Castle Nathria Tuning Harder Than Expected - Huntsman Altimor, Council of Blood, Sludgefist

Castle Nathria is now open for both NA and EU servers, with many players heading into the Normal and Heroic raid for the first time. However, many players quickly realized that for Normal and Heroic Castle Nathria, bosses like Huntsman Altimor and Sludgefist were much more difficult than expected. We break down some of the problem spots for many guilds.
Normal Mode Problem Points
Remember that many of these issues may be caused with players at lower gear levels and no Legendary. As players eventually acquire a Legendary and a higher item level, many of these problems may not exist anymore, but Castle Nathria is probably the hardest Day 1 Normal raid in a while.
Altimor il Predatore
Huntsman Altimor was considered overtuned by the community due to his
Cercapeccati
DoT. This is a 30 second DoT that ticks every 2 seconds that dealt massive damage to these three players that basically required the full attention of the healers. Luckily, the rest of the fight wasn't too crazy, so many guilds were able to scrape by but for a second boss, many guilds wiped more on this boss than they expected. If you can overheal this boss, do it for the
Cercapeccati
.

Sun King's Salvation
The Sun King's Salvation encounter was weird on the first day, because many groups were using the
Piedistallo d'Anima
to heal Kael'thas. However, the
Piedistallo d'Anima
increases the damage done to you with every tick, but
does not increase the amount transferred to Kael'thas
effectively making the
Piedistallo d'Anima
a big trap. Once guilds found that out and started just using offhealers to heal the boss instead of using the Soul Pedestals, the fight progressed along much quicker.

The Council of Blood
The Council of Blood was reworked many times on Beta and on live, it turned to be a very highly tuned fight. Only 7 guilds have currently killed this fight on Heroic which seems low for a mid-tier Heroic boss for Day 1.
On Normal mode, this boss has some nasty overlaps and deadly mechanics.
Affondo Evasivo
will kill any DPS if they get hit by it two times in a row, and the pools from
Esibizione Oscura
kill players very quickly if they don't react to the pools under them. If you kill Stavros last like
our guide
mentions to do, you'll find that the
Pazzi Danzanti
add has a ton of health and may require Bloodlust or cooldowns.
Council of Blood Guide
Sludgefist
Sludgefist may be the hardest boss in the instance currently. It has a tight DPS check, requires good positioning for the
Macerie Cadenti
and one-shot mechanics, even for normal mode! No guild has killed Sludgefist on Heroic just yet.
Sludgefist Guide
For Normal mode, the
Catena
s continue to be a one-shot and affect most of your raid.
Macerie Cadenti
spawns VERY OFTEN and seems to have a spawn rate that if the space is used efficiently (but not perfectly), it takes up the majority of the room and leaves you with almost no space in the last phase. These two mechanics combined will probably cause some broken
Catena
s as the coordination needed to efficiently place
Macerie Cadenti
and stick together as a group seems a little high for normal mode. We had to change our strategy multiple times to come up with one that worked for how often the rubble fell.
But that's not all as the Sludgefist damage check is currently very tightly tuned for Normal mode. In ~183 gear and on alts, we had to use basically all our allotted time to kill the boss with almost no deaths -- and optimizing cooldowns and Bloodlust. As Sludgefist enters a damage phase around every minute, you'll want to set up your cooldowns as follows:
Pull: 1 & 2 minute cooldowns
First Damage Phase: 1& 3 minute cooldowns
Second Damage Phase: 1& 2 minute cooldowns
Third Damage Phase: 1 minute cooldowns
Fourth Damage Phase: All cooldowns + Bloodlust
You can take a look at my guild's Normal Sludgefist kill here:
Stone Legion Generals Undertuned
Compared to Sludgefist, Stone Legion Generals definitely felt undertuned.
Stone Legion Generals might be the easiest fight in the instance on Normal mode with them doing almost no important mechanics except for
Eruzione Riverberante
soaks and
Combo dello Spacca Rocce
. Normal mode doesn't have
Lama Perversa
AoE at all, so this mechanic basically just bleeds two people... that's it. After defeating Sludgefist, this is your reward essentially, some higher item level pieces of loot and essentially a target dummy with some soaks.

Sire Denathrius Feels Just Right
For an end boss, Normal Denathrius felt pretty much where it needed to be difficulty wise, if it wasn't for Sludgefist two bosses ahead of him. You stack off with 4
Fardello del Peccato
stacks but need to cleanse your entire raid (minus specific classes like DKs and Shaman), down to 2 stacks in order to survive the
Marcia del Penitente
intermission.
Prezzo di Sangue
doesn't kill you on Normal if you accidently even out your stacks on Normal mode, and
Ora di Mangiare
players just need to spread out. So Phase 1 on normal reduces the mechanics down to a DPS check that you easily have if you've beaten Sludgefist and safely cleansing everyone's stacks down to 2 or less.
Phase 2 doesn't have any mechanics that are particularly lethal unless you don't run away for
Mano della Distruzione
, though it does require some ranged DPS to kill the
Cabalista Cremisi
adds that spawn across the platform. The only hard part about Phase 2 is getting a clean push into Phase 3 with no adds alive which will be much easier with timers.
Phase 3's main mechanic is don't get knocked off the platform by
Dolore Frantumante
and kill the boss before it kills you. Phase 1 is probably the hardest Phase due to the coordination required on Normal mode.

Heroic Castle Nathria
It's important to note that many of the top guilds are currently doing splits at the moment, and with the current tuning and undergeared characters with no Legendaries it's making Heroic quite the challenge! Guilds have reported trouble on Huntsman Altimor due to
Cercapeccati
once again, as well as Council of Blood.
You can currently see from the
Raider.IO Heroic Castle Nathria Leaderboards
that 5 guilds are currently leading the way with 7/10 Heroic with Sludgefist seemingly requiring more gear to make it easier, especially considering how difficult that boss already was for Normal Mode.
