Choosing the Right Mouse
The first step towards mastering an MMO gaming mouse is making sure you choose the right one. Whether you’re a competitive PvP player, a casual achievement hunter, or a Mythic raider, MMO players universally benefit from three things: more buttons, macros, and control. Through that desire the MMO gaming mouse was born, and while there are many to choose from, our favorite is the

The truth is, most PC gamers aren’t just MMO players; they enjoy a wide variety of games, and not all games need a dozen extra buttons. This is what makes the Naga Trinity’s modular design so great, allowing you to quickly swap between 2, 7, and 12 extra buttons to best suit your current needs. While it doesn't quite get you as many button combinations as Roccat's modular
Nyth
, it does provide more options than Corsair's
Scimitar Pro
, which just features a sliding rail to adjust the button placement.
The Naga Trinity is the perfect middle ground for WoW players, since one of the three combinations are bound to suit your individual playstyle. Most importantly, each button is uniquely designed to stand apart in order to minimize misclicks. When you're just starting to use a MMO mouse with more thumb buttons than you're used to, misclicks are inevitable. This is why it's so crucial to choose a mouse that's comfortable and easy to get used to.
Training Your Brain
Mastering your MMO mouse takes a little bit of work. It's easy to just stick to a few extra buttons and forget about the rest, but you'd be missing out on a lot of the gameplay improvements they bring. Our biggest recommendation here is to bind every single extra thumb button you have, even if you don't plan on using them all in the end. The more likely you are to press that keybinding, the better.
This allows you to start building muscle memory for each individual button press. Once you've trained your brain to recognize and press all of those buttons, it becomes second nature to use them accurately in stressful environments like duels or raids. Depending on the complexity of your mouse and your own familiarity with it, this process can take some time. But the end result is totally worth it.
Recommended Keybinds
Since every WoW player customizes their action bars in their own unique ways, it'll take some time and tweaking to find a MMO mouse keybinding setup that works for you. The best thing you can do here is to bind every extra button you have and make adjustments to the ones you find yourself using least. These are some general guidelines to help you out:
Middle Mouse Wheel Click
- Default bound: None. This is a very accessible button that is difficult to press accidentally. That's why we like to use this for
push-to-talk
activation.
Mouse Button 3 & 4
- Default bound: None. Most mice have at least two extra buttons. We use these for crucial
consumables
or
cooldowns
since they're easily accessible.
Side Mouse 1-12
- Default bound: These numbers are usually automatically bound to whatever is on your main action bar 1 through =. This is where you can get really creative with a MMO mouse. Bind your
main abilities
here and you'll find it much easier to move while casting. You should also reserve one button to toggle
auto-run
. This makes it easy to move around if you ever need to briefly free your hands.
Embrace Mouseover Macros
One of the biggest benefits of a MMO gaming mouse is that it allows you to use your skills, consumables, macros and more while freeing up the keyboard to simultaneously move your character. This makes you very quick on your feet in both pvp situations and raid environments. It gets even better once you start using mouseover macros. If you're unfamiliar with them, we have a

A mouseover macro is a macro that uses the target modifier
@mouseover
, which casts the spell on the target that the mouse is currently hovering. This works when hovering over unit frames as well as actual characters. It works on all sorts of objects including yourself, neutral targets, allies and enemies. If you can target it, you can use a mouseover macro for it. A
@cursor
macro functions in a similar way, where the ability is immediately cast at the ground beneath your mouse cursor. This is particularly useful for quickly casting abilities like

These macros can be used for all sorts of spells, consumables and even toys. You can use them to heal an entire raid without having to click on a target. Bind your whole healing ability portfolio to mouseover macros on your MMO mouse and you'll find it much easier to keep players alive while dodging mechanics.

MMO Mouse Software

Good software makes it easy to adjust DPI settings, switch between profiles and most importantly, assign custom macros.
