April 1 always makes the news cycle a little bit weird in the games industry. Luckily, the world seems far too tired of the usual crap this year to have pulled too many mean-spirited pranks. Meanwhile
Fanbyte
, Wowhead’s sister site devoted to all other games, covered most of the key stories that were actually real once again.
No Man’s Sky’s Expeditions Update is All About Exploring the Galaxy Together
- This game just won’t stop getting bigger. We’re largely okay with that! What many once saw as a disaster at release has basically bought back all its goodwill and more with free content and expansions since launch. Now No Man’s Sky has another big one, in the form of free seasonal content that automatically pulls players together to achieve common goals.
Sony Confirms Shutdown of PS3, PSP, and Vita Digital Stores
- Now for some bad news… Sony is shutting down a significant portion of its online stores for older hardware. You’ll still be able to download games you already own (for now), but won’t be able to purchase anything. It’s an awkward topic that many decry as bad for the preservation of video game history. Especially given previous comments by Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan, where he opined that customers simply don’t care about legacy games. Despite, you know, the endless stream of successful HD remakes and games like WoW Classic.
No, Seriously, Today’s the Last Day to Get Some Mario Games (and also Fire Emblem)
- Speaking of delisting old games: Nintendo did the same damn thing this week. They killed Mario. Vice Games reporter Patrick Klepek also elaborated on this strange, time-limited decision with interviews explaining it was a purely mercenary decision from the outwardly joyful company. FOMO sells games, I guess.
