June 10th 2016, Warcraft was released in theaters. For many, a World of Warcraft movie was a dream. The story, the characters, the fact that the game was already a visual medium; all contributed to the idea that Warcraft was just a film waiting to happen. As in-game cinematics became better and better, the writing and cinematics teams out doing themselves consistently, a full length theatrical release seemed inevitable. And so it was. But not in the way that many had hoped.
While many had hoped or even expected that the Blizzard in-house cinematics team would take on the job, that was neither practical nor feasible. Instead, director Duncan Jones was hired to make a live-action film through Legendary pictures. The film, intended to ultimately be a trilogy, told the story of the opening of the Dark Portal. Sadly that story happens before the beginning point of World of Warcraft and many fans were baffled by the unfamiliar characters, or perhaps more by the lack of very familiar characters.
Duncan Jones was visionary in his plan for the films and had he been able to complete his trilogy fans would likely have been very satisfied. Unfortunately, a film of Warcraft's scale, with absolutely brilliant SFX that allowed orcs to look like Warcraft orcs and yet be real, costs a great deal of money and that money has to be made back at the box office. Jones was masterful in making a film that rode the line between nods to the fans and accessibility to the general non-Warcraft public. Sadly, that line proved to be a bit too narrow, and along with time constraints imposed by the production company, the film was less than Jones had hoped. The final result was loved by many who "got it," but generally panned. While it broke box office records in China, the US take was disappointing and the hoped for next installment never came to fruition.
Recently, some
deleted scenes were released
, and a rumor persists that
Warcraft 2 is in pre-production
, although there is no word as to whether it would be Jones' sequel or a reboot. Fans have suggested that WoW fan,
Henry Cavil would be a brilliant Arthas
should his story be told while others hold out hope for
Chris Hemsworth in the role
. Whatever way the dice fall, hope remains that Warcraft 2 will eventually make it to the big screen.
