Since its from a 5 man , i would like to have this on my warlock in my arena,metamorphosis SL,molten skin,demonic resilience , i think i could go past 60% dmg mitigation.Imagine a 2vs2 , 2 casters with this trinket , use and nuke. just a thought.

This will be a pretty interesting trinket for cloth users in PVP as well, since the high proc chance when hit means it has a very good chance of putting up the buff and mitigating a lot of physical damage. The high stamina on it means you can focus on spellpower rather than stamina gemming for the rest of your PVP gear, effectively making up for not having a spellpower trinket equipped. I'm in no way advocating rolling on it over a tank, but I can definitely see some non tanks snagging it to save it from disenchant.

Is this better than battlemaster's for say, a warlock? I'm not quite sure. You can't use battlemaster's during a stun, whereas this procs automatically and can potentially take off a good chunk of a rogue's initial CS->KS burst on you. I'm expecting to see humans trying it out at least.

On my shaman who has 15k armor with a shield, removing my 7800 armor shield takes my physical mitigation from 51% down to 34%, an effective increase in physical damage taken of 35% total (going from 49% to 66% total damage taken from a hit). I'm too lazy to look at how much of a relative mitigation gain this is for a warlock with demon armor up going from 4-5k armor to 11-12k, but it is undoubtedly a lot.

Would it be any good for tanks to stack Essence and Heart? You'd get a nice 237 stamina plus some nice mitigation procs. =D

To clarify, this trinket (and the other three trinkets) drop in NORMAL mode of Trial of the Champion, not in Heroic mode. Drops from the Final Boss (The Black Knight).

~~You have a 25% chance for this to drop from the boss, it shares the loot table with the other 3 trinkets (similar to the trinket drops from the 3rd boss of H MGT back in BC).~~ (Correction: All 8 items that drop from this boss ALL share a loot table. Since he drops 2 epics, you still have a 25% chance to get this trinket, but there is no guarantee that at least one of the trinkets will drop each time you run it, if you're really lucky two trinkets will drop at the same time)

Overall, after doing a couple of heroics with this equipped, the proc is pretty frequent, and when it does proc, it has the same graphic as if a Paladin used Hand of Protection on you.

This is a brilliant tanking trinket, obviously. The proc happens a lot, and 7k armor is never anything to sneeze at. The stamina is nice as well. The proc looks like a paladin's Blessing of Protection, and the buff looks like Holy Shield.

I don't think it procs off dodged, parried, completely blocked attacks, or ones that miss. Not that it matters, with the huge proc rate. 45 sec internal cd also sounds about right after a quick hVH.

tldr; get this from The Black Knight in regToC

EDIT: With Patch 3.2.2, the odd effect graphic has been changed. It no longer looks like Blessing of Protection has been cast on you. Instead, it appears that you have cast Retribution Aura. The buff effect, however, still looks like the icon for Holy Shield.

This is accurate.

Also, Rabarberskurk, to hit the 5/hr cap, you would have to complete the instance in less than 12 minutes. I believe all of the trinkets drop off of the final boss, The Black Knight. While the fights themselves are pushovers for any halfway-decently equipped group, the NPCs are chatterboxes and inflate the time required to complete the run by several orders of magnitude. This, combined with the fact that mounted combat doesn't scale with level/gear, makes it unlikely for very many groups to hit the 12-minute mark.

That being said, the dungeon remains easy and an excellent source for some amazing drops. Happy hunting!

In order to quantify what "procs a lot" actually is, i ran a short test on the mobs at Kartak Hold.
I had 4/5 mobs beating on me from the back (so i didn't block/dodge/parry any hit) so that the changes of the trinket proc'ing after the ICD was up would be higher.
I wrapped it up after 10 procs.

The sample size is small, but appers to point to a 50s ICD. This averages out to 1411.2 armor over the course of any fight if it always procs on it's ICD (1176 armor if it procs every 60s, which is more realistic in a single mob scenario).

Stacking stam isn't a good choice for most bosses in Ulduar. For General Vezax your 155/162 stam trinkets aren't going to do @#$% when the boss can hit for 30k. Using dodge or parry trinkets are MUCH better for most fights in Ulduar.

Assuming you have reasonablish avoidance/mitigation to start with, on a slot like a trinket especially, the more HP you can get, the better the logic of why, is simple.

You take a 20k hit from your 35-40k health pool, you NEED to be healed before the next hit.
You take a 20k hit from your 40-45k health pool, you will still (probably) be alive to be healed for a third hit.
Atop of that, every additional point of HP you have over a second or third hit killing blow is 'extra HP' that doesn't need to be healed up for the time of the fourth hit.

