Following the Jailer encounter in the Sepulcher of the First Ones raid, a special cinematic plays. Spoilers ahead.
Jailer Strategy Guide
In a surprise
intro cinematic
, we learn that the Jailer was trying to harness the power of Azeroth through the Forge of Souls underneath Icecrown Citadel, using Azerite in his encounter.
Now defeated, in this ending cinematic we see all of the covenant leaders (perhaps a flashback to his initial betrayal) chide the Jailer for the path he's taken, to which the Jailer replies: "You preserve that which is doomed. A cosmos divided will not survive what is to come." With those final words, we see the veil over Icecrown Citadel close and the Jailer reduced to a lifeless robot--similar to the Arbiter at the end of Sanctum of Domination.
As to what comes next? We'll have to tune in
April 19th
to learn about the upcoming Warcraft expansion, but it seems the Jailer was worried about an
even bigger
threat if his ultimate goal was to unite the cosmos. Perhaps the looming threat is the
mysterious force
teased in several in-game writings:
And if the six (or seven, or... excuse my imprecision) each vie with one another to claim it, could they be driven by the unconscious knowledge that there exists some other force outside our understanding that seeks it as well?
