The only reason why I want to play paladin in legion is this weapon. I know that all of the artifact weapons are cool and more or less well known, but the ashbringer really stands out. It is the most famous weapon since vanilla.
I mean, IT is the sword that destroyed frostmourne!

Soon every paladin will have it, and it will become common. I'm not sure how will I feel when this happens.

This is the Artifact weapon for the Paladin spec, Retribution.

This weapon has a very long and detailed history not only in the lore of Warcraft, but also in the World of Warcraft game.
We have seen it wielded (Highlord Tirion Fordring).
We have seen it used (Highlord Tirion Fordring).
We have seen its origin (Old Hillsbrad Foothills).
We have seen, and even wielded, a corrupted version, Corrupted Ashbringer.
Now, the uncorrupted version can be wielded by players, assuming of course you are a) a Paladin and b) Ret spec.

Me? I don't really care. After a long long time, it can finally be in my hands.

That being said, I'm really sad for poor Darion Mograine. It was his fate to wield this sword, and then he kinda got cheated out of it, first by Tirion hogging it for a decade, and now the player doing the same.

The centrepiece of the blade, once a polished sphere of a purified dark Naaru, now carved into a disc adorned with the symbol of the Silver Hand, suspended in holy energy. It bears the symbol of Lordaeron as the crossguard.

The blade itself was forged by none other than King Magni Bronzebeard, filled with vengeance and hoping to find retribution for his brother Muradin, whom he thought slain at the hands of Arthas. His magnum opus.

Undead slain by the weapon are turned to ash from the sheer amount of holy vindication present within.

It's the opposite of Frostmourne in every way, and as we learn, it's superior too. It shattered Frostmourne, releasing the souls of those slain by the wicked blade, and ended the Lich King's reign.

Basically, it's one ~~Hell~~ Heaven of a weapon.

I've been playing my paladin as Protection (PvE) and Holy (PvP) for years, with little interest in Retribution (I mean, when we had to choose two of the three specs, that was the one I put aside). Now that I'll be able to wield Ashbringer, though, and be able to play all three specs... it's time.

It would have been a great joke by Blizzard if obtaining Ashbringer somehow involved Nat Pagle and the now infamous Nat Pagle's Guide to Extreme Anglin'. Like if Tirion Fordring dropped it in the sea on the way to fight the Burning Legion and it was fished up near Theramore...:)

I just noticed, but the "Blade of the Scarlet Highlord" has been recolored into a blue alliance/silver hand theme instead of its original Scarlet Crusade colors.

It's sadly also suffering from "fatblade's disease" (swords and axes going from sharp, to a solid mace-blunt thickness)

But i guess there is hope for one of the artifact skins to be that of the original.

This will be a heavy blade to wield, given the old friend we lose after all those years. From his old quest line in the Plaguelands, through the Northrend campaign and beyond, Tirion has been through much, and we were there to see it.

Upon getting the blade a Big bad demon name Bal something, wants it, but cant have it, cause for lore intense reason the blade has chosen us.

once we get back to him, we find him dying and surrounded by paladins.

NOT ONE PALADIN choses to save this guy, but let him die, cause "Reasons"

We are then classed as the new highlord and get a fancy new title called Highlord and begins our journey!

That's kind of dumb on how we get it. Oh well, least we still get the blade at long last. Mmm, want that flaming Ashbringer.

I am honestly confused about some of the altervative versions.

Sure I understand the value in allowing players a wide range of customization, more so when they are going to spend however long Legion lasts wielding the same weapon, but given the weapon's background how do you justify having "fel-touched" or corrupted versions of the weapon, after all the trouble people went through to finally purify it.

Still, full credit to whoever was given the task to make this weapong awesome, given its relatively silly appearance. Some of the "holier" looking alternative looks look not only amazing but oddly practical.

It's slightly wider on the end, has significantly more polygons and has higher-quality textures than the original Ashbringer.

