Race to world first competitor
SK Pieces
(EU-Stormscale) is breaking up after twelve years of raiding. The
current world fourth guild
and a consistent top 10 finisher throughout Legion, Battle for Azeroth, and Shadowlands, including
world first Crucible of Storms
and finishing third place in Sanctum of Domination, Castle Nathria, and Ny'alotha, it seemed as though the European guild had only just begun to reach toward new heights in the raiding scene, particularly as they had just recently
partnered with SK Gaming
. Their long and illustrious career appears to have come to an end however, as shortly following an announcement that the guild would no longer be participating in the Race to World First, guild founder Luml stated that Pieces would be disbanding entirely.
SK Pieces Disbanding
It saddens me to say after 10 + years of working for this guild to become the best it could be that I've decided that it's coming to an end.
The market has become very competitive when it comes to the amount of hours everyone from top to bottom has to put in, it's just no longer sustainable without sacrificing everything Irl.
I wanna thank everyone from the people that we're here in Cataclysm to the world first on Uu’nat to our short journey with SK gaming. You all touched my life and gave it meaning and I’ll be forever grateful for that.
Wherever all of you end up I’ll be cheering for you and who knows maybe we will meet under different circumstances in the future.
I’ll be taking a break and a few steps back to evaluate what I wanna do personally with my life. Maybe I’d be part of RWF in some other way on a smaller scale. The scene is growing and it’s an interesting landscape where some people finally get rewarded for their time and talent.
To Echo and Liquid I hope you kill it and bring the wow scene to new and greater heights.
Having cited increasing competitiveness, it's almost no surprise following the nearly month-long grueling race in Sepulcher, which even saw previous #1 guild
Team Liquid pause their progression
, though it is another reminder of the inordinate pressure and time commitment that goes into world first raiding. About once a year, these players come together to compete in the newest World of Warcraft raid, but it's difficult to tell exactly how long it will take - some raids with a dozen bosses end up blown out in a matter of days, while a handful of tiers have required weeks of progression, creating havoc with schedules and personal commitments. With the increased visibility of the race to world first, as participating guilds often put on elaborate live streamed events, the stress and pressure to win have only increased - it's one thing to play for 14 hours a day for weeks on end, but another to do it in front of a camera, from an unfamiliar venue, or living out of a hotel the entire time.
In some ways, this has been exacerbated by raid design, particularly this most recent tier in Sepulcher of the First Ones - if raids were tuned better, creation catalyst-like systems came out sooner, or the extravagant time commitments were reduced, those players may not have become as stressed and burned out, but it's hardly the fault of the game alone. These events have become an arms race between participating guilds that continually put in more hours, spend more gold, and go into extravagant debt in order to gain whatever advantage they can - seemingly every tier, there are new techniques for funneling gear, bringing in more alts, or otherwise increasing player power to gain that advantage. Many felt that Corrupted BoE gear in Ny'alotha reached new lows, as guilds used character transfers to buy and sell BoEs from dozens of different servers, but despite the absence of those systems in Shadowlands, spending has continually increased. In the recently analyzed
Cost of World First
, we learned that Race to World First spending in Sepulcher of the First Ones reached new heights, with several top ten finishers spending upwards 700 million gold, the equivalent of between $60 - $90,000 USD in
Gettone WoW
prices, once again pushing the limits of competitiveness.
Certainly none of this is the fault of any particular group though, and that competitive drive to do what it takes to win is also one of the most alluring aspects of a race, though its demands may become untenable. Although we're sad to see them go, we thank Pieces for their participation and excellence throughout the races they've been a part of, and wish their players well with whatever the future may hold for them.
