Got this today 18/01/17.
Used the "Key to Nar'thalas Academy" (archaeology reward) inside the academy in Azsuna and phased into the "time-lost" version.
I talked to Instructor Nidriel and did all 12 of the runes.
I talked to Sythorne and did all 9 book fights.
This allowed me to walk up to the headmistress and "duel" her.
Defeating her gave me the Headmaster title.

This page says the title is account wide, but I do not have it on my other characters.

you just need to defeat the headmistress Elya Azuremoon in a duel after using the key you got from archeology.
they recommend 10players to fight, but with a warlock destruction I was able to solo her just with the big blue tanking pet.
she's not really that hard, just annoying as a caster because of her spell that will bump you in the air if you don't run away to avoid it.
when you have her around 10% HP, she's gonna run in the middle of the room and disappear after giving you the "headmistress/headmaster" title.
I can't see any other reward there.
you can play with the runes and summon mobs from the book, recommended 3 or 10 players are really not accurate. it's really easy to solo.

Just solo'd this as an 869 Ret Pally.

The rune tracing is easy, so no tips there.

The drawing fights are all solo-able, although YMMV depending on your class and whether or not you can heal and/or have an NPC helper who can tank. I used Vindicator Boros and he was mostly helpful on the Headmistress fight and for a couple of the others, although he did not hold threat for me on the Blue Dragonfight 10-man fight. The trick for all these fights is to keep moving, don't stand in the fire, use pillars to LOS, and manage your cooldowns effectively. I imagine as gear levels get high in coming patches this will become more and more trivial to solo.

Complete the Legion archaeology quest chain that begins in Dalaran (Broken Isles) with Academic Exploration (when it comes up) to acquire the Key to Nar'thalas Academy.
Then use the Key to Nar'thalas Academy at the Academy in Azsuna in the room where you've completed the many Academy quests (door to the left, when walking in).
Go talk to Elya Azuremoon and challenge her to a duel (it recommends a group of 10 players, but she can be easily soloed).
Beat her and you receive the title Headmaster/Headmistress.

you dont need to complete the runes or book. you can talk directly to her and duel. easily solo-ed.

Finished all the runes and just could not finish the big outer circle on the senior fire rune. Probably spent close to 10 minutes trying to.

Only to find out you can simply walk up to the headmistress and duel her without completing the books and runes.

Fun fact about this title: you can get it for friends!

If you form a party with folks who lack a key, gather together in the classroom, and pop your key, it phases the entire group over! Everyone can the do the various activities, including the headmistress battle. Anyone who kills her gets title, even folks without the key! Blizz handled this really well - it felt great to help my friends get a shiny new thing =D.

Solo'd as a holy priest. Keep moving out of stuff on the ground, dispel yourself as soon as she finishes casting "Mass Slow". It's like a dance, took about 7 minutes.

Not only can you get this title for friends if you have the key, but they can be ANY LEVEL. I now have the title on a level 2 gnome priest.

1. Have a mage portal the lowbie to Broken Isles Dalaran.
2. Take the lowbie on a 2 person mount (or equivalent) to Narthalas Academy.
3. The lowbie CANNOT ENTER the door to the classroom. But if you have a Swapblaster, you can blast them in! You might have to play around a little before you can enter the room yourself after that. The way we did it, the key was on one toon while the swapblaster was on the other, so we switched in the one with the swapblaster, swapped the lowbie inside the door, then switched back to the toon with the key. So walk in with swapblaster (not in group), position lowbie and swapper, group, then swap, drop group, switch to other toon. This is what worked for us.
4. Go down the stairs into the classroom. Have the lowbie stay well away from the Headmistress, because otherwise they'll be one-shot and exit the phasing.
5. Kill the Headmistress (easy to solo). The lowbie will now have the title.

With two persons both completing all senior runes was enough to challenge Elya to a duel. She wouldn't duel us before we had completed those. The requirement for how many activities needs to be completed seems to scale with group size.

Yeah I know ... 7.3.5 and all...
Returning player. 1 day old 110. Saw the quest was up for the key and did it.

Took me all 3 senior runes plus 2 3player and 1 10 player book to get her to duel me. The duel was long but not overly painful as a Moonkin Druid with Broll bear tanking. With only Regrowth as a heal (and I did need it) it was a little pita. If I talented into Resto it would have probably been a much easier cakewalk.

Just accidentally got this on my warlock. Wanted to use the key and see what it was. I think I did one 3 person fight and 1 of the senior runes, then talked to the headmistress and saw it was a 10-person fight. I soulstoned myself and didn't even need. Fight is very soloable at this point, which is crazy. The title also isn't account wide.

If you lost this title in 8.1 like I did, You can go back to the academy and fight Elya Azuremoon again to get it back.

Logged onto my Priest and the title was appearing in the list! :)

Has anyone gotten this title achievement AFTER LEGION and can CONFIRM it's still accessible to obtain?

I keep hearing different things from different people; that you can get it but then it'll wear off, or you can still get it, or that it's completely retired. I'd like to know someone who's gotten it since BfA came out?

As a female void elf / blood elf 07/2020 if you can't finish the big outer circle on the senior fire rune just use the gamon toy (or another race-switching toy) to complete it.

Got the title today (9.1.5),
she wouldn't duel me right away though I had to beat 10 player version of the books and did runes to senior level

Worked fine as of 9.1.5 :) /way 51. 43 for academy and head left when go into the building. Very easy to solo, no worries.

Just did this January 11, 2023. Used key, did a couple of the runes, killed the 10 man mobs and noticed the headmistress after the fact. Talked to her, dueled, killed and received the title. I had no idea there was a title to get here so I was pleasantly surprised. Reading some comments I tested the log out and back in method to see if I still had the title and yep, it stayed. :)
