Combat Swords Rogue Leveling Guide & Best Leveling Talent Build 1-60 - WoW Classic

By Rokman Updated: 2024/11/20

most recommended leveling spec for Rogues is Combat SwordsCombat RogueBest Leveling Talents as Combat Swords Rogue in Classic WoW

Combat Swords is great for beginners. Melee classes can be often misunderstood, especially Rogues. Because Rogues wear leather (which is less armor than plate) and will often times be solo tanking monsters out in the world while questing, Rogues have to rely on defensive cooldowns such as Gouge, Evasion, Blind, or even Vanish. This build is designed to give the Rogue another option, powerful offensive cooldowns and approach fighting with a "strong offense is a good defense" mentality. When most Rogues pull an extra mob or two, they will use Evasion and tank it to the face. This build does something else, it enables the Rogue to be offensive with Adrenaline Rush and Blade Flurry, allowing a Rogue to burst down any extra mobs.

Combat Swords has great progression while leveling. As with any melee class, there is a significant power spike with every new weapon acquired. While this might not seem like a huge positive, it "feels" really great to get a new weapon. And this build certainly takes advantage of powerful Swords, thanks to the talent Sword Specialization, which has a chance to strike a second time with each weapon swing. While leveling, it is highly recommended to seek out new Swords from a quest or dungeon, as it has a huge impact on damage output.

Combat Swords is easy to transition into raiding with. With Thrash Blade or Dal'Rend's Arms, this build can transition into a Raiding Build very easily. By stacking enough hit rating on high end gear such as Devilsaur Armor, Truestrike Shoulders, Blackstone Ring, or even Rune of the Guard Captain, this exact Build is perfect for stepping into Molten Core for the very first time. While doing Onyxia, if a Combat Swords Rogue is lucky enough to get Vis'kag the Bloodletter, they can quickly become a powerhouse on damage meters!

Levels 10-60 as Combat Swords Rogue in Classic WoW

Improved Sinister Strike: This is a must have talent, straight away. Reducing the cost of Sinister Strike from 45 Energy to 40 is critical to this build, as it enables the Rogue to spam Sinister Strike more often, and on every second tick of Energy (which equals 40 energy).

Improved Gouge: An absolute necessity for survival. With Improved Gouge, a Rogue can Gouge an enemy and cast a nearly full Runecloth Bandage, healing up a large portion of their health. In situations where the Rogue doesn't need to heal, this can still be a great tool, allowing the Rogue to Gouge and wait for energy to pile up!

Precision: Hit Rating is pretty much non existent until the later stages of the leveling process. By picking up 5 points in Precision as quickly as possible, a Rogue can secure a solid 5% Hit, which goes a really long way in damage output. For clarity's sake, the minimum hit rating required to land every Ability Attack (Yellow hits, like Sinister Strike or Eviscerate) is 9% Hit Rating. While not all the way there, it's certainly better than 0%.

Endurance: Endurance is fantastic for leveling, both Sprint and Evasion are "defensive" cooldowns, as Sprint can be used to run away from a pack of enemies, and Evasion allows you to face tank a group if necessary. Having both of these abilities on a shorter cooldown is just a must have.

Improved Sprint: Improved Sprint, while not an absolute necessity, is really great on a PvP server. If a Mage, a Druid, uses their root abilities on a Rogue, or even a Hunter or Warrior getting Improved Wing Clip / Improved Hamstring proc, that Rogue is stuck and likely going to die. Thankfully with Improved Sprint, there is a sure fire way for the Rogue to break free from a snare effect. This talent isn't quite as necessary for Gnome Rogues with Escape Artist.

Lightning Reflexes: This talent point is just a flex point and can be spent anywhere, based on preference.

Dual Wield Specialization: While leveling and grinding on mobs, you will strike with your off hand weapon quite a bit. Dual Wield Specialization offers a flat damage boost to your off hand, and ties in nicely with Sword Specialization, boosting the off hand weapon extra swing procs, as well. This Talent also has a huge impact in raiding, when you are fighting in a boss encounter, the fight duration is much longer, which means many more off hand weapon swings will connect on the boss.