EHP is, always has been, and with current game design/philosophy and progression, always will be, absolute king for progress/hard hitting content.

And avoidance does nothing if you get chain hit through avoidance. More health does.

You should also think about this being a pre-Raid instance (it's a 5 man...), you most likely won't be using many items from this instance as a upgrade if you're already on General Vezax.

I'm not saying this is as good as the trinkets from Ulduar. But the proc is awesome and the stamina isn't bad. I haven't seen a stamina trinket drop in Ulduar yet, so this is by far better then Essence of Gossamer or Valor Medal of the First War. The trinkets from Naxx10/25 really isn't worth using.

Armor proc/trinkets are actually better now with the inspiration/fortitude change. Before you would only see a 3-4% mitigation increase with inspiration already up and this triggering, now you're looking at a 5-7% increase, depending on your base armor.

Before raid buffs, using devotion aura, this proc takes me from 26, 388 armour (63.4 physical redux) to 33,444 (68.71 redux,) so personally its a 5+% reduction of physical damage which is incredible considering the stamina and high proc rate also.

63.4% reduction to 68.71% is a ~8.5% reduction in damage taken. From a 10k hit, you would take ~3,660 before the proc, and after the proc you would only be hit for around 3,129. Combined with Ardent Defender, this baby will allow me to take an extra hit from XT hard mode without heals when it procs, which will be nice as we bring the raid back to 2 healers.

Also, in these days of PuG'ing raids, the ~1500hp you gain from this trinket will help your chances of getting a raid spot. Even Naxx raids these days won't take a tank with less than 28k unbuffed, and this plus a Gossamer is the difference many PuG tanks will need to push them over the acceptable threshold.

As a healer and a tank, I can safely say that healing a tank with 65% avoidance that can die in 3 hits if he gets unlucky is FAR harder than healing a tank with 40% avoidance but can eat 5-6 hits before biting the bullet. Avoidance is very nice, and a lucky avoidance streak will let you survive even the hardest enrages if your healers fall asleep, but you can't rely on them. HP and Armor is called EH, for Effective Health, and its how much you can lose without heals, and for progression (both cutting edge raiding, and simply taking on Heroics/Naxx if you have low gear by comparison) it is very important to prevent unlucky spikes instagibbing tanks.

I take a nice balance of EH and avoidance, and sit on about 57% avoidance raid buffed with 43k hp. If I avoid 6 hits in a row, I still have a Holy Pally spamming FoL on me continuously because if he stops, and I take some hits without avoiding any, we're in trouble.

Kind of torn on this. My primary tanking trinkets tend are Heart of Iron and Royal Seal of King Llane, but I'm wondering if the armor proc is worth it for the loss of 29 stam. At even 25 percent up time (well, a little less if its 10 seconds almost every 45 seconds) it'd be worth it I think to mitigate damage. However, on the other hand, the Llane's trinket is a use for avoidance that lets you control it for "oh crap" moments.

Any thoughts?

It took me about 20 or so runs to get this to drop yesterday. I think I saw every piece that can drop in Regular ToC before I finally got this. I was chain running this with PuGs, and every time someone would say, "I saw that drop about 5-8 times yesterday!" But I was just unlucky.

This finally replaced my Monarch Crab. Yes it has 39 less stamina because of the two Solid Dragon's Eyes, but those can be placed elsewhere.

After all was said and done and re-gemmed, I ended up being +20-30 stam overall. Very well worth the farming.

I am a paladin tank with around 24000 armour, which gives me 61% physical damage reduction. When this trinket procs its gives me 67% physical damage reduction. Pretty damn nice.

With Armed to the Teeth, 7K armor will yield warriors nearly 200 AP (195 to be precise).

As per my testings, the added Armor converted immediately into AP increase.

This trinket is especially excellent for bosses that require tank-switching, such as Thorim, because the internal CD of the proc will usually be finished by the time you need to taunt. Thanks to the high proc rate, you then have a very good chance of getting the armor buff quickly after you taunt, which is right when it's usually the most helpful, as the healers are switching targets.

the stamina may be amazing, the armor may go directly to your butt to keep it from being kicked but the first day (and im gunna go out on a limb and say FOREVER) You will think someone or somthing, quite possibly even yourself with a slip of the finger, used HoP on you!

No matter how much health or avoidance you have, it's always possible to die. You don't have to tell tanks that, they're very much aware =)

Avoidance and stamina are both good but for different reasons. Avoidance makes a bigger difference in the long term. Unless your avoidance is 100% it's possible that three consecutive attacks will hit you (that's where stamina comes in handy). To see the benefit you have to consider more than three attacks. Over the course of a fight you can be attacked hundreds of times and an increase in avoidance means that less of those attacks will land. The fewer attacks that land, the less damage you take, the less healing you require.

