Horde (or Alliance) can also fish these out of oily pools in both north Barrens and Stonetalon in the goblin areas. I've gotten all of mine from fishing.

I can't find these on any mobs anymore. I killed 100-ish Harvesters and Venturers and found zero.

I have been to all the areas listed and even tried fishing for "flask of Oil" all for nothing.. I wrote a ticket about it and got a reply saying that they couldn't give out any hints for quests or drops..If anyone has any information about this please post it so I can stop losing my mind looking for it.

As of the 9th of December, I went and killed 100+ of the harvest reapers in Westfall, and not one of them dropped a Flask. Are they just glitched, or what?

Unfortunately, the Jansen Stead is now full of humans, and the hay bales between it and the pumpkin farm are no longer populated with harvest golems. The energized harvest reapers on the Molsen Farm don't appear lootable after killed. Systematic elimination of the harvest watchers on Saldean's Farm and harvest reapers on the Dead Acre provided no oils, but did land over 60 defective gears, 7 greens lowb items, and a bunch of copper and flimsy sprockets.

A run of Deadmines provided more gypsy tunics than I can count, but no oils to date. Still looking.

I talked to a GM today, he told me that they were gonna do either of these three things as a solution to the problem:

1. Get the item 'flask of oil' back into the game
2. Change the recepies that require them so that they will no longer be required
3. Delete the recepies that require the oil

It doesn't seem like there will be solution untill the next patch is out.

Same here no drops even with the new 4.06 patch really disappointed I really want to make a Gnomish Universal Remote what they should do is have the engineering vendors sell the Oil instead...oh well all we can hope for is the next patch fixing this :(

I don't know about the above comments, but I have mined Harvest Reapers in Westfall for the past 2 days and nothing but junk. Very dissapointing. Note to Bliz, when something works, DON"T MESS WITH IT. You have IMPROVED a situation that means just another hardship for Engineers.

Also waiting 2 days for a response from a GM and no reply.

I am Replyn here so you dont farm for an hr before readin all the way down (like i did). Flasks were removed from the game and re-added as an engineer drop (after Cata). You have to "engineer" the corpses of the Harvest Reavers and Harvest Watchers in Westfall. It does drop but it is a very low drop rate. I looted 5 in 1 1/2 hrs. after 400+ kills. Its about a 1% drop rate. I farmed the Harvest Watchers in Saldean's Farm. It sucked, they are spread out but they have an ok spawn rate. Also there is a vendor right there too. So you can sell all the junk you pick up. I had to 3x.

1st & 2nd took 35 kills, 3rd 75, 4th 50, 5th took over 200 kills :(

Plus side if you have not got ur "westfall chicken" pet yet u can get him there when you get bored.

Just to let everyone know, this has been fixed in 4.1. I wanted to make the very coveted but ultimately useless Defibrillatore dei Goblin and trekked out to Marche Occidentali to farm Mietitore. After reading the posts here I prepared for the hours of toil others have endured but no, (2) Fiaschetta di Olio dropped within the first few minutes of farming. Fluke, I tested again, nope they are dropping relatively easy now, roughly 25% by my estimation. The trip obviously is not fun...but at the least there is a reason to make it now.

Engineering required. Oh and the cables rarely work so weigh the desire before you make these...

I got 2 it in ~5-10 minutes by farming Harvest Reapers in Westfall. Either I am very lucky, or they upped the drop rate.

Confirmed - As of whenever today is, these do drop from "mining" the harvest watchers in front of Saldean's farm, albeit with a VERY low drop rate (either less than 1% or i was really unlucky, over an hour of killing to get 1).

My suggestion - don't waste these on goblin jumper cables, the Gnomish Universal Remote is where it's at.

My baby engineer has one Flask of Oil, and I was trying to remember where she got it. She didn't go through Westfall. Then it clicked for me - Loch Modan! One of the quests in Loch Modan has a cave of mechanicals which are salvageable, so it must've dropped there. As I recall from my last trips through Westfall (which, admittedly, have been a while) the mechanicals there had a longer respawn rate than I'd prefer, so if you're tired of there, visit the cave in Loch Modan and kill some battle-chickens!

Drop rate off proto-striders and haywire battle-chickens in loch modan is way better than the mechanicals in westfall. Had 2 within the first 15 minutes. Spent at least on hour on harvest reapers/watchers just to get one.

For Horde characters, you need to go to Saldean's Farm and kill the Harvest Watchers. It took me about 80 kills to get Flask of Oil x 2.

Just finished farming four Flasks of Oil for the Jumper Cables and the Universal Remote. Sure enough, they never drop as loot, only as a reward for harvesting the corpses using Engineering skill. I farmed the Harvest Watchers at Saldean's farm in Westfall (more of them and higher spawn rate than Harvest Reapers). I'd estimate the success rate at about 1/50. Good luck to all my fellow Engineering purists.

