Tracking Covenant Popularity by Spec in Shadowlands - Launch to Castle Nathria to Patch 9.0.5

It's been over 4 months since Shadowlands has launched, and today we're taking a look at Covenant popularity by spec in Shadowlands. We're comparing Covenant popularity from just before Castle Nathria, to after Castle Nathria, to Patch 9.0.5 in order to see how the WoW community has chosen their Covenants for each spec.
Best Covenant for All Specs
Tracking Spec Covenant Popularity in Patch 9.0.5
Wowhead has started tracking Covenant statistics from the WoW Armory! In this article, we compare the Covenant popularity of each spec in Shadowlands, from launch to after Castle Nathria to Patch 9.0.5, to see any interesting trends across the
World of Warcraft
community.
Comparing Pre-Castle Nathria statistics to Post-Castle Nathria statistics can show you how players have adapted (or the lack of adaptation) to the perceived "Best Covenants" for their spec. We chose the date February 15th for the Post-Castle Nathria statistics, as this is after the Hall of Fame had closed and Season 1 was well under way. This has allowed plenty of time for players to swap Covenants after launch.
Similarly, we wanted to see how the Patch 9.0.5 Covenant tuning has shaken up the Covenant popularity in WoW. As such, we have data obtained on March 15th which should start to show trends for any Covenant swaps that players are making and we can monitor the data farther.
Covenant Data Collection
The data seen in the charts below has been obtained from the following sources:
Pre-Castle Nathria - This data was obtained from
WoWRanks.IO
and presented in a
previous article
Post-Castle Nathria and Patch 9.0.5 - This data was obtained from the WoW API and includes max-level characters in guilds that have at least one member on the Mythic+ leaderboards.
Due to the way that the data has been collected, this will likely not include all max-level characters but should include a large majority of the population. In addition, due to the API, the data may be slightly skewed if players are logging out as an offspec. However, the data should still show large trends in the Covenant popularity of each spec.
Data Highlights
Here are some highlights from the data:
The largest skewed specs are Balance Druid and Restoration Druid towards Night Fae at over 90%.
Druid is the overall most skewed class towards Night Fae.
Some, but not all specs trended towards the most popular Covenant for most specs after Castle Nathria.
Some of the Patch 9.0.5 tuning changes helped the popularity for specs, but not all.
Death Knight Covenant Popularity
For the Post-Castle Nathria popularity, we see that all 3 specs of Death Knight saw a hard trend towards the Necrolord Covenant, with that trend slowing down by continuing in Patch 9.0.5. Also for Patch 9.0.5, despite buffs to
Incatenamento Immeritevoli
and
Dovere della Morte
, no Death Knight spec has seen an overall popularity increase for the Kyrian or Night Fae Covenants.

For the Post-Castle Nathria popularity, we see a large increase of Night Fae Demon Hunters for Havoc and a smaller amount for Vengeance. Despite a nerf to

in Patch 9.0.5, Kyrian has maintained steady for Vengeance, but seen an increase for Havoc Demon Hunters.

For the Post-Castle Nathria popularity, we see all 4 Druid specs trending sharply towards Night Fae, the most popular Covenant. This seems to be the class with the biggest swing towards one Covenant. In Patch 9.0.5, we see a small amount of Restoration Druids going Necrolord for the buffed

For the Post-Castle Nathria statistics, we see all the Hunter specs trending towards Night Fae as the most popular Covenant. In Patch 9.0.5, we saw Necrolord and Venthyr get buffs, but only Venthyr has seen a small increase in popularity.

For the Post-Castle Nathria stats, we see all 3 mage specs trending the most towards Night Fae. In Patch 9.0.5, we see Arcane Mage has some popularity increase towards the 3 other buffed Covenants in Necrolord, Venthyr, and Kyrian while the other two specs continue to trend towards Night Fae.

Priest Covenant Popularity
For both Post-Castle Nathria and Patch 9.0.5, we see Shadow Priests trending towards Night Fae after a new build and playstyle was found for the spec. Otherwise, Discipline and Holy Priests have continued to trend towards Venthyr. In Patch 9.0.5, Blizzard buffed the damage reduction of
Guardiani Silfi
and we see that in Patch 9.0.5 all 3 specs have seen some increase in their Night Fae popularity.

Rogue Covenant Popularity
Rogue Covenants have been a little across the board for the Post-Castle Nathria and it's the one class that doesn't really have one or two "best Covenants" for each spec. With a completely rework of Venthyr in Patch 9.0.5, we see an increase for all 3 Rogue specs after the patch. The
Aculeo Osseo Seghettato
changes did not seem as successfully as getting players to swap to Necrolord with minor increases to Assassination and Outlaw, and a small decrease to Subtlety.

In the Post-Castle Nathria popularity, we see all 3 Covenant specs trend hard towards their "best Covenant". In Patch 9.0.5, the Kyrian and Night Fae buffs for Shaman didn't help the population at all, and population for these Covenants continue to decline. Venthyr was buffed for Elemental and Restoration, and we see an increase in population for Restoration. Elemental has continued to trend towards its "best Covenant" Necrolord. For Enhancement, we see increases to Necrolord and Venthyr in Patch 9.0.5, despite only Necrolord getting buffed.

Warrior Covenant Popularity
In the Post-Castle Nathria stats for Warrior, we see a trend away from Necrolord for all specs. However, with the rework to Necrolord in Patch 9.0.5, we see a large increase in popularity for Protection Warrior and a small increase for Arms Warrior. Arms continues to trend towards Venthyr and Fury with an interesting increase in Night Fae