No tank gets two trinkets and says, "well, those are the only trinkets I'll ever need." Trinkets are very situational. For some fights this is a good trinket to have, for others it isn't. This trinket isn't superior to avoidance trinkets (like this one), it's just different. Get both.

This trinket is great for PvProt warriors. Whenever this procs, you can safely use Spell Reflect without anyone noticing. The Hand of Protection symbol is large enough to almost fully cover up the Spell Reflect symbol.

Edit: 3.2.2 will change the proc animation in a way that it does not resemble Hand of Protection any more. I will see if I can post a screenshot of the new animation soon.

As a tank sice vanilla, I was keen to get this trinket to replace my Gossamer (or whatever its called), and had been farming TotC normal on and off since the launch of 3.2.

It finally dropped last night (with me tanking ofc), but the healer needed too and I lost the roll :( He even refused to trade it to me and immediately left the group.

To all non-tanks who want this trinket... Don't be a selfish idiot. If the tank needs it let them have it. If they don't, then by all means roll. If you duel spec tank like Darkmon claimed, then tank the instance (not heal or DPS it) if you want this trinket!

Anger now vented. Back to doing more TotC runs! Yawn.

Update: Grouped with some people last night for TotC normal (with me tanking). Explained I was only after the trinket (and also explained my ninja looting experience of the night before). Everyone agreed they would not roll if it dropped. It dropped! Death Knight (DPS) in group rolled Need. Won the roll and left the group! I ran the instance 10 more times that night. Trinket never dropped!

Oh well. I guess I'll try again tonight (cry)! Maybe I'll be Master Looter this time!

Update: Grouped with 3 paladins and a shaman last night with me tanking. Kept my fingers crossed the trinket would drop and the others would not roll need! It dropped on first run and everybody considered it was primarily tank loot and did not need. I'd like to thank the group for passing and not being complete %^&*s.

As an affliction lock in pvp with 26k health (o_O), this trinket works especially well against rogues, proccing right after they open up on me, mitigating much of the damage. Also useful against melee classes in general, which locks have trouble against.

This is an amazing trinket for a Discipline Priest. If you're glyphed for Inner Fire, when this thing procs it will give you at least 14,000 armor. Combine that with Pain Suppression and you will be very hard to burst down, even by several people.

This is one of the best tanking trinkets in the game, and the ilvl 200 doesn't do it justice. It offers a passive (proc-based) armor boost (7k armor is roughly a quarter of the total armor I have as frost DK tank) plus a stam boost similar to the one given by heroic mode chest or leg drops. Allmost every tank on my realm (Executus EU) has this one.

The only problem seems to be the actual drop rate, i've farmed it for allmost 3 weeks and never seen it drop until I got it, and in all this time I've seen the other trinket, Banner of Victory, only drop once, while the other items the Black Knight drops were flying like crazy. So I suspect that these two trinkets do indeed have a slightly lower drop chance than the other items on the drop table.

It's a must-have for any tank, especially druids (in case the armor bonus from proc is affected by the bear form multiplyer - please confirm, is it?).

I notice many people have recorded high proc rates on this trinket. Before reading the comments I was under the impression it proc'd only about 6% of the time based on the uptime % of "Aegis" as recorded via WowWebStats.

Did the proc rate get nerfed at some point, or is uptime a misleading calculation...? The only way I can see uptime being misleading is if WowWebStats factors a player's entire "presence" in the raid as part of the calculation for % uptime, vs actual time in combat... however, I can't imagine they would overlook something as obvious as that. Any input would be much appreciated as this will affect my trinket choices! :D

Update 12/6/09: Still recording between 4 and 6% uptime on Aegis. One thing to keep in mind is that the better your gear gets (more specifically, the more avoidance you acquire), the less hits you will be taking, and thus, more time waiting for this thing to proc.

I have the skeletal key, Satrina's impending scarab, and Purified onyxia blood talisman all 245++ and I still find myself using this a lot, only time i stack the scarab and key is when i know there is a lot of casters, otherwise this really beats the scarab in effective health, mix it with onyxia blood talisman for a full our physical dmg fight like Deathbringer surfang and it really rocks.

Also if your revered with ashen verdict, even tho the ring hardly ever procs when it does and this is up i have ~75% armor reduction as a paladin.

Saw this trinket drop as I tanked through normal, I was happy for a second before 2 dps and our healer also rolled for it without saying a word, dps ended up winning it and immediately leaving the group. There is no honor it seems when it comes to this trinket, if you really want it dont run this dungeon with pugs.