Blade Flurry: Blade Flurry is a major key to this build. This is the only AoE damage ability a Rogue has in Classic WoW, which means it is a must have talent. With Blade Flurry, a Rogue can deal significant AoE damage, especially when paired with Adrenaline Rush. Each Sinister Strike Swing, auto-attack, and sword specialization proc will deal damage to nearby enemies. Blade Flurry is also great because it gives the Rogue the option to pull more than one mob at a time, if the cooldown is available.

Sword Specialization: This is what this entire Build is all about. Sword Specialization is the most impactful talents for any Sword wielding Rogue, period. This talent is not just a massive advantage during leveling, it is also a vital piece to the raiding build, as well.

Weapon Expertise: Similarly to hit rating, weapon skill can play a huge role in damage per second during a raid encounter. This is a must have talent.

Aggression: During leveling, Eviscerate is typically used much more often than when in a raid, so this is a great talent to pick up. Even when raiding, it's still recommended, but the damage boost to eviscerate isn't that big of a deal.

Adrenaline Rush: Adrenaline Rush is one of the major components to the damage potential of this build. With Adrenaline Rush, a Rogue can spam multiple Sinister Strikes and Eviscerates. As previously mentioned, with Sinister Strike only costing 40 energy, a rogue can use a Sinister Strike after every tick of energy from Energy Rush.

Malice: The extra critical strike chance from Malice is just a solid increase in damage output.

Ruthlessness: Ruthlessness does two things really well, first it allows a rogue to keep their momentum going, while also giving a small damage potential boost. With the extra combo points generated from this talent, you might get an extra slice and dice over the course of a dungeon boss or an elite monster.

Improved Slice and Dice: By the time you are picking up this talent, you'll be in the early 50's, where you can start transitioning into preparation for raiding, where you run dungeons and try to get any pre-raid Best in Slot items. This is a great time to start shifting away from using Eviscerate on every mob and start practicing the raid rotation, where you get slice and dice up as quickly as possible.

Relentless Strikes: Similarly to Ruthlessness, Relentless Strikes is amazing for momentum. It is also a great motivator for a Rogue, nudging the rogue to use finishers with as many combo points as possible, so you can get the guaranteed 25 energy. For every five point slice and dice, the rogue will essentially get the finishing move for no energy cost!

Lethality: Lethality is a strict damage boost, increasing the damage dealt from critical strikes. While not necessarily flashy, it can go a long way during a dungeon boss or elite mob!

Murder: Another flat damage boost against some types of enemy targets. 2% damage boost isn't that exciting, but when a fight lasts a long time, that 2% might translate into thousands of damage!

Combat Swords Rogue Leveling Consumables in Classic WoW

Heavy Runecloth Bandage or the highest bandage craftable: Used in conjunction with Gouge or Blind, to heal up during a difficult fight.

Thistle Tea: A rogue's best friend. This consumable can come in very handy when cutting it close with an enemy mob, using a Thistle Tea can give you the energy needed to burst an enemy target down.

Instant Poison VI: The recommended poison to use while leveling. Because Deadly Poison does damage over time, it doesn't maximize damage potential during a short fight, of course in a really long fight, Deadly Poison will do more damage, but it takes up a debuff slot - so be careful not to use it in a raid encounter.

Blinding Powder: Reagent for Blind, a must have.

Flash Powder: Reagent for Vanish, also a must have.

Combat Swords Rogue Leveling Rotation in Classic WoW

Open with Cheap Shot, gaining two combo points and stunning the target briefly.

Spam Sinister Strike.

Use Eviscerate. Sometimes consider Slice and Dice if you pulled a second mob and are about to switch over, or if the mob has a lot of remaining health.

If you are low on health, consider Gouge and Heavy Runecloth Bandage.

If you pulled multiple enemies, consider Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush to burst the group down.

What did you do with the talents?

Comment by Mncdk

Hit rating needed to land all abilities is not 9%, unless you're constantly attacking mobs 3 levels above your own.

Comment by insflavour

Why wouldn't you go Riposte?
Sounds like an awesome attack, plus it disarms your enemy for 6 sec, which helps a lot in mitigating damage.

The guide states:

Lightning Reflexes: This talent point is just a flex point and can be spent anywhere, based on preference.

"spent anywhere" is a bit deceiving! Make sure you don't make my mistake - spend the talent point in Combat, otherwise you won't be have the 15 Combat talent points required for the first Dual Wield Specialization.

Comment by Solon22

This is a terrible guide. Not getting riposte? Seriously? Despite the title, this guide is not for leveling purposes.
