I don't think the drop rate in Moonglade is accurate. I fished between the bridges nearest the druid trainer, and caught 5 in 10 minutes. This is a lot safer than any of the other places listed.

Currently these fish have two uses:

1 - Craftsman's Writ - Lightning Eel Which increases your Argent Dawn rep by 150 per turn-in.
2 - Make Stormchops added in patch 2.3

Side-note: El's Angling has alot of into on fishing times etc

After 50 or so casts with no lightning eel in WPL I suspect the drop rates have been altered as a result of the 2.3 patch. Droprate in Deadwind pass seemed to be approximately 5% over a few hundred casts.

Drop rates are affected by time-of-day. See: http://www.capsu.org/wow/fish/lightning_eel.html

They are most frequently found between 12:00 and 18:00 (noon to 6pm).

I fished from 5:10pm to 5:40pm in WPL and caught 10 lightning eels. I didn't see any pools of fish, I suppose it's all open water there, but it's still a reasonable drop rate.

Just fished for these in the WPL, inland water, open casts

it went like this :

Fishing skill 400 (375 skill + 25 from rod)

16:50pm ~ 17:21pm (servertime)

100 fish caught on 100 casts,

Raw Redgill = 39
Sunscale Salmon = 30
Lightning Eel = 12
Oily Blackmouth = 11
Mithril head Trout = 8

17:23pm ~ 17:52pm (sevrertime)

100 fish caught on 100 casts

Raw Redgill = 40
Sunscale Salmon = 30
Lightning Eel = 11
Oily Blackmouth = 12
Mithril Head Trout = 7

my finish time was 18:00pm

between 17:52 pm and 18:00pm went on to fish:

Raw Redgill = 12
Sunscale Salmon = 5
Lightning Eel = 1
Oily Blackmouth = 2
mithril Head Trout = 1

and a Bloated Redgill containing 1 star ruby

so as can be seen ..the two 'sets' of 100 fish are almost identical....give or take 1 fish

the 20th Lightning Eel was caught on the 169th cast at 17:44 pm :)

The fishing skill varies depending on the region you are fishing in. If you are kinda low on the fishing end I suggest getting to about 200 skill and buying some Aquadynamic Fish Attractors or Sharpened Fishing Hooks either an Engineer or the AH, then heading out to the Moonglade and fishing in the lake there. You will level your fishing, catch the occassional bloated fish containing useful stuff, and eels. This is also a great place to get your fishing up as these fish are used past 225 to get you moving with the cooking skill. Once you get to about 300 fishing you will be able to move on to better spots. The above info is generally correct and time of day does matter with the exception of the BC raid zones.

After fishing for approximately an hour in Moonglade, starting at 5pm Server time and ending at 6 pm server time. I managed 26 of these Eels.

Edit: I was fishing within the town in Moonglade. Near the moonwell. Not sure if it really matters where you stand. It also seems that the time restriction on the Eels is gone. I still fish in Moonglade if I am in need of Lightning Eels, I've had a lot of success fishing in the zone.

I've been fishing in WPL to get my fishing up and I've caught 10 in about 30 minutes. was about 5:37pm server time.

I was trying to fish last night, pretty much non-stop, and then a little extra this morning in WPL pretty close to the bottom coord (56.3, 76.9) and I received absolutely no eels. This is the total count:

112 Raw Redgill
25 Raw Sunscale Salmon
23 Raw Nightfin Snapper
22 Raw Mithril Head Trout
8 Oily Blackmouth
1 Greater Mana Potion

I had maybe ~5 casts where I missed reeling in, due to playing without sound and watching TV at the same time.

Trying again, further inland, west of Andorhal.

I should note, I am doing all this with no lures, but I started at 403 combined fishing, and at the end of the above I am at 430.

I noticed that I have a few times where I have absolutely nothing on the line for the full duration of the cast... so I am applying a +100 Lure.

Fishing in Maraudon for Raw Redgills (to skill up my cooking) at 1:30pm server time actually (surprisingly) ended up netted me:

Raw Redgill: 45 (39%)
Raw Sunscale Samon: 41 (35%)
Oily Blackmouth: 11 (10%)
Lightning Eel: 11 (10%)
Raw Mithril Head Trout: 6 (5%)
34 Pound Redgill: 1 (1%)

Total: 115

..with a few missed casts.

