Dragonflight Pre-Patch: Forbidden Reach Characters & Story

By DiscordianKitty Updated: 2024/02/26

Located off the coast of the Dragon Isles, the Forbidden Reach was fashioned by Neltharion the Earth-Warder to serve as a training ground for his ultimate soldiers, the dracthyr. But in the aftermath of a terrible battle, the island has lain dormant and abandonded for ages--until the return of an ancient enemy causes the dracthyr to stir.Noteable Characters

Ebyssian

The oldest uncorrupted Black Dragon alive, Ebyssian's egg was purified ten thousand years ago by the Highmountain Tauren hero Huln Highmountain.

Ebyssian has served as the spiritual advisor to Huln's descendants ever since, under his visage form of Spiritwalker Ebonhorn.

In the Forbidden Reach, Ebyssian arrives with Wrathion to help the dracthyr after awakening from their stasis, and is the one to accompany Horde Dracthyr to Orgrimmar.

Wrathion

Wrathion, the Black Prince, is an uncorrupted Black Dragon. Since his birth during Cataclysm, Wrathion has been involved in many schemes over the years, and while his actions have often been questionable, his motivation has remained the same: to protect Azeroth, and restore the Black Dragonflight.

While they were still boys, Wrathion developed a strong personal friendship with Anduin Wrynn, then Prince of the Alliance. Though they have had their differences, the affection between them seems genuine.

In the Forbidden Reach, Wrathion arrives with Ebyssian to help the dracthyr after awakening from their stasis, and is the one to accompany Alliance Dracthyr to Stormwind.

In a conversation between Turalyon and Mathias Shaw, it's mentioned that Wrathion has been heard asking after Anduin.

Emberthal

Scalecommander Emberthal is the faction leader of the Adamant Vigil, a dracthyr Weyrn tasked with being the eyes and ears of the black dragonflight. She was once the highest-ranking dracthyr under Neltharion himself.

Emberthal shared several conversations with Nozdormu, the Bronze Dragon Aspect, during the Dragonflight Legacies animated shorts, where she learned about the history of the Dragonflights, as well as important truths about the dracthyr's own history.

By the end of the dracthyr starting area, it is Emberthal's task to spread the truth of what Neltharion did to them among her fellow dracthyr. Though her Weyrn was wiped out, Emberthal has turned her attention to caring for all dracthyr, and can be considered their unifying faction leader - Alliance, Horde or otherwise.

Sarkareth

Scalecommander Sarkareth is leader of the Ebon Scales, a dracthyr Weyrn tasked with destroying the Black Dragonflight's enemies.

Sarkareth is shown to be abrasive and mistrustful, even towards his fellow Dracthyr.

By the end of the dracthyr starting area, Sarkareth and his Ebon Scales have chosen to separate from their fellow Dracthyr, renaming themselves the Sundered Flame. When next they are met, they will be enemies.

Cindrethresh

Scalecommander Cindrethresh is the leader of the Dark Talons, a dracthyr Weyrn.

Though she can seem chaotic and brash at times, Cindrethresh is also shown to be fiercely loyal and affectionate, and she seems to be especially fond of Scalecommander Viridia.

By the end of the dracthyr starting area, Cindrethresh chooses to lead her Weyrn to Orgrimmar, and becomes the faction leader of Horde dracthyr.

Azurathel

Scalecommander Azurathel is the leader of the Obsidian Warders, a dracthyr Weyrn.

A fan of discipline and order, Azurathel is shown to be steady and reliable.

By the end of the dracthyr starting area, Azurathel chooses to lead his Weyrn to Stormwind, and becomes the faction leader of Alliance dracthyr.

Viridia

Scalecommander Viridia is leader of the Healing Wings, a Dracthyr Weyrn.

Viridia's faction believes strongly in the powers of mercy and kindness, and is shown to be devoted to healing all.

Viridia's mercy makes a special impression on Atrenosh Hailstone and the Blue Drakonid left behind in the Forbidden Reach to destroy the Dracthyr, and as a result, they become allies instead.

At the end of the Dracthyr starting experience, Viridia chooses to stay behind in the Forbidden Reach, to help others who still need it.

