Recipe: Mithril Head Trout - sold in Stranglethorn Vale (both), Darkshore, Wetlands, Hillsbrad, and Ironforge (Alliance), and Ashenvale, Orgrimmar, Undercity, and Desolace (Horde) - see vendor list
You can also do Recipe: Rockscale Cod if you prefer; it's a common side fish and the recipe is sold by the same vendor. However, it turns Yellow at 190 versus 215 for Mithril Trout, so use any supplies early.

Recipe: Mightfish Steak - sold in Feralas - Vivianna in Feathermoon Stronghold, /way 31.2 43.4, or Sheendra Tallgrass, Camp Mojache, /way 74.6 42.8. These vendors also sell Recipe: Lobster Stew and Recipe: Baked Salmon, whose fish are all caught in the same high-level areas. Learning all three gives you more choices for leveling.

Not a bad guide. Having the list of food buffs for classes will definitely be useful later on when trying to cook everything for my guild's runs. My only critique is it would be nice to have a recommended skill up path; though I assume you are waiting for updated data to add one. Keep up the great work on the guides!

Comment by marth354

Also just noticed that the Blessed sun fruit juice and Rum tum tuber materials columns in the priest, shaman, and paladin sections aren't quite right. The info for blessed sun fruit juice is in the row with the Rum Tum Tubers and the Blessed sun fruit juice has the Chimaerok chops materials listed.

Comment by Zaviothan

should add example skill up path through entirety of fish, for people wanting to skill up fishing and cooking at the same time & making it cheaper. (useful for those wanting to fish squid or nightfin etc later on).

Comment by Calthaza

Smoked Desert Dumplings were not ingame until patch 1.8, which means we should not see that until phase 4 of Classic.

Comment by Manae

Worth particular note:
STV and Arathi raptors are absolutely amazing for leveling cooking. They readily drop both eggs and meat that can get you from 130 to 235.

Comment by OldManSlerm

Nice work. Excellent info.

Just a couple notes...

Under Expert Cooking, Wulan is in Desolace. The map is correct, but the label says Ashenvale.

And the first best way from 1-40 is always spiced bread with mats from the vendor right beside the trainer.

Comment by Natedog515

I just noticed this and i'm not trying to nit pick, but the pin on the map for Zarrin the Night Elf trainer in Teldrassil is way too high. I don't know the exact cords but he is stationed right outside the hut that can be seen on the map right above the "N" in Dolanaar.

Comment by KnuteOle

One suggestion: when you learn cooking, you do learn Basic Campfire. However, to create the fire, you must have Flint and Tinder in your bag, and one Simple Wood. You need one wood per fire you create; the flint and tinder is reusable.

I brought this up in my guild the other day and was surprised how many people didn't realize that, or simply forgot, so it may be worth mentioning.

Comment by Robbie

Thanks for taking the time to write this guide, it will come in really handy I'm sure. :)

Comment by Magedraenei

Thistle Tea is a great Rogue class item to make with cooking! Credit to the comment on the news feed article which mentioned it first 👍

Comment by Silmafarion

Another nifty food item that is pretty decent for melee classes is the Dragonbreath Chili from Dustwallow Marsh (just don't jump in water or the Well Fed buff disappears). It's sold by Helenia Olden for Alliance and Ogg'marr for Horde.

Thanks for the guide!

Comment by YungGnome

Ty for the guide, very informative! I like how fishing recipes are included all the way through as an alternative.

1 minor correction: you've marked Sheendra Tallgrass as an Alliance NPC and Vivianna as Horde, but it's the other way around.

Comment by Katarinea

Note: the Strider Stew recipe IS available for Alliance through a quest in Auberdine.

Comment by TrueFalse

Thanks for the guide.

A couple of minor quibbles:

You need 12 Giant Eggs for the artisan cooking quest, not 10. Also, your suggested quantities are way off. You'll need close to double what is listed here for most of the skill gaps, because many will go green before you get to the next recipe.

Comment by Fishnabarrel

Save your money and bag space by cooking everything at the stove in an inn after farming the mats. Free fire is beneficial.

Comment by Laxxboy

The marker for the Horde cooking trainer Zamja is also waaaay off

Comment by utebehemoth

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like there's a gap for Horde from 100-130. Curiously Tasty Omelette has a skill requirement of 130.

