Saurfang was one of the characters announced to have their storylines continued in Patch 8.1, and the questline is now available on the PTR! This follows from the last time we met Saurfang, while he was imprisoned in the Stormwind Stockades.
WARNING: 8.1 Story Spoilers ahead! Don't continue on if you don't wanna be spoiled!
Horde Questline
The questline starts with Dark Ranger Alina, at the Wind's Redemption by the Zuldazar port. On
La Dama Oscura chiama
, she tells you to make haste to Orgrimmar, as the Warchief wants to talk to you in secret.
Once you arrive at the throne room, you will immediately notice that Sylvanas removed all non-Forsaken guards, with an abomination guarding the entrance, and the Dark Rangers acting as guards. According to Sylvanas, this is to ensure that the meeting is private. On
Il Gran Supremo
, she discusses Saurfang.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Thank you for coming so quickly, <player>. This is a matter I could entrust only to you.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: My spies report that Varok Saurfang has escaped Alliance custody. He'd be held in the Stormwind Stockades since the assault on Lordaeron.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Should the boy-king's forces locate Saurfang, no doubt they will kill him on sight.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: While some within our ranks have questioned the High Overlord's loyalties, we cannot allow him to fall back into enemy hands.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: I expect you to find him before they do.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Dark Ranger Lyana is an exceptional tracker. She will assist you with this assignment.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Of course, my lady.
We then depart to Elwynn Forest with Dark Ranger Lyana on
Una via di fuga
. After meeting with her, we attempt to find tracks on Saurfang on the quest
On Track
. At the nearby Mirror Lake, we see a sewer entrance with a lock that was recently used. While further searching, a bunch of SI:7 agents find the player and Lyana, but those are easily killed.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Let's keep moving. Be on the lookout for anything suspicious.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: A sewer exit. Outside the city, away from prying eyes. Let's take a look at that lock.
When opening the lock:
This lock is old and heavily rusted.
Scrape marks and flecks of loose rust are present around the keyhole and moving parts.
It has been recently used.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Seems we have found his escape route. Hmm, there is mud around the lake. We should check for tracks.
After inspecting the mud near Mirror Lake:
Dark Ranger Lyana says: The mud has been disturbed. Someone tried to disguise their route amongst the reeds. Let's keep moving.
After inspecting the second mound of mud:
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Heavy footprints. Too large for a human. It has to be Saurfang. His trail leads east...
SI:7 Agent says: Well, well... what do we have here?
SI:7 Agent says: Seems a couple of Hordies got lost. VERY lost.
SI:7 Agent says: Does that area look brown and filthy to you, Hordies?
SI:7 Agent says: Sure seems green to me. Not like Horde lands at all.
SI:7 Agent says: Let's send them back on their way then, shall we?
SI:7 Agent says: My daggers can point 'em in the right direction!
After defeating the SI:7 ambush:
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Fools.
After the SI:7 ambush, Lyana has a plan, and asks to meet her by the border with Redridge Mountains on
Fuga verso est
. And in
Direzioni impreviste
, we learn of this plan: We use a
Pozione Umanizzante
to disguise ourselves as Humans and look around Redridge to find where Saurfang went.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Hah! Look at you... how sickeningly sweet. It's perfect.
After approaching the guards by Three Corners:
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Won't you please help us?
Dark Ranger Lyana says: My poor sweet daughter lost her puppy!
Dark Ranger Lyana says: It ran away last night. Did you see it?
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Last night? Don't much remember about last night, do we? Hah!
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Come on! No neet to tell 'em about that!
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: It's fine! Why, Mr. Shaw himself paid us a visit! It's not every day the leader of SI:7 gives you the night off.
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Truth be told, it wasn't so much the night off as it was a full bottle of very fine rum... and a lack of orders that we shouldn't drink it all in one sittin'.
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Next thing you know, this one's so deep in his cups he can't hardly stand!
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: They don't need to hear any more about that...
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Decides that he's gonna inform Miss Darcy Parker that he's gone and caught feelings for her.
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: My heart couldn't take it n'more! A man ain't got no defenses when he's doing in his bottles.
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: He takes one look at the franks 'n beans she's got boilin' in the pot, and before ya know it, his lunch makes a repeat appearance.
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Had the poached fish and taters. Not a mean I'll soon forget.
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Instead of the wooin' of a lifetime, poor Darcy had to put a sick man to bed and scrub the floor.
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Let me tell you, nobody knows how to tuck in a man the way she does.
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Don't be givin' up on her, now! You got a big heart, and that counts for somethin'.
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: So to answer your question as quick as I can, I don't think we saw any dogs last night. Least not that I can recall.
After such a riveting story, we go talk to Darcy Parker and Innkeeper Brianna. Brianna mentions lots of guards staying over in Lakeshire for the night and we find a note upstairs, mentioning how the guard between Lakeshire and Burning Steppes was doubled for the night before.