Personally, I'm a little disappointed that this is the retribution artifact, partly because I don't like how the artifact weapons are going. I really like the idea of having only one weapon that improves as you do, but taking such an important and storied piece of lore as the Ashbringer and handing it out like candy really breaks the fantasy, both of the weapon and of role-playing a hero. And when I say it breaks the fantasy, I mean it takes a wrecking ball to it. Lore-wise, it's important in an MMO to feel like an important and unique person, but saying, "You're now the head of your order, and you have this one-of-a-kind sword of legends" - saying that and giving that to everyone does exactly the opposite. Now the game is telling you something and giving you something for which you can never fully realize the fantasy - because everyone else has the same thing. I really like the idea of having just one upgradeable weapon, but it should really have been, lore-wise, something that was important, special, and powerful, but not one-of-a-kind. Likewise, rather than saying that the player is the head of the order, they should have given us a position of importance that was not the head of the order, but maybe a member of a council of Highlords. Something like that, where the fantasy can be fully realized by the player, rather than to have it constantly broken anytime another member of your class walks by with the exact same weapon that you have.

I really wish they had done it this way instead, and then maybe have the Ashbringer appearance unlockable for the artifact by means of a feat of strength or a legendary relic drop or something.

I've been enjoying the idea of a 'paladin' since I first saw the units in Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness. That, and the first, were the only 'Warcraft' I knew until I tested WoW for the first time. I rolled a pally, because I liked the idea of a noble, selfless warrior, imbued with the strength and grace of the Divine. And when I started... Blizzard dropped what was essentially a wooden mallet into my hands. And I was thrilled. All through WC2, the heavy mounted paladins swung massive war mauls at their foes. I continued, as oft as the game would allow, to use a mace. I was stunned when I saw Uther's tomb in the Plaguelands, but was restored lightly in seeing that he was clutching a two-handed mace. That was my inspiration from the first.

Paladins wield maces.

Now, for reasons I can't really understand, I am handed this two-handed sword. The only thing that it has on it that even stirs me is the old crest of Lordaeron AS the hilt... but that's not it. Maybe I am alone in this... but I don't want this sword. I don't want this title. I am NOT the "Highlord" of the Silver Hand, nor am I the wielder of this 'Ashbringer'.

Keep the sword, Blizz, or give it to someone else. Put a hammer back in my hands. Let me bear the Light into dark corners, and crush the demonic and corrupt under the unbearable weight of justice. Give me a simple two-handed mace... and let me make my own destiny.

I am curious about the default skin for the Ashbringer. Throughout all of the lore, and in-game appearances, up until now, the Ashbringer has had the red-orange hilt. But the first skin get you on it for your artifact weapon, the hilt is blue. I wonder if this was a conscious decision, or an oversight. Maybe Tyrion changed the hilt at some point?

If you reset your artifact weapon (the talents/traits) you DONT lose any artifact power except for the artifact power you pay for the reset!

Anyone else find it interesting that the first PvP appearance is exactly the same as the form Ashbringer took while Balnazzar was dominating the player? In my opinion that appearance, the circumstances behind it and the new name certainly say something about PvP right now.

Hidden appearence

1) Kill Nefarian for Head of Nefarian Head of Nefarian

2) Make a copy of A Complete Copy of "Nat Pagle's Guide to Extreme Anglin'.":
Head to Dire Maul and loot A Thoroughly Read Copy of "Nat Pagle's Guide to Extreme Anglin'." from A Dusty Tome
Head to Alterac Valley and loot Nat Pagle's Guide to Extreme Anglin' from player corpses.
Somehow convince Sister Elda to combine the parts.
Bring these items to Prince Tortheldrin and turn it in.

3) Head to the Bulwark in Tirisfal Glades and talk to the traveler Traveler Found who talks about Timolain.
The Traveler will send you to find Grand Inquisitor Isillien's Journal Grand Inquisitor Isillien's Journal and Notes Read read it.

4) Get Timolain's Phylactery by killing a Large Vile Slime.

5) Summon Timolain and get Shard of Darkness

Return to your order hall and the final quest, Walking in Shadows, rewards the appearance.