I finally was able to obtain this trinket on lucky run #13. I had not seen it prior to this, saw everything else, BoV about 5 times (never took it tanking). Please if you want this trinket, tank the instance. Please do not go in as a dps and need on the trinket. Build up your DPS gear to a respectable level, then if you want to tank - work on the pieces from there.

I have Run this at least 25 times, and its dropped twice. the First time i was in my dps gear and the tank and i agreed to just roll off and see who wins. When it dropped, THE RESTO SHAMAN, without explanation, needs it, wins, and leaves group. the time afterward i lost it to feral dps, but he was the tank in the first place but he had really low health so i took over.

I ran reg ToC about 8 times tonight on my DK tank, and saw 5 drops! I tanked every run and lost every Black Heart drop to either a dps or a healer, twice to hunters. I'm not mad, though. I've changed my policy on rolling... if I might possibly use something in the future, I'll roll on it. I'm also done tanking this instance, lol.

I'll try again tomorrow. This trinket is too awesome not to have, the ilvl sucks but who cares?

12/05/2010- I've ran N ToC about 27 times in three days and it's never dropped for me. the 16% is complete BS. both Leggings of the Bloodless Knight and Girdle of Arrogant Downfall have the same drop rate and have lower drop counts than The Black Heart, but for some reason I've seen those two drop 5 times by now.

If you consider farming this for your freshly dinged tank-class, get ready for a long farm. Not only is it a low drop percentage, the queues seems to be quite high on most battlegroups. And your biggest enemy while farming this: Leechers who queue as DPS only to need on tank-items. Pathetic, but true. ToC normal has probably the most of these nutjobs who are too lazy to farm gear to tank so they just steal items in front of tanks instead.

I still use this trinket along with Corroded Skeleton Key while raiding ICC, and The Black Heart is godly for heavy physical damage fights like Festergut. My Prot Warrior has 30,337 Armor (66.57% Physical Damage Mitigation), and when The Black Heart procs, he goes up to 37,393 Armor (71.05% Physical Damage Mitigation), so the proc gives me 4.48% Physical Damage Reduction. That combined with the +Stamina on it, makes it have extremely high EH. It's a pity they keep coming out with crappy -35% Health Proc Tank Trinkets instead of making a ILvl 264+ version of The Black Heart.

I'll have to say, good luck getting this trinket.

1st of all: Just about anyone can roll need on this, so be wary if your a tank farming this, be prepared to get ninjad.

You maybe might lose to a hunter, or even a priest, yep a priest :)

it's a much ninja'd item because:

It's a low drop rate
and everyone can need on it.

Whats ironic is i've seen people say "Yeah i've been ninja'd from this item alot of times too" when they ninja it.

in my opinion loot rule should go like this.

Main spec: Rolls need gets first priority.
Off-spec rolls need, gets next priority
No one needs, greed/disenchant.

Anyways, if you want to get the trinket more smoother;

1. Dont run with any plate wearers, usally their the ones who ninja the item the most.

2. Run with your guildies so you firmly can get the trinket if it drops.

3. Explain that you need the trinket in the dungeon, and maybe the other dps will be generous and let you have it.

4. I doubt number 3 will happen.

5. ?

But anyways yeah. tanks be careful out there.

You know, I had gotten rid of this after I upgraded my trinkets; I regret it now since the bonus stamina can come in handy as others mentioned in some damage-intensive fights in ICC. I recently picked up the Essence of Gossamer from Heroic Azjol-Nerub again during a guild daily heroic, and I'm going to keep it now just in case I need the extra stam. My usual trinkets are the Corroded Skeleton Key and the Corpse Tongue Coin, but I figure if I need extra health for some fights (Festergut and Putricide come to mind) I'll swap out CTC for EoG (I don't have the patience to try and farm the BH again, and I'd feel bad anyways taking it from a new tank who needs it more than a 5.7K GS tank).

This is a really nice trinket.
I'm a Moonkin and I use it for PvP. The stamina boost is useful and melees have a harder time getting through to me when it procs. And no, I did not ninja it :P

Had a dps DK whine when I needed this, arguing that I was better geared than him. I told him, "by all means roll, and I will congratulate you if you win - but hey, at least I am tanking for it."

I won the roll, he whined some more, and I left with a sigh. Some people just don't get it.