Talking to Darcy Parker. Taking any of the options completes this part of the quest.
> The guard told me you took care of him last night, that was nice!
Oh, yes, poor thing.
I couldn't make out a word of what he was saying on account of all the time slurring and stumbling he was doing. Something about beans?
I put him in bed over there at the inn in Lakeshire.
Hope he's not feeling too horribly today.
> What happened last night?
Oh, sweet thing, nothing to worry about. Were you scared?
One of the guards just had a little too much fun and he needed to lie down and take a nap.
I put him right to the bed in the inn, don't you worry.
> Glory to the Banshee Queen!
<Darcy gives Lyanna a worrying glance.>
Good little girls don't say things like that, dear.
<Darcy turns to face Lyana.>
I'm sure it's just a phase.
Talking to Innkeeper Brianna. Taking any of the options completes this part of the quest.
> Are any guards staying at this inn?
Yes, actually, quite a few. Head upstairs if you want to see for yourself.
Sorry, but I need to get back to the other customers.
> Isn't that a bit rude?
You little brat! Hasn't your mother taught you better than to question adults?
> We want a room, please.
Sorry, they're all taken up by local guards right now.
Not sure where they got the gold, they filled up the rooms last night, even the captain was here.
At least one of them left me a mess to clean up in the morning, too.
Written on the Official-Looking Note
<A hastily-scribbled note, it appears to have been intended for the captain of the guards.>
Our spies report the possibility of an attack.
Double the patrols between here and Burning Steppes tonight, pull your guards from other duties if you must.
- Shaw
Looks like the SI:7 is involved somehow? We go back to investigate Three Corners on
Tracce di Faucisaure
. This distraction on the guards would have been a perfect opportunity for him to sneak past Redridge undetected.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: These back roads would make an ideal route for someone trying to avoid attention. Let's look around.
After investigating some ripped webbing:
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Ripped webbing. Someone definitely passed through here--and it wasn't a gnoll.
After investigating some dead tarantulas:
Dark Ranger Lyana says: They're dead. Based on the print pattern, I'd say it was only a minor scuffle.
After investigating the ichor:
Dark Ranger Lyana says: That's a lot of ichor. More than I'd expect from one of these young tarantulas.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Which means that our quarry must also have encountered...
Dark Ranger Lyana says: ... their mother.
After killing the Injured Bristlequeen:
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Such a shame. I quite like spiders.
After encountering such a giant injured spider, Lyana is convinced we're on the right track, and Saurfang went even farther east. We scout the air on
Sempre verso est
and reconvene at Redridge Pass. After meeting up, we again disguise ourselves as humans in
Una soffiata inattesa
and ask around some more. However, the dogs by Hunter McAlister catch our non-human scents!
Dark Ranger Lyana says: My good sir, can you help us?
Dark Ranger Lyana says: A filthy orc raided our farm in the night. He stole a priceless family heirloom!
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Have youseen any signs of such a monstrous brute travelling over the pass?
Hunter McAlister says: Found some huge tracks just this morning'. They led over the mountain pass and into the swamp.
Franklin says: Grrr...
Hunter McAlister says: If that was your orc, he's a big one. Best watch yourselves.
Danger says: Rrrr... rouf!
Hunter McAlister says: Must've been your orc that got my dogs all riled up last night.
Drooble says: Ar-ooof!
Hunter McAlister says: They were barkin' and growlin' up a storm. They do that whenever one of those Horde scoundrels comes around.
Wallaby says: Rrrrr...
Franklin says: GRRRR...
Hunter McAlister says: Come to think of it, sorta like they're doing right now...
Danger says: ROUF!
Bernard says: Bark!
Hunter McAlister yells: Hey! You're Horde, ain't ya!? Get 'em, boys!
After killing McAlister, the dogs run away. Lyana goes to report back to Sylvanas, but Zekhan shows up! According to him, Saurfang's life is actually in great danger. In
Risvolti cupi
, we head to Swamp of Sorrows in search of Saurfang.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: I must report back to the warchief. You are to take no further action until you hear from me again. Undersood?
Zekhan says: Ey mon, over here! I be needin' your help!
Zekhan says: Saurfang's hidin' out at a small farm nearby. We best be gettin' dere before dey do!
After we reach Saurfang's farm in Swamp of Sorrows, we see it cornered by Dark Rangers - They beat us there! Looks like Sylvanas' plan was not to uncover Saurfang, but to kill him. On
Una morte da guerriero
, we defend Saurfang against the rangers.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Varok Saurfang! You are guilty of treason against the Dark Lady. Exit the hut or I will burn it down... like that tree your Alliance friends loved so dearly.
Zekhan says: Ya ain't got a shred of honor between ya! How ya gonna turn ya backs on Saurfang, after all he's done for da Horde?
