Today we will take a look at the DPS balance in Castle Nathria during the Week of February 23. For this analysis we will use data provided by
Warcraft Logs Mythic Castle Nathria statistics
.
Warcraft Logs' Castle Nathria Statistics Page
Disclaimers and Source
The data for this article was taken from the
Castle Nathria Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs
under the Shadowlands Season 1 partition at the 95th percentile for Mythic difficulty in the window.
The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the state of class balance for Castle Nathria in Shadowlands Season 1, looking at the data of the most recent week in the raid.
We say perspective, as there are inherent biases in looking at the data this way.
Specs that are considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they actually are.
This happens as many performance-oriented players will tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing even further the gap between top and bottom specs.
The balance between specs is very delicate and will likely change throughout Season 1, as player acquire more gear, different classes and specs tend to perform better with more secondaries.

Spec Analysis for Week of February 9th
With the meta more stable after the recent
buffs to many specs
, we've had some movements in the rankings for this week. Note that the Frost Mage sudden move in rankings was caused by the solution of an issue with the way statistics are shown in Warcraft Logs,
as we discussed in the last post
. For this week, we've asked our Retribution Paladin and Elemental Shaman Class Writers to give more input about their specs in Castle Nathria.
Retribution Paladin
Although Retribution has risen in rankings slightly in the last week, this doesn't quite tell the entire story. If you look at it from a boss by boss breakdown, Ret is middle to bottom of the pack for the first seven bosses, and then near the top for the last three. In a normal single target scenario on most earlier bosses, like Hungering Destroyer or Artificer Xy'mox, Ret's sustained single target damage is just pretty lackluster. However, on Sludgefist its 1 minute burst talents are perfect for the fight's pillar timings, and it's one of the highest melee DPS for the fight as a result. Similarly, on Stone Legion Generals and in the first phase of Denathrius the frequency of add spawns lines up perfectly for Final Reckoning to perform very well. In most situations Ret isn't an especially strong spec at the moment, particularly on single target, but the last few fights of the raid just happen to have very good mechanic timings to keep it relevant.
In addition, more Rets than before could be receiving PI. Many of the top logs receive multiple PIs, and it makes sense since Ret benefits quite a lot from the buff: Haste significantly increases its damage during wings, its cooldown is also 2 minutes, and it's one of the more cooldown reliant specs to begin with. Since a lot of Rets also started as Venthyr and initially crafted the Mad Paragon, then swapped to Kyrian later, they've only recently been able to craft the highest rank of both Tempest of the Lightbringer, which is the best AoE legendary, and either Relentless Inquisitor or the Magistrate's Judgment, which both perform better than the Mad Paragon for the Execution Sentence build that most players like to use. The ability to use other legendaries depending on the situation is something that affects Ret a lot more than other specs that will often only use one legendary regardless of the fight style or number of enemies.
Elemental Shaman
As we get deeper into Castle Nathria, Elemental is slipping downwards in ranks due to an issue that Blizzard appears to be looking to address in 9.0.5 - our AoE is uncharacteristically weak this tier (especially burst AoE) and in the case of Stone Legion Generals that we don't have great 2-target cleave for the final phase of the fight. On Denathrius our damage to Echoes of Sin in phase 1 is minimal, and while our sustained single-target is strong we don't have burst single-target cooldowns to take advantage of Wracking Pain windows to help nuke down P2 adds on Denathrius all that well.
In theory we're likely to continue to see some additional volatility from this, but Elemental is likely to remain around this ranking until 9.0.5 and the significant buffs to Chain Lightning & Earthquake hit live.