I'm not going to lie. As an ICC geared and experienced tank, I know how much stacking stam can be helpful in ICC for fester, rot. So, I recently farmed this and dropped the Ony Head trinket for it. Didnt truly need the def or parry off that thing anyway, and since i got this in conjuction with Corroded Skeleton Key, i have 45k unbuffed. best decision i think i EVER made. I enjoy being the highest HP tank in ICC. That 30% buff in there is amazing-with only that buff i have 58k health. average of 70k with full raid buffs.
This thing is easy to get, AND it WILL last you through ICC until you get that one trinket off 10man putricide, which gives a stacking stam buff up to 240 stam when u get hit.

Plus, DO NOT forget the proc. i go from 66% to 71% phsysical damage reduction when it procs. it doesnt seem like much but to the healers of festergut with 3 stacks of blight, its a huge reduction.

Had a scare and a relief from this trinket...
I am a Druid Bear Tank and I ran this dungeon about 15 times to get this trinket, was getting sick of the place so much I was considering leaving.
When the trinket dropped a DK in the group rolled need on it and won it, when I complained, he actually said "Oh, sorry, I did not know you needed it, I just wanted it for tank spec" and gave it to me. It was probably the most mature thing I've ever seen a pug DPS do.

This trinket is very very good for Druids because it's got 2 out of our only 3 mitigations, and in large numbers. The stamina is, lets be honest, a heck of a lot for a pre-raid ilvl 200 trinket, and the armor proc is one of the only ways druids can mitigate physical damage.

If only it had dodge on it as well, I'd be convinced it was itemized solely for Bear Druids. Anyway, make sure you get one, druid tanks, especially if you are recently 80. I've seen lots of druids with 90% 245 and 251 gears but still rockin' this trinket.

This trinket epitomizes why Blizzard's loot system in LFD should be changed so ONLY tanks can roll need on tanking gear. So many poor tanks are bound to farming Reg ToC because of DPS that win TBH over them.

Ran regular ToC 10x and this is what I've seen drop so far:
1.Tears of the Vanquished:4x out of 10.
2.Uruka's Band of Zeal :3x out of 10.
3.Handwraps of Surrendered Hope:3x out of 10.
4 Mantle of Inconsolable Fear:3x out of 10.
5.Drape of the undefeated:1x out of 10x.
6.Shoulderpads of the Infamous Knave:1x out of 10.
7.Girdle of the Pallid Knight:1x out of 10.
8.Helm of the Violent Fray:1x out of 10.
9.The Black Heart:0x out of 10
10.Abyssal Rune:0x out of 10
11.Belt of Merciless cruelty:0x out of 10
12.Girdle of Arrogant Downfall:0x out of 10
13.Leggings of the Bloodless Knight:0x out of 10
14.There were 3 more items that dropped but they were the same as that which already dropped.
Not to mention that queing regular Trial of Champion takes ridiculously long now even as Tank thanks to Cata. Not to mention I just entered one and the Healer bailed mid fight so then I bailed and now I'm hit with the dungeon deserter thing and cannot reque for 30 minutes. Not to mention the fact that it is also not allowing me to que for Bgs. So its glitched so now I have to logout and back in to que for Bgs. Not to mention that when it does finally drop I'll be rolling against ^&*!heads who have Tank as their offspec trying to roll on it over my main spec. Thx Blizz.

This trinket has escaped the Great Armor Trinket Purge of Patch 4.0.6.

While trinkets with passive armor bonuses had their armor cut to around a quarter of their previous armor, the Black Heart's armor proc still comes out fairly insane.

Definitely best in slot now for Herald of the Titans tanks.

I am still using this as a trinket at 85, it may be vastly behind on stamina, but considering the 7k armor which scales to be much more beneificial than most 85 trinkets this thing is still on par

Although perhaps already stated, in the case of my Protection level 80 Warrior (as of Pandaria) this trinket grants approximately 14.5% physical damage reduction, on proc (this is calculated by my own stats and crunched numbers, I might have passive effects that increase that armor bonus more but I am unsure). Given I'm already at 68.5% physical damage reduction, this is a whammy; it brings me up to a total 83% physical damage reduction, which is great for solo boss fights, when Second Wind won't cut it and Victory Rush is unavailable mid-fight. This is definetly useful for situations where you already have a healer (I.E. a dungeon), you won't need a trinket on like Swift Hand of Justice (with the exception of bosses that include adds spawning that grant use of Victory Rush). In cases in which you are soloing tough boss fights, and no adds spawn, definetly use this trinket. If you are soloing multiple easy mobs or a pack of NPCs and a boss, I'd go with a trinket that causes a heal upon the killing blow of the adds. In any case, this is definetly worth-while for dungeoners in need of a significant armor increase, or the casual quester.

Over 40 runs and it still hasn't dropped. That 2.48% drop chance is no joke.