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Champion, you and that troll need to stay out of this. My orders come from the Warchief herself!
Varok Saurfang says: And what orders might those be?
Dark Ranger Lyana says: You turned your back on your duty to the Horde, Saurfang.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: And worse, after you abandoned your people, you conspired with humans against your warchief.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: You will throw down your weapon at once and come with us.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Or you will die here, in the swamp, alone.
Zekhan says: Not alone!
Varok Saurfang says: I see you still have not learned to fear impossible odds, my young friend. It is an honor to stand at your side.
Varok Saurfang says: Enough of your prattling, dark ranger! If you came seeking a fight, you shall have it!
Varok Saurfang says: For the honor of the Horde! Lok-tar ogar!
Dark Ranger Lyana yells: Kill the traitor--and all who stand with him!
After the battle:
Zekhan says: Ey! We did it, mon! What a battle! You see all dem sparks I be shootin?
After we defeat the Dark Rangers, Saurfang concocts a plan: You need to convince Sylvanas that you faced Saurfang and lost, and on
Il favore della regina
, Saurfang strikes a
Colpo Convincente
on you. Sylvanas does not seem to believe this, but lets it slide anyway.
Varok Saurfang says: If you are to remain in the Banshee's favor, she needs to believe that I defeated you. But it has to look like you put up a good fight.
Varok Saurfang says: Ready? Take a deep breath. I fear I lack practice in pulling my punches.
Varok Saurfang says: Ah, good. You are still alive. Bruised... but alive.
Varok Saurfang says: Return to the Banshee Queen. Tell her that I will be no one's pawn.
Varok Saurfang says: Zekhan, I need you to remain in Orgrimmar. Let those who wish to restore the honor of the Horde know that they must not give up hope.
Zekhan says: No way, mon. I'm comin' with ya! Where da high overlord go, I go.
Varok Saurfang says: Not today, my friend. This path I must travel alone.
Varok Saurfang says: Go with honor. You will see me again.
Zekhan says: We betta'. We be countin' on ya.
Zekhan says: Okay, hero. We best get back ta Orgrimmar... before more enemies show up!
After turning in Queen's Favor:
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Let me see if I have this right... Saurfang single-handedly slew my elite forces and a veteran dark ranger?
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: How fortunate that you escaped with little more than a bruise. Fortunate... but disappointing.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Let me be perfectly clear. You will find the traitor Saurfang. You will deliver him to me. And you will not fail me again.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Now go. Remember your duty to the Horde. We have a war to win.
Worn Cloak Toy
At the completion of
A Warrior's Death
, you receive the toy
Mantella Consumata
as a reward. This toy gives you a hood and a cloak, similar to the ones Saurfang is wearing on his new, non-armored model, for 30 minutes. Toy toy's description also mentions that this toy is to confuse assassins, with the flavor text
"Some revolutions begin with the smallest acts of defiance."
Alliance and the SI:7 Intentions
The Horde questline starts with the assumption that Saurfang escaped from Stormwind Prison. However, further details hint that the Alliance, specifically SI:7, encouraged the escape in some form.
Saurfang escaped through a passageway with a rusty lock. While Saurfang is a seasoned warrior, we don't imagine lockpicking or pickpocketing skills are part of his repertoire. How did he get the key?
At the lock we uncover during
On Track:
This lock is old and heavily rusted.
Scrape marks and flecks of loose rust are present around the keyhole and moving parts.
It has been recently used.
The player is then ambushed by a number of SI:7 agents... suspicious that they are waiting outside, almost like they are waiting for us. In
Eastern Escape
. Lyana agrees that "something about this doesn't feel right."
Saurfang's escape through Redridge Mountains also shows signs of SI:7 assistance, as it would be difficult to sneak past the Three Corners crossroads. Redridge is known for not having many roads, with only one road that connects Elwynn Forest to Lakeshire.
When questioned as to the events of the previous night, during
Corner Crossing
, the guards cannot remember anything because SI:7 threw a large party for them, with Mathias Shaw himself in attendance:
Last night? Don't much remember about last night, do we? Hah!
Truth be told, it wasn't so much the night off as it was a full bottle of very fine rum...and a lack of orders that we shouldn't drink it all in one sit-in'.
It's fine! Why, Mr. Shaw himself paid us a visit! It's not every day the leader of SI:7 gives you the night off.
The Horde players ask the Innkeeper for lodging, but cannot be assisted as the guards have all the rooms. This is also out-of-place, as the rooms are expensive and the guards could not have scrounged enough gold to pretty much rent the inn out for one night.
Not sure where they got the gold, they filled up the rooms last night, even the captain was here.
We then discover a note presumably written by Shaw, planning for an attack around Redridge and Burning Steppes. This could also signal that the SI:7 wanted southern Redridge with as little guards as possible. Saurfang did head to Swamp of Sorrows, but getting back to Kalimdor could also have been done by heading to Stranglethorn and grabbing a Zeppelin from Grom'gol Camp.
Our spies report the possibilities of an attack.
Double the patrols between here and Burning Steppes tonight, pull your guards from other duties if you must.
We don't know how involved the Alliance was. Perhaps Saurfang is working directly with SI:7, leaving the prison to better-orchestrate a revolution with Zekhan. Or perhaps SI:7 never communicated with Saurfang, but instead set up ideal conditions for him to escape, like distracting the guards, so he could cause dissent among the Horde and weaken Sylvanas' mission.
Sylvanas’ Intentions
At the start of the questline, we believe we are on a mission to capture Saurfang:
Should the boy-king’s forces locate Saurfang, no doubt they will kill him on sight.
While some within our ranks have questioned the High Overlord’s loyalties, we cannot allow him to fall back into enemy hands.
However, when we find Zekhan later on in the questline, he warns us we were lied to:
Description of the quest
Grim Tidings
Ey mon, dat dark ranger she lied to ya!
Saurfang knew they’d be comin’ for him. He sent me to watch the pass, see who his assassins were, try to warn him if I could.
She’s not reportin’ back nothin’, she’s goin’ to kill him. Probably got a whole group of deathguards just waiting for her to give the signal.
Description of the quest
A Warrior's Death
She gonna try an’ take him in, and then no one ever gonna see Varok Saurfang again.
Dis was never a rescue mission, dis was about power, an’ control, an’ Sylvanas think she be holdin’ all the cards.
A line is clearly drawn between characters that follow Sylvanas and those that follow Saurfang and his concept of the Horde. When we examine Sylvanas’ actions in light of her Darkshore and Zuldazar campaigns, a common theme emerges of death. She specifically wants to raise
Delaryn Summermoon as a Dark Ranger
, then
raises Derek Proudmoore as revenge
for the Alliance’s victory in Zuldazar, and now tries to trick the player into helping Dark Ranger Lyana find Saurfang to murder him. Threatening to murder and raise characters isn't something new to Patch 8.1--she threatens Saurfang at the Battle for Lordaeron and initially planned to murder her sisters in the comic "Three Sisters."
In the pre-patch novellas, Saurfang wondered if Sylvanas was hiding something from him when describing the war with the Alliance:
Nathanos finally spoke up. “And it will give you a chance to hunt Malfurion alone, Warchief.”
The look in Sylvanas’ eyes gave Saurfang pause. She was more annoyed than he would have expected. If the Horde managed to kill both Tyrande and Malfurion, yes, it would be a great victory that would weaken the Alliance, but the objective was supposed to be conquering the World Tree. That wedge would split the Alliance no matter who ruled the night elves.
Saurfang considered, not for the first time, that Sylvanas wasn’t telling him everything.
Sylvanas' thoughts also turned to this secret plan:
Elune had intervened. Perhaps she had even stayed Saurfang’s killing blow. And she wouldn’t be the only force beyond the Alliance to oppose Sylvanas’ true objective.
Sylvanas’s anger grew cold.
She had known this would happen. It had simply come sooner than expected. That was all.
During the Talanji and Zul's rescue in
Estrazione da Roccavento
, we meet Saurfang, who refuses to return with us. Saurfang was seemingly ahead of us, thinking about the Warchief's priorities:
You think you are here to take me back to Orgrimmar. Back to the Warchief. You are mistaken.
> What do you mean?
High Overlord Saurfang says: I have have lost track of the time I have sat in this cell. But it matters not in the end.
High Overlord Saurfang says: After all she has done, I will never return to her Horde.
High Overlord Saurfang says: Make sure you know the difference between loyalty and honor.
High Overlord Saurfang says: And pray you never have to choose.
Rokhan says: You not be comin' wit' us.
High Overlord Saurfang says: We both know you are not here for me. Those you seek are down the hall.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says: I see... If you are certain, High Overlord.
High Overlord Saurfang says: I am. Lok'tar.
Rokhan says: Come, <player>. Dis way.
It appears that Sylvanas’ ultimate goal for the war may not be peace, but an endless supply of fallen soldiers and dissenters she can kill and raise to strengthen the ranks of the Forsaken. With one more val’kyr killed in the Darkshore skirmish, leaving her with only three for protection, time is running out for Sylvanas to secure her future—otherwise if she loses more val’kyr, she cannot be resurrected one final time.
The plot turns more sinister in light of the
datamined text
examining why Vol’jin appointed Sylvanas the next Warchief. Bwonsamdi and the Lich King claim they do not support Sylvanas, as her ultimate plans threaten balance. In the article
Sylvanas' Motivation and Parallels to Arthas in the BFA Pre-Patch
, we speculate on why Sylvanas appears to be following the path of Arthas, a character she once hated.
