I'm almost positive this mission is just to teach you how to lose your Destroyer and make another one. If anyone doesn't lose a ship on this mission I will be surprised.

Fun fact: it is (currently) possible to complete this mission and lose no ships.

When you do the intro to Tanaan jungle, talk to Vindicator Krethos and purchase the Battleship blueprint and learn it. Then, when you go back to your shipyard to do the naval mission introduction, and he sends you to build a destroyer, make at least one battleship. Note that this battleship will not have the expedited 1 minute build time. You'll still need to build a destroyer to continue the quest, but when you actually send off the mission, send the battleship and transport.

The mission will still fail, but both ships will survive (only confirmed with two or three samples).

I assume the mission is just rigged to find a "Destroyer" and sink it. The only real benefit to doing this is if the destroyer you built randoms a crew you want to keep. Having said that, seeing if you can random a battleship with the right counter and fail a 100% mission might be worth it...
