The Process of Creating
We were lucky enough to get a few minutes of Santiago's time to find out a little bit about the process of making these maps.
My maps are generally based on real-life images, but the same technique applies to these maps based directly on the geography of WoW itself.
Having a territory like this, I first make a sketch to locate the ocean, rivers, lakes, etc. (anything that has to do with water). Then, using the reference image (in this case, the mini-map images), we begin to delineate the mountains, structures, and other additions to the territory.
Once everything is located, I proceed to draw everything: buildings, structures, or emblematic monuments of the sites. This is the part that takes the longest to complete.
After that, we begin coloring everything: the territory and its regions, the buildings and their respective colors. We also add the slope lines, extra decorations such as trails, and other additions.
When the map (in its graphical component) is ready, we add the respective titles. What's the name of the place (it's written one way or another), and that this place in the game is called "X". for the map, it can also be X, or it can be modified to better match the surroundings (for example, the Scarlet Cartographer's Tower is an addition the devs made, and I renamed it that way based on the giant telescope).
Finally, we added subtle details like shadows on the slopes or lighting on the buildings, making it even more similar to the style of our beloved videogame.
Now, this is the process of a fan making a map. Keep in mind that on the PTR everything can change. It happened to me, especially during the creation of these maps, that the builds modified the territory, and I, with great patience, had to draw everything new or, in the worst case, redo much of what was already there.
That, in a nutshell, is the creative process.