Neltharion

The former Black Dragon Aspect, Neltharion was the creator of the Dracthyr. Impressed by the mortal races, Neltharion sought to create ideal soldiers with the Dracthyr, by combining the essence of dragons with the adaptability of the mortal races.

As an Aspect, Neltharion was given dominion over the Earth. Unfortunately, this made him vulnerable to the whispers of the Old Gods, who lurked in the deep places of Azeroth. Neltharion fell to corruption and became Deathwing, and eventually, we - along with the remaining Aspects - had to face and kill him in a fight that saved Azeroth, but at the cost of the Dragon Aspects losing their powers.

Malygos

Malygos was the former Blue Dragon Aspect. Many years ago, he started a terrible war against the mortal races, attempting to purge any magic users who were not part of the Blue Dragonflight. With the help of the Red Dragonflight, we eventually had to face and kill him.

Malygos was once Neltharion's closest friend. Blue Dragons of the Forbidden Reach have stayed behind on his orders, tasked to watch the sleeping chreches.

It was Malygos's spell that put the Dracthyr to sleep. It seems Malygos, like Neltharion, believed dracthyr in possession of their own free will are a grave threat, and the Blue Dragons left behind believe it would be better to die collapsing the chreches - wiping them all out - than allow any dracthyr to escape.

Raszageth, the Storm-Eater

A monstrously poweful primal dragon, Raszageth fiercely opposes the Dragon Aspects and everything they represent - believing the Titans' influence on the Proto-Dragons took away their freedom and natural power.

Raszageth was imprisoned in Froststone Vault many thousands of years ago, but the years have done nothing to calm her ability to summon the mightiest of storms.

By the end of the dracthyr starting area, Raszageth has been released. She is the final boss in the Vault of the Incarnates raid.

Kurog Grimtotem

Once a prized pupil of Magatha Grimtotem, Kurog is a master of the primal elements, and devoted Primalist.

As a tribe, the Grimtotem are unusually aggressive for Tauren - and its members have often played antagonistic roles throughout Azeroth's history.

By the end of the dracthyr starting area, Kurog has successfully released Raszageth. Grimtotem is the third-last boss in the Vault of the Incarnates raid.

Atrenosh Hailstone & the Blue Drakonid

Atrenosh Hailstone is the leader of blue drakonid tasked, along, like all other members of the Blue Dragonflight present on this island, with watching over the sleeping Dracthyr. Atrenosh is sworn to keep the Dracthyr from the world "at all costs".

When Scalecommander Viridia commands that Atrenosh and his fellow Drakonid be treated with mercy, Atrenosh is deeply impressed. Realizing the dracthyr are not the monsters he was led to believe they were, he becomes an ally instead.Story Summary

The War Creche

Lore Playthrough
You awoke from a magical stasis you have no memory of entering. Unstable ruins and shattered memories are your only clues to a life that feels like a vague recollection.
You discovered and awoke Scalecommander Azurathel and several other dracthyr. No one can recall what happened, or why blue dragon magic was used to conjure a stasis.
How much time has passed? Where is the Earth-Warder, Neltharion, the black dragon whom sired the dracthyr?
Falling back on training, you and the other dracthyr arm yourselves and press towards the exist of the War Creche. Along the way you are joined by Scalecommander Cindrethresh.
However, the way is barred by a blue dragon and his drakonid minions. Their only purpose for being here seems to prevent the dracthyr from escaping into the world.
After a pitched battle, you and the dracthyr punch your way passed the blue dragon and their minions and escape the War Creche. But the dragon has collapsed the entryway behind you.

Old Weyrn Grounds

Lore Playthrough
Escaping the War Creche you and your fellow dracthyr found yourselves in the overgrown and ruined Old Weyrn Grounds, the ancient training and parade grounds of the dracthyr.
When investigating a large arcane beacon you were granted a vision of several similar beacons placed in front of the other creches of the dracthyr. Each is struck by calamity and conflict.
You also briefly saw a vision of two black dragons high in the sky.
Scalecommander Emberthal blazed onto the scene, exterminating an attacking band of tarasek. She shared stories with you and the other Scalecommanders of how she was the only survivor of her weyrn.
She also imparted wisdom of how Evokers like yourself are the elite soldiers of the dracthyr, trained by all five weyrns. Masters of magic and draconic heritage. As such, she has some thoughts on how best to levy your skills to rescue the other creches of dracthyr.