Comment by Kiria16939

WOWHEAD - please make a guide for all available cooking recipes by quest, you have one for vendors but not for quests

Comment by Mardys

Says Recipe: Strider Stew is horde only but Alliance can do a quest in Darkshore for this I believe?

Edit: Easy Strider Living It feels like your are not maintaining your guides very well cause I reported the error 2 months ago.

Comment by saltytonic

Small correction to the guide. Craig Nollward in Theramore is not actually a cooking trainer (unless there is some prerequisite that I have not met). He is there, he just sells a bunch of food and is listed as a <Cook>.

Comment by z3n0mal4

If you do the quest to artisan cooking (unlock 300) and need to fly from Org to Gadgetzan, don't forget to stop in Thousand Needles and buy 20 alterac swiss from the innkeeper there.

Comment by Waakalicious

Hey, this guide is incorrect in a couple spots I've found thus far.

(75-100) Crab Cake (requires 1 Crawler Meat, 1 Mild Spices) OR Cooked Crab Claw (requires 1 Crawler Claw, 1 Mild Spices)
(100-150) Seasoned Wolf Kabob (requires 2 Lean Wolf Flank, 1 Stormwind Seasoning Herbs) OR Curiously Tasty Omelet (requires 1 Raptor Egg, 1 Hot Spices)

The Cooked Crab Claw recipe isn't usable until Cooking level 85.
The Curiously Tasty Omelet recipe isn't usable until Cooking level 130.

Just a heads up that you might want to fix this as it skews your overall breakdown on what's needed to level cooking efficiently.

Comment by TheHoof

It says starting at level 100-150 you can do curiously tasty omelette. But you cant learn that till 130.

Comment by Staxus

(100-175) Bristle Whisker Catfish (requires 1 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish each)

160 cooking skill is green so 75 fish is not enough, u need more, maybe 50, maybe 100 its about luck

Comment by Jakobud

The "Leveling Classic Cooking from 1-300" section is heavily skewed towards leveling cooking as Alliance. There are several meats on there that (early in the leveling process) you only find in Alliance leveling zones. Would be nice to provide Horde alternatives.

Comment by foormi92

THIS IS AN ALLIANCE GUIDE! DON'T DO THIS IF YOU ARE HORDE!

Comment by p1ka2So

Quissy, thank you for such a detailed guide!

Let me draw your attention at a small typo — in the list of maps of Horde cooking trainers section used Blacksmithing instead of Cooking for last 4 of them.

Comment by Icesabar

Cooking Trainer - Shandrina, She had no training to offer for Expect Cooking, is there a character level requirement? I my hunter is a lvl 26, and there is nothing in the guide that states a level requirement!

Comment by frozenfan610

Recipe: Kaldorei Spider Kabob isn't on the Alliance-Only Cooking Recipes. in Classic, it's only available to Alliance players, as a reward from the quest "Recipe of the Kaldorei". on Standard (think it started with patch 4.0 possibly) it was added to recipes learned from cooking trainers for both Alliance and Horde players.

Comment by DNSStylewalker

(225-250) Spotted Yellowtail (requires 1 Raw Spotted Yellowtail each)

Spotted Yellowtail is orange from 225 - 265

Comment by musclemonkeh

"To learn Artisan Cooking, you must first complete a quest line, be at least level 35, and have your Cooking skill level at least 225."

This might more accurately say "Cooking skill AT 225" since, unless it's different than other skills, your skill level will not advance beyond 225 until you learn Artisan Cooking.

Comment by OwlGirl

Aren't you missing DIg Rat Stew in the Horde only part of the lists?

Comment by BrisVegas

For the Horde gap 100-130, I found Smoked Sagefish worked well, fish up Sagefish from the river next to Tarren Mill. Heaps of fishing pools so you can smash it out pretty quick. Local mobs are around lvl 25.

Comment by Dahk

If you are levelling Cooking with Fish, there is no need to switch to Salmon. You can do Spotted Yellowtail to 300. Getting to 290 is easy with only a few misses. Last 10 takes a bit but is certainly possible. I say this because if raw Yellowtail is usually cheap on the AH.

Comment by Lunae

Thank you for the guide. It's been nice as I go along.

Small note: Shandrina, in Silverwind Refuge, sells the Expert Cookbook for 90s, not 1g.

This is even marked on her page here on wowhead as being such.

Comment by 3ICE

Why does this article mention the six bar collectors? This is a cooking guide, not mining!

