Well, it's been just over a month since 9.1 came out and it seems like a good time to check in on the gold making economy to see how people have been faring with the new markets and player activity. A lot has happened in a month, more ups and downs than the Darkmoon Rollercoaster!
kicks off the conversation with a report on their experience...
Just curious what people's experience is and how it stacks up against their expectations.
My own results: High pop server (but merged, so not a lot of high end raiding guilds.) I focus on crafting high-value items (armor, etc.), not flipping or consumables. In short, I've more than doubled my liquid gold and I still have a lot of materials inventory. The outcome has been good but I didn't make it where I expected to.
In 9.0 I started with DM cards and it was not great - too easy get into the market and tons of competition, prices hit a fairly early floor. But I was one of the first with CMII on my server and made bank off of that. I also did really well on a handful of leggos. Back then if you had the stomach to risk spending a lot of gold staying ahead of the 190/210/225/235 buying curve you could easily hit Rank 4 and there wasn't a lot of competition until later. If you got behind on the buying curve it was a steep and expensive hill to climb to catch up so that slowed any competition that wasn't willing to make that initial gamble.
Patch 9.1? I was actually on vacation at the start of 9.1 so I was a few days behind on rep but I got my CMIII and CMotCI only a few days late and I made a ton of margin in the first week of that. Prices have tanked since then. Its still profitable for some professions but overall kind of meh.
Leggos? They've been a bit of a disappointment after they were so successful in 9.0. I've done okay on them but absolute margins are not much higher than they were late in 9.0 - which means percentagewise, they are pretty bad. 10K margin on a 25K crafted item isn't bad. 10K margin on a 140K crafted items is...kind of pitiful. If they were flying off the shelves it would be fine but they aren't.
I'm really curious what went wrong with leggos. Obviously there is more competition; I'm seeing names I didn't see at all throughout 9.0. But its more than that. I've monitored the markets fairly closely and the R5/6 stuff is selling but its just not flying off the shelves the way it did back in December and January. "People can't make their R5 yet, it will go crazy next week." And then, "People aren't spending on R5 when they can get their R6 next week, it will be huge then." Followed by, "People didn't know all the stuff they had to do to max their cinders, it will pick up next week when they catch up on cinders." Yeah, no. For some reason its just spread out a lot more slowly and folks just aren't jumping on the upgrade train the way they did before.
In short, I'm surprised: 9.1 results have been good, a lot of it buoyed by huge margins on early ilvl 230 and 200 gear. But definitely not what I expected given lackluster leggo sales and margins both.
TLDR; leggos, meh. Made lots of gold elsewhere. How 'bout you?
I can offer my own perspective on sales from Shadowsong EU.. While I had a few tailoring legendaries available only 1 each of Capes at Rank 5 & 6, sales have been occasional, but profitable. Rank 4's have been the best sellers for me. The large bulk of my profits have been in Crafter's Mark III and Novice Crafter's Mark gear as well as a depth to professions, particularly Tailoring & Enchanting.

My experience has surpassed my expectations, but I had very low expectations for 9.1. The expansion release is always a wild and crazy ride, and I don't think any X.1 patch can or has ever lived up to its corresponding X.0 release. The goblin version of "omgads wow is dying!" going back 16+ years is complaining that the economy is stagnant when we normalize the new expansion boom.
I too am on a high pop server with a limited number of mythic raiding guilds. There isn't a lot of things that look very profitable if you just fire up TSM and look through what you can buy mats for, click craft all, and actually sell at current prices - which seems to constantly make people give up trying to make money here.
I profited a lot off of the 9.0 legendary rush but I soon got burnt out trying to no-life relist out of necessity to compete with more active goblins. Because the barrier to entry was so low, i spread out into a lot of markets for 9.0, only to discover they were super statured because everyone was doing that as well. For 9.1 I looked at TSM's ledger and sales info for where my over all 9.0 profits came from, and decided I'd focus my time there.
For me on my server, that meant blues with crafters marks, and green blacksmithing weapons. I should've done more darkmoon faire stuff, but I mistakenly thought that market would be dead without a way to upgrade the trinkets, and was proven very wrong by a friend. I still did some legendary stuff, but only on items I previously had rank 4 accessible on. Leatherworking, despite its profitable prices, just doesn't get enough sales so I happily ignored it entirely.
My daily average profits per day is around 190k, and I will very shortly be passing the 20m liquid gold milestone. Had I not bought a bunch of BoE bmah mounts and started funding guild activities and raffles, I'd be well past it already.

When 9.1 got released. Some pets but mostly crafters mark/crafters mark of the chain isle gear. I had no interest in legendries this time around it seemed like it was going to be much more competitive as so many people were looking at going that route.
I went super hardcore on the rep (for example I paid someone 100k to drop me a collapsing riftstone on day one so I had all my rift access from then on) with 2 characters following my main covering 3 of the highest population servers. I levelled each profession probably around 3 times on each character as I mass produced stuff but because I had no competition for ages it was just selling at a stupid rate and I had to cycle around and level it again.

Didnt do much goldmaking so far, didnt bother to get the 230 crafters mark early because korthia bored me already to death like a week in(already stopped doing all the other chores even tough theyre not as bad)
legendary market never was really worth it for me, i made about 2m on the side but the constant undercutting (straight 12hours in a sitting) was too stupid for me. i became a goblin in the first place to fund my groups and my m+ escapades but you cant cancelscan 12 hour and then keep running keys for 6 more. so i quickly left that.
For the rank 6 legendaries: Most of the players i play with simply didnt get it yet because it doesnt seem worth it. nobody wants to spend a 120-160k for a little stat increase + torghast ptsd.
Especially if you play a lot hybrids and enjoy every spec, for some classes you want to craft 4-6 legendaries - the timesink just for that minmax is waaaay to high for the return.
consumeables are where its at for me right now. i can craft small amounts in my gameplay downtime, just dump them for market price and they fly off the shelf usually before i log out already.

I hope all these reports show that there are certainly still ways to make gold in 9.1 and this by far is not exhaustive, farming mats and selling pets over several realms is still a great way to make gold as is the Mission Table.
