewards: the recipe, the food item, follower XP, and Manapearls. As some people report getting the food item but not the recipe, and I experienced the opposite, it seems both recipe and food items are normally 'toggled off' and hence hidden and unavailable for the player. Either of them may, seemingly randomly, be 'toggled on'. This means, assuming I am correct, that the quest normally yields only follower XP and Manapearls, in rare cases also the recipe or the food item, and in presumably very rare cases also both recipe and food item.

Personally I cannot remember having seen such a quest system anywhere else in the game. Random quest rewards exist, but are provided through items like Bag of Fishing Treasures. Why Drunk Angry Murlocs features a system so poorly designed that many people assume it's bugged is beyond me. My best guess is that Blizzard is using Cooking as a test ground for new game mechanics which also would explain the mess that was Nomi's test kitchen in Legion. The fact that the Cooking panel lists the source of Unagi Skewer as simply "Nazjatar Ally Daily Quests" makes the system even worse as the description is partially wrong and does not assist the player in determining exactly what follower and quest is needed.

For the people trying to get this recipe it appears the only approach is to repeatedly check Drunk Angry Murlocs, on the days it is available, if it rewards the recipe. As all comments - my own included - so far report seeing the recipe as a reward when accepting the quest it is in theory no benefit in doing the quest if the recipe is not listed. Still, I suppose doing the quest anyway adds some comfort in the feeling of "I'm doing what I can" as was the case for me.

Can confirm, just got Unagi Skewer recipe on Horde side from Poen + Drunk angry Murlocs. Took a billion attempts and had everything maxed, but it finally appeared.

I have been farming the recipe on13 toons and so far I have only received it on 4 toons that are melee or have a melee spec. When I log to a caster toon after seeing the recipe are up for reward. It never was when I logged to a caster toon. I dunno if thats intentional or not, thats just my experience so far.
I have submitted a ticket and if it confirms or disconfirms this. I will submit the reply

Update: The Answer from GM was that all toons can get it no matter what class or spec they are.
Im still not convinced though, will update again if one of my caster toons get it

2nd Update: Finaly got it on my mage, Inowari had been lvl 30 for ages and lots of attempts.
My 6 melee toons got it while Inowari hadnt even dinged 15.

A lucky alt of mine got this recipe today. Cooking skill 7 (recipe needs 170 to learn).
Bladesman Inowari was rank 1.

It seems like cooking skill and follower rank does not matter at all.

Im pretty sure this one is just based on luck.
I did it for the first time today and got the cooking pattern. my follower was level 12.
Judging by the comments here it looks like i got really lucky with this one.

Finally got this today. Poor Poen has been lvl 30 for a long time and every time I was about to do the world quests in Nazjatar, I checked on an alt if this quest was up for Poen. If it was, I took him, went there, took the quest, completed it, turned it in, but no luck I cannot count the times I have tried, but today I got it. War Mode on and maxed out in cooking.

AND! When I picked up the quest at King Mrgl-Mrgl, the recipe was clearly visible as a quest reward! And yes, after having completed the quest, I got it. And think of all the times I did the quest to check - you can see it already when you pick it up... Thank god this is finally over ... not that I will ever cook it, I think :)

I immediately checked on my alt and it was the same old quest without the recipe, so it appears completely random which one you get. Weird that Wowhead only lists the quest with the recipe and not the other, much more common quest.

TL;DR: When you pick up the quest, you will immediately see if it will grant you the recipe as it will appear in the quest text under rewards.

Irritating bull*!@#. This is literally the ONLY recipe in the game that I do not have, despite checking Nazjatar quests daily and having maxed out Cooking. FFS, I have recipes that are no longer *in the game*, and I cannot get this damn thing. Random recipe drops are BS. Blizz, don't do this again!

I assumed it was guaranteed reward and opened ticket, the response I got was:

"This is Game Master Valaladur here to help you with your concerns in not getting the Recipe for the Unagi Skewer.

In this situation, the quest "Drunk Angry Murlocks" is only a small chance to drop the "Recipe: Unagi Skewer" and it is *not* guaranteed like you originally thought it was. This would be working as intended and we would not be able to grant you this Recipe as it is not guaranteed."

So keep on farming I guess.

This Recipe: Unagi Skewer recipe is random. You can see, whether you'll get it or not, when accompany with Bladesman Inowari, and see whether this daily quest it available or not with him. At picking up the quest you can see whether this recipe reward is available or not. You can skip it if the quest doesn't offer the recipe and try again next time it shows up.
I got it at the 4th attempt, and Bladesman Inowari was with me.

Unlike most like-items in the game, this doesn't have a level restriction, and although the damage it causes seems trivial in retail (Shadowlands as of this post), every little bit counts. It does put a one hour debuff on you; however, the debuff does not persist through death. This could then give a slight edge in BGs.

I had never seen this recipe before. Today I checked on my monk (max Zandalari cooking) and the recipe was listed as a reward when I picked up the Drunk Angry Murlocs quest. I then logged over to my priest (max Zandalari cooking), since he is the character that I actually want the recipe on. He took the same quest and the recipe was not listed as a reward. I am baffled why anything would be designed this way.

I'd like to write a small correction to the posts which claim that we know if the recipe will be rewarded or not, when we pick up the quest.
This is not quite right. We know this much earlier - when we pick up the follower. Already then we can hover mouse on the quest icon on the map and see if the recipe is included or not.
This means that we can decide if we want to go to that quest location or not, straight in the base, before we pick up the quest.
Of course, when we go to the quest giver and pick up the quest, we can once again make sure that our decision is correct.

Just got this recipe today, I'll give as much info as I can to possibly refute some theories out there.

I'd been checking Poen daily for weeks without results. I heard some people theorize that the recipe may only drop for people who are Exalted with the Unshacked/Waveblade, so I started grinding rep. In the process I got Poen up to Rank 20 and hit Revered, when the recipe became a reward.

I did not need to be Exalted or need Poen at rank 30. It is entirely possible there are no requirements at all and I just got it by luck, but there is also the chance that being Revered or having your follower at Rank 20 could help. (Most likely not, but putting it out there).

I just got this recipe today, Jan 2023, in Dragonflight. I've been checking Drunk Angry Murlocs for a LONG time, and while I didn't check every day, I can say for sure this is a very rare quest reward. I can confirm that it WILL show as a quest reward when accepting the quest. I got it with Poen rank 9 and Exalted with The Unshackled (although rep doesn't seem to matter, according to other comments).