Quest NPC: Sergeant Stonebrow <Copper Bar Collector> 64.1, 65.5
Quest NPC: Corporal Carnes <Iron Bar Collector> 65.5, 63.9
Quest NPC: Dame Twinbraid <Thorium Bar Collector> 63.9, 68.2
Quest NPC: Miner Cromwell <Copper Bar Collector> 31.1, 66.1
Quest NPC: Grunt Maug <Tin Bar Collector> 30.9, 65.4
Quest NPC: Senior Sergeant T'kelah <Mithril Bar Collector> 31.5, 66.8

Please remove the above referenced items from the guide.

Comment by NormySan

This guide leaves a massive gap between 275 and 285 cooking that is almost impossible to fill unless if you're doing fishing at the same time. You will have to grind several hundred giant eggs or tender wolf meat since the recipes become green at this point. The best solution is to level fishing alongside cooking since there are several cooking recipes to fill this gap that requires fish.

Comment by WokkaD

The thing that's missing is the Expert Cookbook to take you from 150 to 225.

Comment by Jakobud

You can tell this guide was made by an Alliance player. How does Horde go from 100-130?

Comment by Rinike

As many others have stated before, this guide is heavily catered towards Alliance, if you're Horde multiple parts of this guide are broken.
Don't recommend following it too much.
Here is a link to a cooking guide that is for both https://www.wow-professions.com/classic/cooking-leveling-guide-classic-wow

Comment by Gulanga

Guide says you learn Smoked Desert Dumplings after completing Desert Survival Kits, which is incorrect.
You learn the recipe from the quest Desert Recipe.

Comment by MadAltoholic

Great guide!

Just want to add that I used Baked Salmon instead of Mightfish Steak to level from 275-300 as the salmon were much easier to farm than the mightfish... best spot I found was Eastern Plaguelands. I fished up 1 out of 3 casts compared to 1 out of 8 for the mightfish.

Comment by Elnuvya

If you're playing Burning Crusade Classic, and you're stuck leveling cooking from 285 to 300, check out Baked Salmon and Lobster Stew, which are also available from Vivianna in Feathermoon Stronghold. Mightfish Steak is not the only option.

Comment by fireshadow

once you hit 285+ you can do the sandworm quests and get the desert cooking quest from Calandrath (innkeeper) in silithus to finish up to 300+ with TBC. don't have to worry about all the other quests or chains..just grab the communication questline to kill the sandworms then the desert cookbook quest and you should have enough meat from the other two quests to complete the cooking one which you don't have to finish being you learn the desert dumplings turning in the desert recipe quest.

Comment by Jchivato

Like so many guides that are not up-to-date for classic expansions, this one suffers. As many have mentioned, factions are not considered and there are gaps in levels; e.g., 275-285. Not very efficient. I'm looking for a gap filler.

Comment by SirGrahame

I just leveled to 300 cooking with a large assist from this guide. Well done!

I had trouble at the end though. At 276, I found it very hard to find any recipe I could use as I did not level fishing at the same time. (Now, I know better.)

So I had to use the AH where I found Raw Whitescale Salmon selling at close to 20gold apiece! Who can afford that? I ended up trying to get the Smoked Desert Dumplings recipe in Silithus but could not find that either. Then I read in a small comment that it didn't even show up until you were 285, 9 levels above me. So I went to the AH again and searched for the yellow recipe ingredient, Raw Nightfin Snapper, which I got for 4gold for 5, much more affordable. I bought 23 of those and ended up at 287. After that, the sandworm meat will get you up to 300.

Bottom line? If you don't have fishing, this may be the only way to level to 300.

Comment by Syphex

Been looking at a few cooking guides and unsure of why they dont tell u to make Spiced wolf meat after cooking level 10. You can be far more mats efficient at the 10-50 stages of cooking.
Since Mild spices are very cheap to begin with, you should start making Spiced Wolf Meat as soon as possible.

There are Three reasons for this

It provides a buff usable at low level which also sells well on the Auction House
Higher proc chance for a skill level and is a skill level quality higher than Charred Wolf Meat, so u can make it longer
It sells for 5 more copper, meaning you make 4 copper more per meat, at low level its pretty helpful, specially if you sell in bulk

Have now leveled up cooking 6 times, and the spiced Wolf meat have had a higher proc chance in level ups than the Charred wolf meat. + it actually helps a ton while leveling between mobs because of the spirit.

