Craft or buy the next level-appropriate Wand from the Enchanting profession as early as possible. This includes the Novice's Practice Wand available from level 1, Lesser Magic Wand at level 5, and Greater Magic Wand at level 13. Using a Wand to deal most of your damage is essential to minimizing downtime while leveling.

Be mindful of the "five-second rule" for Mana recovery, which requires 5 seconds without casting before you begin to recover Mana from Spirit. This mechanic is the reason using a Wand to finish off enemies is so effective, especially during early leveling. Try to avoid random, unnecessary spell casts in between Wand attacks, as this will reset the 5-second timer.

Power Word: Shield is an excellent tool while leveling not only to reduce incoming damage, but also to prevent attacks from interrupting or pushing back your spell casts. Power Word: Shield lasts up to 30 seconds and can be used outside of combat before pulling an enemy.

Don't ignore your other utility spells like Inner Fire and Touch of Weakness (Undead Racial). These abilities can also be used out of combat before pulling an enemy, and can provide a massive reduction to incoming damage.

When it comes to gearing, early on you're looking for stats like Spell Power, Intellect, and Spirit to support your damage throughput and Mana economy. Tailoring is a great way to obtain level-appropriate Cloth gear with useful stats.

Tips for Dungeons:

As a Shadow Priest in early dungeons, you can generally be flexible and either deal damage or heal allies as needed. Be particularly mindful of your Mana, especially when healing, and don't be afraid to use your Wand to recover Mana during less intense moments so that you're ready to go for the next dangerous pull.

Make sure to also be mindful of your Threat generation in dungeons, especially early on, as Tanks often have limited tools available to manage aggro. Priests can generate a lot of Threat through their healing spells and damaging abilities like Mind Blast. While Fade can be a useful tool in a pinch if you accidentally pull aggro, just note that its effect is only temporary, and the Tank will need to take action to prevent the enemy from immediately turning back to you once the spell's duration ends.

To activate Spirit Tap, you must deal the last hit or killing blow to the enemy target. Whenever possible, coordinate with your group to help you get killing blows, as this will significantly improve your Mana economy over the course of a dungeon.

When fighting multiple enemies, you can apply Shadow Word: Pain to additional enemies before returning to focus on your primary target; just be mindful of your Mana.

Best Level 20 Talent Build for Shadow Priests in Forever

Your first two talent points will go into Wand Specialization, as the extra 25% damage from Wands is tremendously valuable, especially while early leveling.

The next talent chosen is Spirit Tap, which, when coupled eventually with Meditation, makes up Shadow's Mana recovery engine. These points will serve you well both while leveling and into endgame at max level.

Two talent points in Improved Shadow Word: Pain provide a strong damage boost for both leveling and group play, increasing Shadow Word: Pain damage output by up to 33%.

The last two talent points don't have particularly impressive options, but putting these points into Shadow Focus is a reasonable option which improves your damage output while leveling, and is especially valuable in later levels. Alternative options here include Twilight Focus for improved quality-of-life while leveling solo and in PvP encounters, Shadow Reach to be able to reach enemies from an even safer distance, or Twin Disciplines to start working towards key Discipline talents like Meditation and Inner Focus.
