Defintely not as good as royal nightseye, but it is much much cheaper. I'd use this on my priest to fill in gear that I don't think I'll have long enough to warranty using more expensive gems in. I'd say this compares well to royal shadow dreanite, maybe a bit better.

If you are Aldor you may train this from the Master Jeweler in Shattrah
If you arent then you must go to Stormspire in Netherstorm to Jazdalaad with Neutral consortium rep. which you can easily attain.
Those are the ONLY trainers you can train this pattern from

This is a godsend for those Jewelcrafters on sparsely populated servers waiting for a rare recipe to drop so they can get up to 365 (where they can use the recipes that can be bought if their rep is high enough with certain factions).

For a properly geared and played raid healing Druid, this gem can be better than the Royal Nightseye. Consider the following:

15% increase to Spirit from talents
10% increase to stats from Kings in raid
15% mana regen during FSR from talents
Blue Dragon card proc
Bangle trinket procs give 15% mana regen in FSR
Primal Mooncloth set bonus
Innervate twice during 10 minute boss fight.
Average 80% time in FSR, 20% outside, should be easy for most people.

edit: Forgot to mention the Priest's Improved Divine Spirit buff which gives an added spell damage and healing based on spirit for the player.

I'm not saying spirit doesnt matter, but by stacking spirit your're gimping your regen and gaining a minimal bonus to your +healing. Resist Auras, imps and devo aura has precedence over Tree. Because of that and because the majority of the fights in ssc require multiple tanks we generally don't get in the MT group. and in the few fights we do, the small amount of +healing you get from 6 shadow pearls won't make a difference, but the 12 mp5 you would gain IS significant. Spirit is good, and a balance between it and mp5 is important, but 2mp>>>4 spirit.

If you just straight compare spirit to mp5 then yes, obviously mp5 is better for regenerating mana. However, if you use innervate every 6 minutes then the gap gets significantly smaller. If you can get 2 innervates every 6m, then spirit comes out ahead for the same item budget. (Even when you consider 100% of time spent in 5s rule.) If you run with ferals (who doesnt?) then just get them to throw the love your way and stack spirit ftw. Not to mention it helps your ToL aura.

Spirit IS important for a resto druid, but so is mp5. 4 spirit only accounts to 50 mana more from an innervate which is approximately .7mp5 if you do the math. If you gear for mp5, and you use mana pots then you can free up innervates for those who need them. Spirit is important, but 4 is so little compared to 2mp5 that it makes this gem seem terrible in comparison to Royal Nightseye. It would take at least double the spirit for this gem to be even remotely comparable.

the same gem can be purchased for 40 apexis shards during the skygaurd event (every 2 hours on even hours) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32636, so if you have alot of apexis shards and are near broke...

The only issue with mp5 being better than spirit when talking about druids is that mp5 does nothing for ToL or other spirit based talents. If you are in the mp5 rule as a druid all of the time then you are probably over healing like crazy as well. Add all this to the changes to intensity in the 2.3 and spirit easily out does Mp5.

In 2.3 all mana regeneration talents are getting a buff from 15%-30% mana regeneration while casting.

If you are in the FSR 85% of the time or less, 4spirit will now equal 1 mp5 (previously it was around 6 spirit). 65% of the time or less, 3 spirit will equal 1 mp5 (previously around 3.5 spirit)

With the +to healing from spirit in spec (for at least priests), the two gems (this and royal nightseye) would be (If you are in the fsr 85% of the time, which is manageable).

+9 healing/2mp5
+10healing/1mp5

Possibly not quite enough of an upgrade to make the switch. But, If you use Bangle of Endless Blessings, or Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon, the extra spirit can increase not only your +healing, but also +mp5.

Its something to think about next time you are buying gems.

Edit: Since 2.4 the amount of regen you gain from spirit is also affected by your intellect. The equation is along the lines of

5 * ~.0097 * spirit * square_root(intellect)

Effectivley, the amount of regen you gain has just about doubled, not to mention the mp5.

For Priests and Druids, there should be no reason why you should get the +2mp5 version of this gem anymore, this gem is far and above better.

I believe this gem will be the new replacement for the Royal Nightseye. I replaced all of my PMC Luminous Noble Topaz with those Royal Nightseye due to more healing in +5 minute fights. I am now looking to go back with Luminous Noble Topaz for the yellow sockets and using this in the red & blue sockets minus the Teardrop Living Ruby that are already there.

the best thing about about spirit these days is that it scales with gear and raid buffs

2 mana per 5 will always stay 2 mana per 5, while 4 spirit will increase with arcane brilliance and blessing of kings