The Healing Wings

Lore Playthrough
You and Scalecommander Cindrethresh were dispatched to the Caldera of the Menders to see what was happening to the Healing Wings.
The Healing Wings are dracthyr specialized in healing and support, though Cindrethresh's primary concern was for their own Scalecommander Viridia.
Upon arrival you discovered that the Support Creche which was home to the Healing Wings had its seal breached and was flooded with toxic gasses from swarms of beetles and their nests. Dracthyr with scarred lungs emerged coughing and barely alive, their respective stasis giving way to expose them to this cloud of death.
At Scalecommander Viridia's request, you provided healing to the severely injured Healing Wings.
She even asked you to provide healing for the blue drakonid who had been holding the dracthyr prisoner. In doing so, it forced the drakonid to confront their previous expectations of the dracthyr, and even change allegiances.
Armed against the toxins, you ventured into the Support Creche to recover survivors, find evidence of what had transpired, and the horn signet rings of the fallen so that they might be remembered.

The Ebon Scales

Lore Playthrough
You and several others were dispatched to Stormsunder Crater to aid the Ebon Scales. This weyrn of dracthyr specialize in siege magics, yet find themselves under siege.
Proto-dragons infused with elemental magic, along with a zealous tauren shaman, seem to be conducting an empowerment ritual. They are preventing the Ebon Scales from escaping their creche.
These enemies, calling themselves Primalists, seek to awaken or free some powerful entity trapped in the Forbidden Reach.
After driving the main Primalist forces from Stormsunder Crater, you were able to rendevous with the Ebon Scales.
Led by Scalecommander Sarkareth, these dracthyr were enraged by the state of affairs. Despite a reluctance to take any order not directly issued by Neltharion, Sarkareth agreed to assist the rest of the dracthyr against the Primalists.

Froststone Vault

Lore Playthrough
As the dracthyr prepared to face the Primalists en masse, they were joined by two black dragons who had been observing them from above.
Ebyssian and Wrathion call for a joint effort against the Primalists to prevent them from releasing a powerful entity from an ancient prison within the Froststone Vault.
You and the combined forces of all five weyrns of the dracthyr and two black dragons attempted to hold your ground against the Primalists at Froststone Vault.
In the end, their numbers proved too great.
Kurog Grimtotem, Grand Summoner of the Primalists, was able to gain access to the Vault and release the being within:
Raszageth, the Storm-Eater.

Wrath of the Storm-Eater

Lore Playthrough
Freed from her long captivity, Raszageth the Storm-Eater unleashes a violent tempest that threatens the entire Reach.
You and your allies have no choice but to retreat before her wrath.
The release of Raszageth is felt through the world, drawing forth Nozdormu, the dragon Aspect of Time.
With his magic, the dracthyr are provided the cover they need to escape the Forbidden Reach, each weyrn scattering in different directions, to different continents, with different intentions.

The Dark Talons - Horde Only

Lore Playthrough
Your weyrn, the Dark Talons, led by Scalecommander Cindrethresh, followed Ebyssian to Kalimdor where you would be able to warn the peoples of the Horde of the coming storm.
Upon meeting with some of the leaders of the Horde, you learn that an expedition is being mounted to the Dragon Isles.
The dracthyr have volunteered to assist the Horde in their expedition, partially to learn more of this new group, but also to gain answers for their own people as to their history and origins.

The Obsidian Warders - Alliance Only

Lore Playthrough
Your weyrn, the Obsidian Warders, led by Scalecommander Azurathel, followed Wrathion to the Eastern Kingdoms. It is your duty to warn the members of the Alliance about the coming storm.
Upon meeting with some of the leaders of the Alliance, you learn that an expedition is being mounted to the Dragon Isles.
The dracthyr have volunteered to assist the Alliance in their expedition, partially to learn more about these potential allies, but also to gain answers about their own history and origins.

If you're looking for the tuskarr settlement and the weathered watcher, the marks on the map are incorrect. Both are directly west of the respective marks with the tuskarr village being where you can see the little piers on the map and the watcher directly north of it.
