Arcane: Each time you deal arcane damage to a target, the remaining cooldown on Presence of Mind is reduced by 1 sec.

Fire: When Improved Scorch is talented, targets hit by your Blast Wave will also have 5 stacks of Fire Vulnerability applied to them.

Frost: While Ice Barrier is active the damage done by Frost spells and effects is increased by up to 100.

Step 1 - Essence of Fire

Use a Comprehension Charm to decipher the Scroll: SEENECS FO RIEF, which creates Scroll: Essence of Fire.

Now you must find the mysterious energy source, which is located at the Magical Stone at 14.8 56.6 in western Burning Steppes by Draco’dar. Destroy the fire totem that spawns by using Frost spells.

Next, a Primordial Flame will spawn, who drops Depleted Essence of Fire on death. Fuse Depleted Essence of Fire with Scroll: Essence of Fire to create Imbued Essence of Fire.

Bring this to your Portal Trainer - Larimaine Purdue in Stormwind or Oran Snakewrithe in Undercity.

Step 2 - The Librarian's Apprentice

For this step, you'll need to investigate another strong magical power, which means traveling to Valxx Cracklequil in Everlook, Winterspring. She's located to the left of the town entrance.

Like before, you'll need to find another Magical Stone. This one is located by Frostwhisper Gorge in southern Winterspring, around 63.4 68.8. Destroy the frost totem that spawns by using Fire spells. Next, a Outcast Cryomancer will spawn, who drops Depleted Essence of Frost in death.

To fuse Depleted Essence of Frost, you will need a special scroll. Kill nearby Frostmaul Giant for Scroll: SEENECS FO ROFTS which can be deciphered into Scroll: Essence of Frost. You may need to collect this before the Magical Stone will spawn.

Combine Scroll: Essence of Frost with Depleted Essence of Frost for Imbued Essence of Frost. Return to Everlook.

Step 4 - A Foul Interference

Travel to Mazthoril to the southwest of Everlook to stop the corruption.

Kill Manathirst Imp around 56.6 50.4 for Scroll: SERELS PATALIS GNEMIND, which can be deciphered into Scroll of Lesser Spatial Mending. You must slay 5 Fel Interloper from Feb Portals, so bring 5 Comprehension Charm for this stage.

Use the blue teleport pad in the cave to teleport up to Haleh, who will reward you Incomplete Staff of Order. Combine this with Imbued Essence of Fire and Imbued Essence of Frost for your Staff of Order!

For the Imps I found there were way more imps all the way into the cave, then you're right next to the teleport that takes you to the final turn in

I cannot figure out how to get the primordial flame to spawn. I’ve killed the magical stone many times but it will not spawn. I am on the part where I need to loot the depleted essence.

Mages having to run around the entire game killing different mobs in all of their class spells and fighting/jumping (or getting jumped by) multiple other players for the tags on mobs with terrible drop rates. Meanwhile, every other class has an extremely short chain with personal instances that they can easily complete in an hour or less. SoD mage is so much fun!

I have killed 20 Frostmaul Giants for the 3rd step and no luck getting a scroll. The whole place is absolutely flooded with mages during peak hours so this is quite difficult. I've heard some people mention that it's bugged and you can't loot the scroll if you already have the depleted essence of frost, but i'm not sure if they're just trolling so I will delete it and possibly get stuck.

i cannot get or do the quest because i had a full quest log, so im F***d. Have anyone found a solution with this buggy Scroll: Essence of fire @#$% ?

Step 1 - works no issues,
Step 2 - works no issues,
Step 3- get a quest from Valxx Cracklequil, after that go directly to Frostmaul Giants to kill them for Scroll: SEENECS FO ROFTS. Avoid going to or near the totem first. If you do the totem first - it will change the order of the quest and you will need to abandon it and start over from Everlook because Giants will NOT drop the scroll.
Use comprehension charm on it to decrypt it.
Go to the totem, destroy it and then kill Outcast Cryomancer. Imbue the essence. Go back to Everlook to turn in the quest.
Step 4 - Go to the cave, deep inside of it (I went deep but imps spawn at the entrance too, I believe), faster to do it with other mages in a party. Kill imps, get scrolls, use charms on them, use them on 5 portals, kill 5 mobs that spawn from them, step on the mark to travel to the same npc you once turned in the Onyxia quest to and get your weapon! Congrats

Big correction on Step 1: I did NOT hand this in to Thuul in Orgrimmar but to Oran Snakewrithe in Undercity. She's one of the Librarians who you hand books to for multiple runes as well.

TL;DR: If you're having trouble with the frost portion, kill the frost totem, but do not kill or loot the cultist. Kill giants until scroll drops, then kill cultist.

Having done this on two mages now, and the first one had trouble with the frost portion:

Step 1: Very simple. Translate the scroll FIRST, go to Dracodar. Make sure you're not in a raid group (some other mage was having trouble this way). Use frost on the thing, kill the elemental, combine, head to Stormwind. I had no issues with this at any point. I have no idea what you'd do if you didn't get the quest, or abandoned it, but I would guess that the Librarian in Stormwind would start it up again?

Step 2: Not so simple. But I figured it out. Go to Frostwhisper Gorge. Jump down and blink or slowfall or iceblock or run down and go to where the ice thing is. You'll get quest progress for this. Kill the ice thing from MAXIMUM range (fireball didn't work but frostfire bolt did). You will get quest progress, but do not aggro or kill the cultist dude. He is a personal mob, so people can't steal him from you, and he lasted at least 3 minutes (probably lasts indefinitely for you). While he is standing there and alive, kill frost giants. My first time, I killed the cultist first and looted the item, and the scroll didn't drop after killing 14 giants. Some mage said it was bugged whatever whatever, so I destroyed the item and got the scroll to drop after two kills. But then I couldn't summon the cultist again, so I had to abandon and start completely over. Killed another 20 giants, no drop. Killed the ice thing, didn't kill the cultist, and scroll dropped off of the first giant. I believe having the essence in your inventory stops the scroll from dropping, but the scroll won't drop until you progress the quest and kill the ice thing. On my second mage, I killed the ice thing, ignored the cultist, and the scroll dropped from the first giant I killed. Killed the cultist, got my essence, quest over.

Step 3: Kill imps, use scrolls, kill invaders. Just make sure you have comprehension charms or your personal spellbook. There are a ton of imps and portals near the blue rune that teleports you to Haleh, and if you go there early it gives quest progression but doesn't stop you from looting scrolls.

Would be nice if your writers paid attention when writing these guides and didn't give steps that cause the quest to bug out. Glad I only paid once to support but now use a permanent Adblock for this site if this is the quality of the writing.

If you abandon the quest from the scroll, you are instantly given the scroll.

Just did this on 7/21/2026 for the Fresh event. Here's how to do the Frost Giants: if you looted the shard before killing the giants, you HAVE to delete the quest and go back to Everlook to start it over.
This time, jump into the gorge, complete the quest by being near the frost totem, but DON'T KILL IT. Kill frost giants. My scroll dropped on the 2nd kill. NOW you can kill the totem and get the shard and infuse it.

Silly, but that's how they designed it.
