Battle of Dazar'alor employs a special
storytelling device
, allowing each faction to see the events of the war from the opposite perspective. However, if you've only really played one faction, you may be unfamiliar with the importance and backstories of the characters you are fighting against. Who are the major characters in Battle of Dazar'alor and why should you care about them?
In preparation for Dazar'alor, we have written biographies of important characters you will face off against in the raid. If you're interested in a long read that details the life events of these major characters, these linked articles are for you! You can find even more character summaries in our
lore guide section
.
After Battle of Dazar'alor launches, stay tuned for more story-focused articles including cinematic analysis, the Story of Dazar'alor with Nobbel87, and examining the success of the battle for both factions.
Moving forward, for every major patch and content update, we will write biographies for new important characters. These will supplement our monthly lore spotlights with Nobbel87 and also serve as a centralized place to compile all the datamined broadcast text for a character throughout the PTR.
Alliance
High Tinker Mekkatorque
Unrivaled in their ingenuity, Gelbin Mekkatorque's inventions have been instrumental to the Alliance's attack on Dazar'alor. His state-of-the-art armor is outfitted with the latest--and deadliest--ordnance that gnomish engineering can offer.
Gelbin Mekkatorque, the King of the Gnomes, most recently thwarts Gallywix and engages in some Gnomish vs Goblin engineering trash-talking in the
Gallywix Plan
step of the 8.1 Horde War Campaign. His appearance in the raid opens the door to speculation that we may be getting a Gnome-centric cinematic (finally!) and more lore surrounding
Mechagon in Patch 8.2

Jaina Proudmoore
As the Alliance fleet withdraws from Daza'alor, Lady Jaina Proudmoore stays behind with a handful of Kul Tiran vessels to slow the Horde's pursuit. Storm clouds gather overhead as Jaina leads her pursuers deeper into the Great Sea, where she will attempt to turn the odds in her favor.
Jaina Proudmoore is the current Lord Admiral of Kul Tiras, former leader of the Kirin Tor, and former ruler of the port city of Theramore.
Daughter of Daelin and Katherine Proudmoore and younger sister of Derek and Tandred Proudmoore, she was personally trained in the arts of magic by the legendary Archmage Antonidas of Dalaran, and is considered to be the most powerful human sorceress alive.

King Rastakhan
For over two hundred years, King Rastakhan has ruled the Zandalari empire. Since the fall of Rezan, he has turned to a new patron--Bwonsamdi, the loa of death. The dark bargain he has made grants him the power to crush his enemies... but at what cost?
King Rastakhan is the ruler of the Zandalari Empire. According to the book For Council and King, he rules all of the Zandalari from his golden throne, empowered by the Zandalari Gods. Thanks to the blessings of Rezan, the Loa of Kings, Rastakhan has been able to rule the Zandalari Empire for over two hundred years.

Bwonsamdi
Bwonsamdi is a very powerful loa that controls the spirits of the dead. Bwonsamdi mainly has control of the souls of trolls that pledge allegiance to him, however, Bwonsamdi is capable of performing a ritual of binding with someone. Once the ritual is complete, any souls that came from creatures killed by the person will go to Bwonsamdi's care.
As Rastakhan has entered into a pact with the loa of death, Bwonsamdi influences many aspects of Season 2, including the

The Alliance have special interactions with two characters that later become bosses in the Battle of Dazar'alor.
Grong
After volunteering to become a living super weapon, the once-intelligent Grong devolved into a giant rampaging behemoth. But though his mind may have deteriorated, Grong's strength is more immense than it has ever been.
Once willing to sacrifice everything to serve the Alliance, the mighty Grong has been raised from the dead and pitted against his former friends. Fighting on behalf of the Horde would be anathema to this noble soul, whose only hope for release is a clean death.
Alliance players may remember Grong from the
Secret Weapon
chapter of the 8.1 War Campaign, in which he uses the Embiggifier to convert his intelligence to strength in order to fight the Horde. He is first a Horde encounter in Battle of Dazar'alor, and after his defeat, Bwonsamdi resurrects him which leads to the Alliance version of the encounter.

Opulence
Long ago, King Dazar had his golden treasury enchanted so that it would rise against anyone except its rightful owner. Many an unsuspecting thief has been slain by the very riches they coveted, serving as an important lesson to those who would steal from the throne.
Alliance players will remember Opulence from the
Abyssal Scepter
step of the 8.1 War Campaign, in which Master Mathias Shaw and Flynn Fairwind infiltrated the Zandalari Treasury to take back the Abyssal Scepter. Jaina and Magister Umbric combine the powers of arcane and void to create a portal to the Treasury. Opulence is not happy we have stolen the scepter.
