This is a reference to the wooden ring given to Kvothe by Auri in Patric Rothfuss' novel The Name of the Wind.
The descriptions match:

“I brought you a ring.”
It was made of warm, smooth wood. “What does it do?” I asked.
“It keeps secrets,” she said.

"A simple, smooth ring carved from heartwood. It is strangely warm to the touch."

Other fun parallels:
They exchange gifts in the evenings when they meet.
Kvothe's gift to her that evening was a narrow bottle containing honey wine.
In the quest, you are turning in a Phial of Nightwell Energy.

Ari talks the same way Auri does. She refers to inanimate objects as if they are people (personification).
Ari talking about the book you are trying to find:
"...but it does not want to be found. It is old and angry and thirsts for power. We will have to convince it to emerge from hiding in the proper way. Perhaps if you bring it a gift..."

Kvothe talking to Auri in A Wise Man's Fear:
“What did you bring me?” I countered.
She grinned. “I have an apple that thinks it is a pear,” she said, holding it up.
“And a bun that thinks it is a cat. And a lettuce that thinks it is a lettuce.”