I skilled up from 225 to 243. Not bad for less than an hour's worth of fishing! :-)

Just fished up 2 of these in about 50 casts in Deadwind Pass by the lake around Karazhan

Was around 12:45 A:M at the time, so I might have just gotten very lucky, or it might be that their drop rate is better from 12-6 am AND pm

The timing restrictions on the lightning eel have been removed. As of what patch, I have no idea, but no one should have downrated Bloke182's post.

Also, his rates are accurate. if you're fishing in Deadwind pass, the catch rate is far better in the northernmost lake by the pass than it is by Karazhan. Fishing by karazhan, I caught 5 over the span of an hour. Moved to the northern lake and caught 32 in the subsequent hour. Given that people with wowhead looter running could be fishing at either place, this likely accounts for the fish averaging out at 10% for the whole zone, although the northern area is 12.5 percent by my calculations over the span of 250 catches.

Edit: Also this is patch 3.0.9, not 3.0.8 as wowhead has my post recorded.

Fishing in Deadwind Pass in the Northern most lake after about 25 minutes and 176 casts got:
Lightning Eel x14
Barbed Gill Trout x60
Bloodfin Catfish x40
Cresent-Tail Skullfish x23

I don't know if the drop rate has lessen, but i imagine that if i stayed for an hour like Notadin then i might have gotten better results but by far the Northern most lake is the best bet to fish up Lightning Eels

Was leveling fishing in the south fury river in ashenvale. Just go out back door of org and hang a right til you not in durotar/barrens anymore. Maybe I got lucky but spent an hour there and caught 2 stacks worth.

1) On the 23rd cast
2) On the 30th cast (just 7 casts later!)
3) On the 35th cast (just 5 casts later!)

I also caught a Lightning Eel in Deadwind pass (42, 28). I caught it on my 30th cast, during which time I caught:

I caught the Driftwood while sitting at 415 skill (380 + 25 from Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole). After this I attached a Sharpened Fish Hook and drank some of Captain Rumsey's Lager and had no more problems.

That makes this fishing hole a great spot for working towards The Outland Gourmet.

Don't waste your time in WPL. Based on earlier comments, looks like Deadwind Pass may be the place to go.

Went to the northernmost end of the lake in deadwind pass. Down the hill, next to a log. Started fishing at 11:20am server time. In ten minutes I had the following:

Success rate is about 12%

As a summary, Deadwind Pass is the way to get those eels (43,28) enjoy fishing there.

Description:

First Try: WPL at 9:00 am Game Time. about 15 mins of fishing:
3xRaw Nightfin Snapper
31xRaw Redgill
4x Raw Sunscale Salmon
3xOily Blackmouth
1xSuperior healing potion
4x Raw Mithril Head Trout
0xLightning Eel

Second Try: Deadwind Pass at 9:22am Game Time. 9mins of fishing:
20xBarbed Gill Trout
8xBloodfin Catfish (Needed for Outland Gourmet)
9xCrescent-Trail Skullfish (Needed for Outland Gourmet)
1xLightning Eel (Needed for Outland Gourmet)

Just go and fish. There are no schools for the above fish.

While Wowhead database shows EPL as having the most fishing spots where this eel has been caught, Deadwind Pass is certainly better. I spent about 3 hours in EPL (at the big lake) trying to catch one and didn't get a single one. I finally shifted to Deadwind Pass and caught 10 in 45 minutes.

Note: I was at 315-325 fishing skill at Deadwind Pass with half of my catches being trash (weeds and the like). So I suspect my actual eel count would have been much higher with a higher fishing skill.

While in Felwood at about 2:00 game time and as a level 220 Fisherman, I tried fishing a couple hundred yards downstream from Bloodvenom Falls and scored 5 Lightning Eel in about 10 minutes. Seemed like about every 7 casts or so I'd collect one.

I needed a Lightning Eel and a Crescent-tail Skullfish to complete the Outland gourmet achievement. I needed a total of 3 casts fishing in the lake by Karazhan to catch both.

I went fishing at Blackwood Lake in the middle of the Eastern Plaguelands to pass the time as my hearthstone recharged. As a DK, I used my Path Of Frost to stand mid-lake. At 5:03 I fished until that power ran out.

I looked it up and the Lightning Eel has about a 1/4 chance of getting caught from noon to sixish. It isn't that for me but I got a few. In ten minutes I caught:

5 Lightning Eels
12 Raw Whitescale Salmon
11 Raw Sunscale Salmon
2 Raw Redgill
1 tangled fishingline
1 tattered cloth
1 weeds

...and this was with my fishing at 375. That gives me a 5/33, which while it isn't 5/20, it is not bad.

