Dragonflight Group Interview with Ion Hazzikostas
WoW Game Director/VP Ion Hazzikostas described the philosophy behind the talent revamp, in response to a discussion about talent choices in WoW Classic:
I think seeing a new generation play with those talents and work through those talent trees really underscored some of the things that, frankly, we lost when we shifted to the Mists of Panderia style talents and beyond. A big piece of that was some of the granularity, the feeling of getting a level and spending a point to customize your character to make yourself a bit better in some specific way, but also that sense of hybridity that you could have. That's something that we largely lost. And so the new talent system avoids pitting player power throughput choices against those utility hybrid choices because we know there is always a "right" outcome there. And we also understand that there is a lot of strength and flexibility in the modern talent system to let players customize their talents for a particular encounter, or for dungeons vs. PvP. We don't want to lose any of that.
New Talent Trees in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight
The preliminary images of the new talent system certainly display a much greater level of complexity than we've seen before in World of Warcraft.
Talents will now affect you every level, not just every several levels as they do now. Choices within the talent tree will open up other possibilities, much like a more-complex version of the Conduit system introduced in Shadowlands. New spells and abilities will open up with each level.
Players will have two trees available:
Class tree: focused on class utility
Spec tree: focused on performing your role
Talent types are represented by three different shapes:
Squares: active abilities
Circles: passive abilities
Hexagons: choose an ability
Druid Restoration Tree
Druid Balance Tree
Class Tree Initial Abilities
Some Class Tree abilities will already be activated when you start your character, but you will also be given 1 Class Tree talent point to spend so you can start customizing right away. The design plan is that picking a specialization becomes a much more important part of your class, and that this makes picking talents and experimenting with them a much more rewarding experience.
Talent Preset Loadouts
Players will be able to change talents as often as they are able to do now, with similar mechanics expected. You will also be able to save and load different talent tree specs based on your activities!
In the lower left corner of the new Talent Tree UI, you will see a dropdown menu where you can create, import, and share new loadouts:
