Hello & welcome once again to the "Topic of the Week!" I've been watching the chat rooms in the free time this week & there is one trend which never seems to die down: creating characters. So, that's our new discussion this week, read on!
Rolling a toon. Rerolling. It's all the same, making "alts." An alt, short for alternate character, is a great way for players to experience the other classes or races (for whatever reason). Perhaps one is new to the game & curious or perhaps one has been playing that priest for so long they feel it's time for a change. Whatever the reason, almost all of us have at least one other avatar.
But what makes multiple characters so fun, so addictive? It could be the thrill of "starting fresh," or seeing the game from an entirely different perspective. In our earlier example I mentioned a priest who had been playing the same character for a long time. This person was real, and after having raided a lot pre-The Burning Crusade expansion, he wanted something
different
. He wanted to play the game from a tank's perspective, at the front of battle -- protecting his group from the various monstrosities which frequent Azeroth. As one may imagine, going from "healer at the back" to "meatshield at the front" was quite a change.
So, what is your "main" character & do you have an alt?
What made you decide to create another avatar?
What's your favorite character? Why?
Let's hear all about why
you
think we're just so in love with our alts.

I made my priest when the game came out back on November 23, 2004. Back then, all of the talent trees were horrendous and no one knew what they were really meant for, and as a consequence to that, it took a ridiculously long time to get to 60. In that time I played a warrior and a rogue to some extent. Even now, those three characters (along with a paladin on a different server) are my highest leveled characters I've played in wow.
Even though I played them a great amount, to this day, whenever I'm out doing anything, from grinding out daily quests to dpsing or healing for an instance or raid, I find myself extremely content with my knowledge and experience with the priest class. I still play my warrior some, but I feel I have so much yet to be done for my priest.
As for the future, I have only but a modicum of interest in making a death knight. I'm still eager to see what Blizzard has in store for my class, as I plan to be one of the first to the next level cap with my priest, as I was on Sargeras when the Burning Crusade was released.

Started with a druid on my friend’s account, and since I liked bear form and tanking, made a warrior. Loved and hated every second of playing it. Tanking was a challenge, but not sure if it was worth it, and soloing was not imaginative at all. Not only that warrior is most gear dependant, he is also most environment dependant (both player and world environment).
So, while playing warrior, I needed some “rest” from that class, so I started a hunter since I liked idea of pet. Had a silly “guilt feeling” since it was much easier to solo, but had nice time doing instances. Although a lot of soloing was sometimes boringly easy, there was enough of situations that gave me much more thoughts on tactic than my warrior ever did - while soloing of course. Also liked PvP aspect of it, so I’ll leave it at 69 level for BGs.
And after trying shaman (57 level), I started a rogue – and never looked back.
The work/play ratio is by far the best I’ve had.
Stealth removes need to “grind your way”, at level 30 soloing RFK boss of 27 level for a very useful loot (not to mention the fun of it), at 40 making your way into SM Cathedral, and pulling it all (
screen
and those
legs
are from RFK
boss
I mentioned), so the fun starts incredibly early. It takes one button to make PvP server into PvE one. I can get a group for instances fairly easy, since I offer Sap for CC and lockpicking is always at max, and since I played tank, I understand game good enough to give useful advices and to be more polite than the rest of the group (tanking wastes nerves, so it isn’t easy to be polite with ninja pulls and all).
So, what is your "main" character & do you have an alt?
My main used to be a warrior, but a rogue now.
What made you decide to create another avatar?
Wanted to try the game from different perspective, and think it’s one of the best things to do in game – discover it from the perspective of different classes.
What's your favorite character? Why?
Rogue, for the reasons I stated above.

Rerolling might come from pen & paper RPG games, where you had to reroll the dices when creating a new character.
My first character was a warlock on the horde side, created when the game came out. However i switched to another server when it was lvl 15 because of friends, and created a NE druid. I levelled up to ~35, made a WoW break and came back to it 3-4 months later, ending up at 60 at the end of the year (yeah, i did take my time :) ).
In the meantime i had already created a warlock on the same server to unwind and see new things. That one only became level 60 shortly before BC came out, ie one year after the first.
Another alt is a warrior i started on another because queues on my main realm where horrible at a point (1h waiting time FTL), and which i levelled to around 25 before the queue problem subsided somewhat and i returned on my mains. I migrated it on my main server after some time and it's now lvl 40.
I'm very happy with my main because it allows me to experience the game in a lot of different ways. My main activity is PvE, i'm usually dps (balance) but often spec resto if we lack a healer, or OT some mobs in quests/raids. For real tanking, i do have a friend with a feral druid that i sometimes use to tank karazhan or ZA (also did Alar once) if we're lacking a tank.
This requires gear and some respec money, but i really like how it changes the view of a fight depending on what spec i'm using, makes things fresher when raiding the same instances for the Nth time. This also makes it my favourite character : i know i will keep seeing new things with it and that i'll be able to esperience at least both dps and heal aspects for each fight.
The reason i started alts was to experience different things and learn how other classes work (although playing a druid already gave lots of knowledge on casting, healing, rage and energy). My warlock is 70 (took me only 6 months after BC came out) and mainly does KZ or instances, but also tanked Leotheras (due to one of the main locks leaving and me being the only one having prepared a FR set).
Another reason was to experience the other starting locations and quests : i also created a chaman alt in order to discover the Azuremyst quests, i dinged ~23 and never went further than that.
The rest (1 alt per class, most being lvl 10-15) is mostly never played or only when i'm really really bored of something. (or if my mains are specced resto and Leotheras and i'm too lazy to respec them properly to do stuff with them)

I generally refrain from answering questions or presenting any deviations on the
TOTW
, but here's an answer to a question posed earlier:
Source: WoWwiki
Toon: A light-hearted word referring to the iconic representation of a user. It originates from cartoons, where the a cartoon character is sometimes referred as a
toon
.

My main character is an undead female rogue.
I also have a 54 alli warrior, on the same server, which I rolled because I was interested to play wow from a different perspective. Having played both horde and alliance I can categorically say I much prefer horde. I prefer the chat on horde and, from my experience, there are a lot more immature people on alliance.
Then, again to get a different prespective of wow, I also have a 49 twink undead rogue on a PVP server.
I love my two rogues, but they are quite different playing styles. My PVE is hemo swords, while my PVP is CHShS - which I guess doesn't seem all that different but believe me it is! Also can get quite confusing seeing as they both have basically the same looks!
My favourite class is rogue - I have tried rolling other classes but never got very far with them. I love that I can choose my moments and generally mess around with mobs and other players. Playing a rogue feels naughty!!

So, what is your "main" character & do you have an alt?
My friend turned me to WoW, and I was having trouble picking a character. Finally I decided a rogue, and stuck with it. Slowly leveled it to 70, doing lots of quests, running few instances, the basics. Once I reached 70, started gearing, and entered Karahzan. We didn't have much luck downing many bosses, but it was fun. I took a break from the rogue, and wanted to try some ranged DPS, so I rolled a hunter. It was quick leveling, and a lot of fun to play once at 70. I started doing BGs mostly and some instances here and there. I think he's only seen very few KZs. I one point I was playing both my hunter and rogue on and off. Recently my paladin hit 70, and I made him holy until I get the gear for prot. He's a lot fun, also a different perspective on the game.
My Rogue has come a long way from KZ, he's currently in BT with a few real life friends, and we're making good progress. I am really excited about progressing in end game. It's been the one thing I've been looking forward for my rogue. As for my hunter, he's still BGing and doing heroics. I also have a few other 30s and 40s which I play very rarely, due to the lack of time. I would like to get at least one more character to 70, but I doubt I will; the paladin leveling worn me out. LoL.
What's your favorite character? Why?
My favorite character would definitely have to be my rogue. It's a lot of fun to play, and I never get bored. I could gank / raid / heroics all day/night long. It's what rogues were made for; being hard DPSers and nasty gankers. :)
Power to the Rogues :)

So, what is your "main" character & do you have an alt?
My main character is a 70 Draenei Holy Paladin. Xaratherus started life as a very mixed-up spec, with points in Ret, Prot, and Holy up through his late teens. At that point I realized I was on the path to gimping myself in mid-level content and respecced to Prot, and a Tankadin I remained through level 60. I have 3 roommates, all of whom play WoW on our server, and at that time we didn't have a dedicated healer - so at 60 I respecced to Holy, and outside of a few "tank flings" I haven't looked back.
What made you decide to create another avatar?
My alt, Quisling, is a 43 Night Elf Rogue. I tend to enjoy trying out all the classes - in fact, I have one of every class on my current server, and I'll have to choose which one to lose when Death Knights come out :( - and Quis had been around since a few months after I created my Paladin. I enjoy having a character that can pump out the DPS when I feel the need to go wreak havoc, and while Xara can herd grind like a pro, there's something terribly satisfying about going "Stabby stabby poke!" on something and watching it die in two shots.
What's your favorite character? Why?
I would have to say that Xaratherus is my favorite character. I've put more time into building him up, both from a role-playing perspective and a gear/mechanics view, than any of my other characters. That doesn't mean Xara will indefintely remain my favorite (although I don't expect things to change anytime soon), but for now he's definitely my "main".

So, what is your "main" character & do you have an alt?
My main is a Dwarf Hunter but as of now it will probably become my alt as I am leveling a Rogue and he's at level 65 as we speak.
What made you decide to create another avatar?
I always enjoyed fighting a rogue in PvP. Sometimes they would &*!@ me off so I decided to make one so I can learn about about how they think. I also wanted to see the "Horde" side of the world and so far I'm enjoying it.
My next alt will probably be a paladin or a druid.
What's your favorite character? Why?
So far I'm enjoying the Rogue character because I like having control of my fights. When to start it and when to end it.