I just spent an hour farming the Guardiano Mietitore in Marche Occidentali. Here is what I got from using my engineering skill after looting the corpses:

So, I've hunted Venture Co. in Stonetalon for about 6 hrs, and in NBarrens for about 8 hrs. I have my Eng in Westfall and I'm killing and Salvaging Harvest Watchers. Nada. All I get from the salvaging is trash.
Can we please make this a common vendor item? PLEASE!
It's a basic enough realish Engineering item, it should be used more often. If it gets to a vendor, it could be used for all kinds of pets and such.
It could be used to help pets in the pet battles that are coming, too.

An update: by "mining" the harvest watchers with my engineer I was able to get two flasks of oil. The first dropped after about fifty and the second after about ninety were killed and looted. So, even though it wasn't fast it is still possible and it took less than two hours. So hang in there!

I didn't figure this out until this morning. So engineering allows you to "skin" mechanical devices you defeat. So like with the Skinning ability you loot the body and click on the body again and take more out of the body, which causes the body to fade away. I got my flasks of oil defeating and then "skinning" the Proto Striders near Farstrider Lodge in Loch Modan.

Engineering didn't always do this, it must be a new development.

I have advice for those of you who are trying to find Flasks of Oil post-Cataclysm for your Goblin Jumper Cables. I went to Loch Modan to farm the Proto-Striders. I went through the cave 3 times, killing both striders and also the chickens. This is what I harvested:

59x Broken Cogs
9x Decoupled Couplings
33x Fractured Geartooths
1x Heavy Blasting Powder
2x Green Armors (one from Optimo)
2x Gray Armors
4x Flasks of Oil

Don't waste your time killing and skinning the robot chickens, they don't drop or skin-drop oil. The Proto-Striders do not DROP the Flasks, you must skin them with Mining/Engineering to get the Flasks. The first time I went through the cave, I didn't get any flasks from skinning. The second and third time, I had two skin-drop each time. So, don't give up! The flasks are there, you may not get them the first time, but you might the second time.

I'm a bit of a pack rat and had a stack of these in my bank since like 2007. I was saving em for a rainy day but never had any use for em. It's not like they were ever in short supply, so I finally chucked em last year during a vault cleaning....
Trying to make my universal remote and spent 45 mins farming Westfall with zero luck. Then I read about the cave in Loch Modan that some posts have mentioned. I got 2 flasks and 1 silver contact in 8 mins. 1 flask off a strider and 1 off a chicken.
For those without coordinates, the cave is in the lower right corner of the map.

The Flasks of Oil were available to loot today from the Harvest Watchers. Two were looted by me from 10 machine corpses with both of the flasks coming on the second "engineering" loot. Interesting that I got them from watchers that were already dead from a questing lowbie. There were two Flasks of Oils available on the horde AH priced at 250g each today (hmmm, I think I'll stick around and do some farming).

As of June 5th 2012, Harvest Watchers (Westfall) do drop the Flask of Oil, Took me 3 hours and reciever 4 flasks.In answer to another question, Engineers get the oil. Not miners, Misleading when the engineer is holding a mining pick when looting the dead Harvesters. But by the time u get a flask of oil, you dont care if ur standing on ur head.

Re: the cave in southern Loch Modan - the proto-striders and battle-chickens BOTH yield Flasks of Oil when your engineer "skins" them. The guy below who said you can't get them from battle-chickens is WRONG. I took my engineer there to farm the oil, and the first creature I got one from was in fact a battle-chicken.

You get them rather rarely. If you are farming for oil it can get pretty frustrating.

I also skinned numerous useful items like silver contact and whirring bronze gizmos. Many decent green items also dropped.

Not sure what's going on with other people, but as of 5.2 these are dropping pretty regularly for me.

Spent about two minutes at most in the cave (southeast Loch Modan) skinning the mechanical birds and got two flasks.

I hear the venture co. overseers in Southern Barrens also drop these, though at a much lower rate.

I decided to make a more recent post, Mainly because of all the conflicting data / information on various sites including here.

25th April : 2013 (GMT Timezone) - (Lives in Uk)

As of 01:07 upto 02:33 (Local Time) i have been farming Harvest Watcher's @ the Westfall Farm and so far i have had 5 Flask's of Oil drop (via engineering them after kill).

I'll check out the Proto-mech birds and Chickens in a day or so.

So, the oil does STILL drop.

I farmed the harvesters in westfall for an hour, killed a few hundred, got none.

I farmed the npc's in the cave in loch modan for another 2 hours, and...nothing.

