On this day, seven years ago, June 23, 2015, we went back to the jungle and raided Hellfire Citadel. Patch 6.2.0: Fury of Hellfire unlocked a new zone, new systems, and a new raid. Ostensibly the Draenor of 30 years ago's equivalent of Hellfire Peninsular, Tanaan could not have been more different. Lush jungle, swamps, and a host of enemy subzones clustered around the fully armed and operational Hellfire Citadel as Warlords of Draenor arrived at its conclusion.
Having lured Grommash Hellscream’s former lieutenants with promises of untold power, Gul’dan has delivered the Iron Horde to the Burning Legion. Now, he floods the jungles of Tanaan with energies from the fallen pit lord Mannoroth, creating an army of fel orcs brimming with demonic strength and insatiable bloodlust. Even the Iron Horde’s mighty war machines have been infused with fel energy, while the Shadow Council recruits fanatical arakkoa to help crush all who oppose the Legion.
Whether Horde or Alliance, as commander of your side’s garrison in Draenor you must oversee the construction of warships to assault Tanaan and disrupt the Iron Horde’s frenzied preparations -- then stop Gul’dan before his fel masters can gain a foothold on Draenor. If you fail, there will be nothing left to prevent the Burning Legion’s obliteration of Azeroth.
New Raid: Hellfire Citadel
Hellfire Citadel, located in the center of Tanaan Jungle, was a magnificent 13 boss raid that began with a thematic assault on the citadel and culminated in a confrontation with Archimonde himself, along with the epilogue for the Warlords of Draenor expansion.
Archimonde dropped the
Resti del Caos
on both Heroic and Mythic difficulties. This item began a short questline that awarded the
Redini del Custode del Bosco
flying moose mount. This led to the excellent social phenomenon known as Moose Runs, where raiders would "carry" other players on a kill of Archimonde to get them the mount.
New Zone: Tanaan Jungle
Deep within Tanaan Jungle, the manipulations of the warlock Gul’dan have twisted what remains of the Iron Horde into a sinister new form—an army of fel orcs brimming with demonic strength and insatiable bloodlust. Now Gul’dan continues his machinations from inside the seemingly impenetrable Hellfire Citadel, plotting to open a portal for a massive invasion force.
In addition to the Hellfire Citadel raid, Tanaan Jungle had a plethora of sub-zones which each housed various activities, including daily quests, rares, pet battles, treasures, events, and much more. The sub-zones included:
The Iron Front
Zeth'Gol
Ruins of Kra'nak
Ironhold Harbor
The Fel Forge
Throne of Kil'jaden
The Dark Portal
Vol'mar
Lion's Watch
Fang'rila
Temple of Sha'naar

New Systems
Garrison Shipyard and Naval Missions
Players were able to add a shipyard to their Garrisons. While the idea of building ships and having a ship based system could have been quite exciting, it turned out to just be another Mission Table grind. That said, the Shipyard did have its own Hearthstone, the
Bussola dell'Ammiraglio
, which made returning to your Garrison much easier if your Garrison Hearthstone was on cooldown.
You can check out our Warlords of Draenor Shipyard Guide, written seven years ago, for all the details about this mini-game system.

Mythic Dungeons
Dungeons were given a new difficulty level, Mythic. Mythic dungeons were intended to serve as weekly content comparable to Normal Raids, but for small groups. Mythic dungeons had a weekly lockout, and dropped higher level gear, a system that persists to this day.
Bonus Events
Bonus Events were introduced in this patch. This is another system that persists largely in its original form with these features:
A rotating schedule of different activities granting a passive bonus to a particular game activity each week
A once-per-event quest with a noteworthy reward for accomplishing a goal related to the current bonus activity
The type of Bonus Event and when it takes place are noted on the in-game calendar
The seven original Bonus Events included:
Timewalking - The Burning Crusade
Timewalking - Wrath of the Lich King
Draenor Dungeons - Defeating enemies in Draenor dungeons awarded reputation with an appropriate faction. Completing Mythic-difficulty dungeons during the event awarded a Heroic Hellfire Citadel Raid cache.
Battlegrounds - Characters earned triple Honor points from random Battlegrounds. Completing the event quest awarded 500 Conquest Points, which did not count toward the weekly Conquest cap.
Arena Skirmishes - Characters earned triple Honor points from random Arena Skirmish matches during this event. Completing the event quest awarded 500 Conquest Points, which did not count toward the weekly Conquest cap.
Apexis - eligible creatures dropped bonus Apexis Crystals During the Sign of Apexis bonus event. Also, completing several area assault objectives during the event awarded Oil to fuel Naval Missions in the Shipyard.
Pet Battles - Pets earned triple experience from pet battles. Also, winning PvP Pet Battles as a part of the quest awarded the player with an
Pietra Evolutiva Definitiva
.
Overall, Fury of Hellfire was a beautiful patch, filled with a plethora of excellent content and a very well received raid. Unfortunately, being the last patch of the expansion, it was inevitably soured by the usual between-expansions content drought.
