The Black Dragonflight in the Waking Shores (Story Spoilers)
28/07/2022 alle 03:23
The Waking Shores is the ancestral home to both Red and Black Dragonflights, and some of the zone's storyline involves the Black Dragonflight, with Wrathion's journey to find his believed destiny as the new Earth-Warder. We went through the questline in this post!
WARNING: DRAGONFLIGHT STORY SPOILERS AHEAD!
The main theme of the Waking Shores questline is revival, as we work with Alexstrasza's entourage to protect the Ruby Lifeshrine, the birthplace of all dragons. Eggs of all dragonflights are kept and tended for there, and of note is the Black lifepod, which contains no eggs. The Black tender, Mother Elion, remains hopeful though.
Our pool remains empty... the eggs we once had, lost forever to time.
And without whelps to continue our line, we have no future.
> Why do you stay here, if you have no eggs to rear?
Wrathion's major participation in the zone starts in Chapter 3 of the Waking Shores questline, where he learns that the seat of the Black Dragonflight power, Neltharus, has been breached by the Djaradin, elemental half-giants native to the Dragon Isles, perfected dragon killers. This is found out during a mission to take back an outpost from the Djaradin, and in classic Wrathion fashion, he abandons the mission to head for the Obsidian Throne.
Wrathion takes his Blacktalon Agents to a staging area. As we check the Djaradin's defenses of Neltharus, everyone agrees that there's too many of them for the Blacktalon alone, but Wrathion firmly believes that they will be fine, because "a dragon is an incalculable advantage".
Wrathion proves himself right as we invade the Obsidian Throne, though, but not in the way he wanted - As we enter the throne and start dismantling the Djaradin, we're joined by a flight of black dragons... led by Sabellian! Sabellian is the true form of Baron Sablemane, a human we find during the Burning Crusade questline in Blade's Edge Mountains. Sabellian helps us kill two of the Gronn that are killing his children in the area.
Sabellian brings with him an entourage of grown black dragons to help take Neltharus, but not before bickering with Wrathion about the latter's recklessness. It is interesting to see that his entourage takes visage forms of races seen Outland, like a Mag'har Orc, a Draenei and a Blood Elf.
Wrathion: I know not from where you hail, brother, but I cannot fault such a timely arrival.
Sabellian: Outland... were you expecting to defeat this entire army on your own, little brother? A bold move.
Wrathion: You underestimate me, "brother". Perhaps you have been too long away?
Sabellian: Perhaps you bear more of our father's stubbornness than ever you realize.
Wrathion and Sabellian work together to take the Obsidian Throne back, and it is there that Sabellian reveals that he wants the same as Wrathion wanted all along: Access to his birthright. An argument then begins between them as to who should be the leader of this new black dragonflight, and you hear arguments from both Wrathion and Sabellian's followers, as well as Archivist Edress, a drakonid that has information on both dragons.
It is also here that Sabellian reveals that he has brought eggs from his Outland flight, in the hopes of using them to safeguard the future of the Black Dragonflight.
Arguments in favor of Wrathion:
Right: Wrathion's able to make hard choices, the choices no one else will, all for the greater good.
Left: Setting Garrosh free started a war, but we needed that war to prepare for the Legion.
Talonstalker Kavia: He does what needs to be done. Honor and glory didn't help defeat the Sha or rid the world of mad dragons, Wrathion did.
Archivist Edress: Despite some questionable methods, it is hard to deny Wrathion's results. He has worked tirelessly to protect all creatures of Azeroth from numerous threats.
Arguments in favor of Sabellian:
Forgemaster Bazentus: A leader is like a finely forged sword, they must be balanced, strong, and of pure metal.
Forgemaster Bazentus: Though I like Wrathion, he is untempered. Sabellian has been forged in fire, I believe he is what we need in a leader.
Baskilan: Sabellian rallied us in Outland, not only saving us from death, but from the corruption that befell our kin.
Baskilan: All the rest--the other flights, glory-starved mortals, even that pretentious "prince"--chose to murder the afflicted rather than aid us.
Archivist Edrerss: Where an Aspect failed, Sabellian succeeded. Despite Deathwing's madness, despite the rage of the Gronn, Sabellian and his kin survived, allowing us to achieve this moment.
However, the question of whoever should become the leader of the Black Dragonflight is left unanswered, as Wrathion and Sabellian work together to escort the eggs from Neltharus to the Ruby Lifeshrine. Wrathion insists to fly them there, but Sabellian instead wants to transport them by ground, believing that the surviving Djaradin expect them to travel by air. As you escort both Dragons with a wagon full of eggs, some hijinks ensue, but their mission ultimately fails, as they are found and the wagon is destroyed.
Wrathion: Why are we taking this ridiculous contraption, again? It's agonizingly slow...
Sabellian: Our enemies will be on the lookout for us and we cannot risk an encounter while transporting the eggs. So we shall travel as mortals do to avoid their gaze.
Sabellian: If saving the future of your kind bores you, you are free to leave. I would welcome the silence.
Wrathion: Is this your idea of subtlety?
Sabellian: Quiet, whelp. I will risk no harm coming to the eggs.
Wrathion: I could assist our dear champion in defending the wagon, you know. There is no reason they have to do all the dirty work themselves.
Sabellian: And reveal ourselves to the enemy? Absolutely not. Stay on your seat.
Wrathion: This is getting ridiculous. How many "random encounters" must we suffer before you realize your ruse has failed? Let us take wing and be done with it!
Sabellian: Cease your fidgeting! If anything is outting us at risk of discovery, it is your childish impatience.
Wrathion: Finally! I was worried the eggs would hatch before reaching the Life Pools!
Sabellian: Titans, give me patience.
Thaladrax: Your kind ends today, puppets!
Wrathion: Is this the leadership you offer our people? Perhaps the others will see reason, now!
Sabellian: Whelps these days. Meet me at the Life Pools proper, champion. This is far from over.
However, as they arrive in the Ruby Lifeshrine, Sabellian reveals that the whole wagon ride was a plan of his all along - By offering himself and Wrathion as easy bait, the rest of his flight was able to bring the black dragon eggs over to the shrine without risk.
Alexstrasza: What is the meaning of this, Sabellian? Where are the eggs?
Wrathion: Yes, why don't you explain how your ridiculous plan destroyed the future of an entire flight?
Sabellian: I apologize for any misunderstandings, Life-Binder. But any report of our extinction is premature.
Sabellian: The eggs were never in danger. The cart, and my presence, were merely to draw the attention of our foes and allow my flight to move unobserved.
Sabellian: I have spent millennia rebuilding my flight. As Neltharion's heir, I pledge it, and myself, to you.
Wrathion: What are you--
Alexstrasza: These eggs are most welcome here, Sabellian. But your part in your father's twisted legacy has earned you no such right.
Alexstrasza: I will ensure the eggs are cared for, but I will not be involved in your bickering. That is for the black, not the red, to decide.
In the end, the Black Dragonflight's future is assured, but the question remains: Who will become the leader of the Black Dragonflight?