There is so much disorganized and outdated information here, I couldn’t make heads or tails out of what was what and when was what, so I decided to take the most recent information and go check myself. As of right now, 12:35 AM on 8/4/2013, these are obtained (with a decent drop rate) from the cave in Loch Modan. The coordinates for the cave are roughly 70,75 (as others have stated). Do not go there on a toon that is not an engineer; you will not get any. You have to “de-engineer,” “skin,” “mine,” “tinker,” or whatever you want to call it, but you must be an engineer to “de-engineer” the corpses.

I farmed for approximately 20 minutes and got 4 (for my two engineers). I killed roughly 50-60 mobs, and de-engineered some that were already dead when I got there. No flasks dropped of the ones I did not kill. Not sure if that matters, but it was a very small sample of the total I de-engineered.

Incidentally, I decided to farm one more after writing this, to sell on the AH. There was only one when I checked and it was selling for 500g. If it sells fast, I might farm a little more.

This is my experience for this item as of 5.4

Location: Ironwing Cavern in Loch Modan. Cave entrance at 71.2 -76.6

The cave hosts 12 Proto Strider and 9 Haywire Battle Chicken, also Optimo, a rare Proto Strider.
The mechanical beings that dwell in this cave, re-spawn’s every 4-5 minutes.

After the third re-spawn, I got my first Flask of Oil from Engineering a Proto Strider.
After the sixth re-spawn, I got my second Flask of Oil from Engineering a Proto Strider.

This happened on US Saurfang on November 10, 2013 at 4 am – 4.30 am Server time.
(November 9, 2013 at 9 am – 9.30 am whatever time zone Blizzard belongs too)

I am going to suggest you farm the Fiaschetta di Olio from Guardiano Mietitore NPCs at Saldean's Farm (53,32) in Marche Occidentali. Here's the reasoning behind that;

1. Drop Rates

Firstly, however you decide, this will be a grind because the salvage rate is around 3% at best with no item drops now. This is just the most efficient way to grind the flasks.

At first glance the Guardiano Mietitore does not seem the best drop rate. However, the item no longer drops from them now (post Cataclysm) it is salvaged by Engineers only after looting the corpse. The drop rate is shown as 0.5% which you can ignore.

The salvage rate for Engineers is shown here as 1.1%. The highest rate of 3% is shown from Optimo and Proto-Camminatore, however the sample size is small and I suspect there is little difference between the NPCs it drops from.

2. NPC Spawn Rate & Density

Being a popular location for levelling characters, Saldean's Farm offers fast respawn rates, pretty much instant within the area (due to auto respawn mechanics ensuring plenty for all on the associated quest) even when you are there alone.

This means no time waiting for respawns as in Ironwing Cavern in Loch Modan or elsewhere.

3. Farming Method

With most mobs you kill, loot and the salvage as there is little chance to AOE pull.

However, at Saldean's Farm, the most effective method (assuming you farm on a high level Engineer) is not to loot each kill but to AOE (whichever is your faster kill ability, as a Mage I use Arcane Blast) and continue around the field.

The faster you kill the faster they re-pop. Continue doing circuits for several minutes until you have nice sparkly heaps of Guardiano Mietitore then AOE loot each pile and salvage the corpses. Continue around until they are cleared . Rinse & Repeat.

This will give you the most efficient way to loot for the drop chance from salvaging.

4. Pick a Busy Time.

I chose to farm on a Sunday evening when even now you get a lot of people levelling the quests here. This means a LOT of already dead NPCs' to salvage. Even with some 50% not looted you increase your time salvaging not killing.

It is not essential as they respawn fast anyhow but it does make it go faster still.

Finally my aim was the farm 10 flasks which gave the following:

794 kills (salvaged approx. 1,000 corpses) over about 1 hour 40 minutes.

10 Fiaschetta di Olio (2%)
12 Contatto in Argento (2%)
2 Tubo di Bronzo (>1%)
2 Ingranaggi Rotanti di Bronzo (>1%)
The rest grey items.

MobInfo 2 did not correctly record the rates. The percentages are based on the final results.

You can also sell junk right there to Contadino Saldean to clear bags space.

Finally, to break it up a little I also raised my Level 1 Cucciolo di Fenice battling the Piccolo Falciatore there and got two rare quality pets.

Yay! It does still drop. I was getting worried. I tried Westfall first since it was easiest to get too, but after about 40 minutes of nothing dropping then getting camped by alliance I decided to give Loch a shot. Got an oil on my first run through (about ten kills in). This has to be the only cave I've ever wished was longer to get through.

As of 6.0.2 the drop rate on these (at least from the mechanicals in the cave in Loch Modan) seems to have increased significantly. It is now close to around 50%. When getting the quest there I looted six flasks without having to kill anymore than what was necessary to reach the back of the cave, with no salvaging required.
