Want to know the best way to gear up in Dragonflight before raids open? Normally the best gear comes from Mythic Dungeons, but in Dragonflight the highest item level gear comes from rare farming and weekly events!
Best Way to Gear Up in Dragonflight
The best way to gear up before raids open in Dragonflight is to...
kill rares
and
completing rare events
. Mythic dungeon gear is not the top end item level.
Doing this, you could be over 380 item level going into next week which is equivalent to LFR gear/Mythic +6 dungeon.
Item Level Scaling
Rares and weekly events in Dragonflight drop gear that actually scale based on your item level. In previous expansions, gear from Rares would stop scaling at a cap well below Mythic 0 gear. However, rare gear in this expansion can scale to 378+!
Daily Lockout: Regular Rares
Regular rares in Dragonflight have a daily lockout and aren't guaranteed to give loot. These seem to be capped at 378 item level, a whole 6 item levels above Mythic 0 loot, but they scale based on your average item level. If you're only 340 item level, you may only get a 346 piece.
If you want to farm rares, we'd recommend looking in the Group Finder and using an addon to know the location of rares such as
HandyNotes: Dragonflight
. Rares aren't guaranteed to drop a piece of loot, and may not even drop a piece of loot that you can use.
However, farming enough rares will easily get you to 378, better than you can get from Mythic 0 dungeons!
Weekly Lockout: Events and Special Rares
There are a couple of events and quests that can only be done weekly that guarantee a piece of loot which also scales with your item level:
Siege of Dragonscale Keep
Tuskarr Community Feast
Grand Hunts
Trial of Flood and Trial of Elements
Aiutare l'Accordo
The cap on these seems to be significantly higher than 378, with reports of 382 gear (including weapons), and this could scale even higher! As these are weekly and also scale with item level, we'd recommend doing these at the
end of the week
once you've exhausted non-scaling rewards (Mythic dungeons) and also gotten more gear from daily rare killing.