I caught Lightning Eel on a sunday at 22:00 pm Sever Time, so if you feel like catching it anytime is fine, don't have to wait to next day noon. Catch happened at Feralas Northern lake, where the Green Dragons are.

In Cataclysm, confirmed that these can be caught from 12pm-6pm server time in the Blasted Lands. I did not know that some fish availability changed depending on server time. Plated Armorfish drop from the same pool in the Blasted lands from 12am-6am.

During the 12am-6am time zone I fished at least 50 casts at night and caught 13 Plated Armorfish and zero Lightning Eels, so I feel comfortable saying the time strongly influences the drop rates at present. Not sure if timing restrictions were reimplemented (previous poster said they were removed) or what.

I was looking to catch a few of these to have some fun AFKing towards Critter Kill Squad by way of Storm Chops for the small guild I'm in.

Confirmed in Un'Goro Crater at 35,25 which is the island that makes the eye of the dragon in the river. I caught 4 in about 10 minutes from 11:30 to 11:40 AM server time.

Didn't have much luck catching Lightning Eels in 20 minutes of fishing in Blasted Lands in the Tainted Forest. Rate was very low for me anyway...

After about 2 minutes of fishing:

So it was a 25% drop rate for me =)

Fishing in Deadwind Pass for approx. 30 minutes yielded the following:

Crescent-Tail Skullfish: 25
Bloodfin Catfish: 21
Lightning Eel: 15

Lightning Eel percentage: ~13%

By contrast, I fished in Blasted Lands for about 15 minutes... didn't catch a single Lightning Eel there.

I went fishing in the Blasted Lands, down near 42.92 - 71.52. Here are my catch results for 100 casts, done in the morning, if that matters:

41 Raw Whitescale Salmon
18 Raw Sunscale Salmon
16 Plated Armorfish

3 Raw Redgills
1 Major Healing Potion

so, 6% drop on the eels. SIGH.

I was fishing in the pond under Karazan and was pulling these up along with the Barbed Gill Trout, Crescent Tailed Skullfish and the Bloodfin Catfish.

Granted they were the least of the catches, but at least still available.

I just caught 2 of these in Feralas while doing the Angler Extreme quest for Nat Pagle. Took me roughly 20 casts to get the fish I needed for the quest and got the 2 lightning eels in that time.

On my 10th cast, I caught a lightning eel. It was 5:30ish server time when the drop rate is supposedly the best and I was in the tainted forest in the Blasted lands.

okay, i srsly just spent like 20 mins fishing for this dumb thing in blasted lands by the tainted forest and this was my result.

39 raw whitescale salmon.
26 raw nightfin snapper.
14 plateed armor fish.
5 raw redgill.

so frustrated, thinking i was doing something wrong, i read more on this thread and decided to try deadwind pass.

first...cast...eel -_-

sooo either i have terrible luck ooorrrrrr i have no idea. fish in deadwind pass! :]

I highly suggest fishing for these out of the small lake at the south end of the Deadwind Pass zone. In the 17 casts I did I got:

10 Barbed Gill Trout
3 Lightning Eels
3 Bloodfin Catfish
1 Crescent-Tail Skullfish

So it's fully confirmed that the time restrictions mentioned above have been removed. You can fish them all up anytime you wish.

Don't forget to keep at least 1 for your Cooking Achievements!

I fished near Karazhan in Deadwind Pass between 7:30-8:30 pm server time on a Monday. I was able to get 16 Lightning Eel along with 103 Barbed Gill Trout, 41 Bloodfin Catfish, and 43 Crescent-Tail Skullfish. Hope this helps someone.

Edit: I went back at 10:30 pm server time and was able to catch 20 in 45 minutes. I have a fishing skill of 580 with lures and equipment.

With a fishing level of 635 with pole & hat bonuses, I fished at Blasted lands for a total of 105 casts.

while fishing in moonglade (anywhere around the main lake) for sunscale salmon, i caught:

10 x oily blackmouth
22 x raw sunscale salmon
7 x lightning eel
3 x ironbound trunk
8 x raw mithril head trout
41 x raw redgill
1 x 37 pound redgill
3 x stranglekelp

so this is a great place to fish for this cooking level, plus some extras for later recipes.

(my skill at the start was 320+, not using any lures).

Just to update, although Karazhan has changed, you can still fish up the eel from the water in the area, just find water that's deep enough and fish away. I spent about 10mins fishing and got 22x Barbed Gill Trout, 7x Bloodfin Catfish and 1x Lightning Eel.
