Chromie Time Temporarily Restricts Group Finder to Dungeons from that Expansion

There's a lot of confusion going around with the way queuing for dungeons works in the
Shadowlands
Prepatch, as Chromie Time initially limits players to queuing for dungeons from the selected expansion. As
highlighted on Reddit
, this limitation splits up the player base and can lead to some extended wait times.
On the surface, this would appear to make sense, as the entire point of Chromie Time is to condense the story down to a single expansion - it doesn't make a whole lot of narrative sense to be leveling through Warlords of Draenor content and then queue into a Burning Crusade or Cataclysm dungeon, however the game takes a curious approach to this idea, as it doesn't actually stop players from finding themselves in those dungeons! With the current system, if a group hasn't been found after a certain amount of time in queue, it will prompt players to
search for dungeons in other expansions
as well.
This begs the question as to why the game limits players in the first place, rather than allowing them to join a queue for all or select expansion dungeons from the start. With the old system, players had the freedom to queue within many
different bracketed options
(which overlapped based on their current level).
While Chromie Time is a vast improvement to the previous leveling process, the nature of splitting players up into 7 different expansions plays hell on dungeon queues, especially if one is perceived to be better or worse than others and ends up consolidating the player base. A better solution would be a series of checkboxes, allowing players to search the queue within selected expansions, similar to queuing for specific dungeons now.
For the time being however, it's very important that players realize their choice of Chromie Timewalking Campaign also controls which expansion the group finder will initially queue for, only expanding to other expansions if nothing suitable can be found, leading to extended wait times in some situations. That said, it does not stop you from going into other expansion content scaled to your level, and you can go back to Chromie in Stormwind or Orgrimmar to change Timewalking Campaigns at any time. Despite this limitation, Chromie Time still represents a vast improvement to the old style of leveling, and you can learn more about optimizing your adventure to level 50 in our many leveling guides.