Comment by Bombaklaat

Feel like ppl missing out on two low level recipes: Strider Stew and Crispy Lizard Tail, two recipes that are easy for horde to skill up on due to convenience of farm with mobs that actually have quest tied to them.
Both can be bought from Troll vendor in Crossroads

Comment by Wimbleton

Found her at 49.48, 67.06. Whatever the coords are, she's in the Silverwind Refuge in the right-side wing after you enter the front door.

Comment by Coldbear

The 1-40 part is seriously messed up. Wtf to start with as non-Fishing horde with no cash?

UPDATE: If you start off as Night Elf - get Fishing up to 30 in Teldrassil (incl. on the shore outside Darnassus) before a quest or ...two (ugh) in Darkshore. This helps with Cooking and XP.

If you start off elsewhere kill all the boars, which is plenty in Durotar and Elwynn Forest at least. About 50 Chunk of Boar Meat should do you good.

Comment by Pozitron1979

SOD Phase 6 offers 2 new recipes. You have to complete the Dust to Dust quest in Silithus first.

Comment by Maioranae

Best option for 0-50 for Horde is Slitherskin Mackerel. Senjin Village fishing supply vendor has the recipe. Along the whole coast of Durotar the only fish caught in classic is the Mackeral. The only non fish caught is a sealed trunk usually with one item mostly light leather or bolt of linen. Easier than smallfish because you can get a lot of mudsnapper trying to get 50 smallfish

Comment by hibiskus

Honestly, with as much as you'll be fishing to carry you thru 225-300 in that profession, you will get more than enough yellowtail to push you to 300 cooking. Mightfish is a little faster, but not necessary.

Comment by 123user

There are a number of cooking recipes that can be used to level your skill while actually netting a little gold through simply vendoring your finished products. I would highly recommend using these for leveling over anything else -- if you can get your hands on the recipes themselves, as some of them are only available from specialty vendors (Vendor-Tron 1000 and Super-Seller 680) etc.
Skill Food Ingredient to buy from AH Price to buy at Average gold per hour Other
100 Seasoned Wolf Kabob Lean Wolf Flank sub 1s 9.6g/h (27.84g/h if meat bought @ vendor price) Alliance recipe (Duskwood quest/Stormwind vendor)
110 Lean Venison Stag Meat sub 1s 14.4g/h (18g/h if meat bought @ vendor price)
120 Crispy Lizard Tail Thunder Lizard Tail sub 1s 13.2g/h (21.84g/h if meat bought @ vendor price) Horde recipe (The Crossroads vendor)
150 Heavy Crocolisk Stew Tender Crocolisk Meat vendor price 10.8g/h Horde recipe (Dustwallow Marsh vendor)
175 Barbecued Buzzard Wing Buzzard Wing vendor price 9.24g/h
175 Carrion Surprise Mystery Meat sub 2s 7.20g/h (22.80g/h if meat bought @ vendor price)
175 Giant Clam Scorcho Giant Clam Meat sub 2s 8.64g/h (24.12g/h if meat bought @ vendor price)
175 Hot Wolf Ribs Red Wolf Meat sub 2s 8.64g/h (22.20g/h if meat bought @ vendor price)
175 Jungle Stew Tiger Meat sub 4.5s 16.8g/h (60.36g/h if meat bought @ vendor price)
175 Roast Raptor Raptor Flesh sub 1.5s 13.2g/h (20.76g/h if meat bought @ vendor price)
175 Mystery Stew Mystery Meat vendor price 11.16g/h
225 Spiced Chili Crab Tender Crab Meat vendor price 12.96g/h
Cooking 1 product takes 3 seconds, so you can craft 1200 of any of these items in 1 hour. The GPH estimate is simply VENDOR_VALUE - MATERIAL_COST * 1200. The initial GPH value is based on your "Price to buy at"; e.g. if you buy your Lean Wolf Flanks at 1 silver each, you're making 9.6g/h cooking Seasoned Wolf Kabobs; if you get them at vendor price, you're making 27.84g/h.

Out of all these foods, Jungle Stew is by far the most profitable craft, and you can get up to 255 Cooking starting from 175 with that single recipe. Some meats are less common than others, but if you can source enough Tender Crab Meat, cooking Spiced Chili Crab can get you to 300 Cooking.

Comment by serwus6

Please please please dont use mighfish for leveling, you easily can fish Raw Whitescale Salmon and use Recipe: Baked Salmon to get 275-300 in no time
