You might as well say that no change whatsoever will ever occur. The pro-life crowd are just as passionate and have just as much support as the pro-gay-marriage crowd (i.e. significant numbers, but not enough for a majority consensus), but that's not exactly reducing the impetus for gay marriage change.Oh I know, but honestly, even if the current Republican candidate does get in, I somehow doubt you'll see abortions outlawed, since there is more then enough opposition there to hold it off.
As for backward steps, the US has
shown itself to be remarkably capable
of doing exactly that.
Aye I know I know, but come on, I can at least hope for humanity to rise up and leave human choice as a free action.

Yes, but if the counterargument is "for humanity to rise up and leave human life as an inviolable priority", then murder, manslaughter laws would suggest that "human life > human choice". All boils back down to that.

All depends on your view point in regards to the fetus in that case. That being said, I don't believe that human choice is greater then murder/manslaughter, I just don't consider abortion before weeks 20-23 killing a human being.

Why that line though? It's highly arbitrary. What makes up a person - cognitive function, neural pathways, heart beat, soul? According to what someone posted before, the fetus has a closed bloodstream within 3 weeks of conception. That's a pretty significant sign of life, no?

/shrug That's not up to me Squish. Apparently the doctors and scientists who figured that out don't believe so.
And if you mention Soul; I've always been under the impression the soul doesn't enter our body till we take our first actual breath on our own, and the fetus shares air with the mother.

Very subjective, but just to contrast, the Japanese have rituals to
apologise to aborted babies
, suggesting that they believe very differently.

As for states making it criminal to procure an abortion... Republicans have tried to go further than
that

In the context of taking another person's life, it's just as relevant as investigating a suspicious suicide to see if there was a murderer behind it. It might not be a particularly appealing thought, but if it's understood that a fetus is a human life, and taking a human life was illegal, then a miscarriage occurring around suspicious events may well be worth investigating, just like the suicide.
(Note - this isn't to say that I support that - again, I'd like to make it clear that I'm pro-choice... but in the context of a Republican platform of pro-life on this topic, it stands to reason.)

Um...no kidding? Since most Shinto religions believe that every single in the universe is a solid part of God, and everything has a piece of God within them. So yes Squish, souls can be subjective too.

Could be, but I doubt the Americans are going to start a new civil war over a presidential election.

It may not be as over the top as you think though.
America's economy is at a tipping point here. If it gets much worse, and something drastic happens, like default on world debt, or collapse of the stock market, and couple that with unemployment / underemployment reaching 20-25%, it is possible that you could see a full-blown revolt.
The problem (or possibly a good thing), is there is no "Mason-Dixon Line" today. Its not a North v. South thing. Its not even a rich v. poor (regardless of what Occupy idiots want to make it seem like)...its the survival of our society as we know it.
So I don't see a "Civil War" scenario, but I could see massive protests and violence. I could even see some states decide to ignore federal law or mandates, and try to recover their economies on their own.

Our grandparents made it through the great depression I would like to think our generation could do the same.

I'm not really sure we can compare our generation to our grandparents'. Was our grandparents' generation better? I couldn't tell you.
Are they different? Very much so.

I agree, all I am saying is in our very recent past our society made it through incredibly difficult economic times without tearing the country apart, and I think we would too.

Thought this was interesting after our debate on rape, abortion, etc.

Disgusting; sadly though, that's the way a lot of really despicable minds work. If a child is conceived through rape(be it stranger or domestic((yes wives can still be raped by their husbands))), the so-called father shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the victim or the child and should be arrested for that.
