The Inscriptions
Mathematically speaking, the Aldor's inscription Greater Inscription of Warding totals slightly more raw avoidance at 1.30% avoidance, while the Scryers' Greater Inscription of the Knight provides 1.28% avoidance. This minuscule difference, at the scale of your entire gear set, is only a 0.06% difference in total mitigation value, which is to say negligible and irrelevant.
Math aside, it is worth mentioning that more defense can help facilitate your gearing process early on in Phase 1. This can be a good argument for choosing the Scryers, as you replace a lot of gear fast and have to adjust your crit immunity constantly.

The Necklace
The Shattered Sun Offensive tank necklace, Shattered Sun Pendant of Resolve, available in Phase 5 once you are exalted with this new faction, comes in two versions based on your chosen Shattrath faction. The Aldor version has a +100 dodge rating proc (+5.28% dodge) and the Scryers version has a +100 expertise rating proc (-6.25% dodge/parry).
While the Aldor necklace may look like the more survival-oriented choice at first glance, the Scryers version is in fact both the best of the two for threat by a landslide but also for damage mitigation thanks to the additional expertise reducing your chances to parry haste bosses, thus resulting in higher survivability than the dodge proc.

Many tanks for whom Gruul's shield wouldn't drop were using the s2 glad shield back in 2007/8. More astute players back then had access to pretty much the same info that all players do now (it's just way easier to find these days). More armor, crit immunity via resil, high stam, and decent block value were just as appealing to tanks back then as they are now.

I'm not sure why block rating is talked about as being a dead or bad stat - it's not a bad stat IF you understand what you are doing with it.

Firstly, on fast hitting bosses such as prince where your 2 shield block charges get eaten quickly, block rating reduces your chance to be crushed point for point cheaper than any other stat.
Secondly, trash. I know most people are hyper-focused on boss fights but let's get real, you got to kill the trash before you get to the boss. Also trash is where you are most likely to wipe because 1) your shield block is getting both charges taken out quick from multiple mobs and 2) your healer/dpsers snuck away to pee making things harder than they need to be. Shield block rating to the rescue!
Next, the higher your total avoidance, the less chance you have to be crushed. This helps protect you from human error (oops I forgot to hit shield block for a second, or I didn't have enough rage to hit shield block, etc.). We all like to pretend that we are as good as what spreadsheets and sims tell us we are, but at some point everyone makes mistakes and plays imperfectly. We're not robots.
Finally, uncritable/defense cap. Most people don't realize, a naked properly talented level 70 prot warrior with a shield and shield block up is uncrittable and uncrushable. The more avoidance in any form that you stack, the lower your chance of being crit and the lower chance you have of being crushed. You can use block rating to mitigate the risk of crits in your gear while having less than 490 defense. Now let me give a strong disclaimer here, I would not recommend gearing like this for everyone, but this gives you options when the gear you want to wear lowers your defense below 490. It also gives you more flexibility when you want to use more threat gear.
Honorable mention to the meme gearing sets for soloing stuff

TLDR; yes, there are better stats out there than block rating, but it is by far neither a dead nor bad stat. It's a tool in the tanks toolbox to use when the situation calls for it.

I agree with most of this guide but, again, I still do not see the point in gearing primarily for threat and then using a 18stam meta over 12agi+3%crit. That said, I also disagree with not using an impale build (17/3/41). This seems a little backwards to me (esp when wearing dps/pvp gear and running with a decent crit%). Not only do you get a noticeable dps boost while tanking, it allows you to do more dps when in fury gear while solo grinding or dpsing a boss/instance you aren't tanking. Even if dropping 2p in vit over sm, the hp loss very small. The one boss where it may be best for some tanks to use 18stam meta is Kael (if struggling).

Other than that, the overall displayed gearset is still pretty good. Here are some builds I made myself (that do not require pvp gear) which I believe are more effective in specific scenarios:

EDIT: I did not notice the multiple versions of the gearset this time around. For boss tanking, the first 2 are really great. For some reason I never even considered using the KT dps cape, but I guess if I'm gonna try for the vashj belt then going for that is no different :] . Pretty much spot-on for armor (for a 'universal' late-phase raiding set), although I still definitely like using the crit meta over 18stam, and oftentimes even the imp/dw build when considering absolute end-of-tier BiS sets (which you won't have until everything is on lolfarm for your guild anyway). I'd obv swap back once progressing into t6, though. But this is definitely the best of all the classic prot warr gear guides. I tried and it's very hard to try and come up with something better for a high EH, threat-focused boss tanking set.

-- Again, the crit meta is what I question when using a FINALIZED gearset that's tailored very much towards tps (and only obtainable after clearing, and farming, the entire tier). You can go either way, but when you're sitting at 20k buffed hp vs bosses like lurker, leotheras, and void reaver, that's pretty much a no-brainer. If you're going to gear primarily for threat (with 25-30% raidbuffed crit etc.) then 12agi+3%crit makes a hell of a lot more sense than 18stam. Impale/DW is another change that would net better results when swapping in even more threat gear once everything is on farm (dps trinkets , etc.), and also helps very much when dpsing in fury gear while still in prot spec. It's sad that this post will be downvoted strictly on the grounds that I disagreed with something from the fight club discord. A lot of new classic players are so gung-ho about their "bis lists"... If you're a tank, use your noggin. We aren't like dps. Swapping gear around is something you SHOULD be doing depending on the situation. There is no perfect sim, sheet, algorithm that is going to find a set that's perfect in all scenarios.

There is a contradiction the P2 BiS gem on the legs and the Gem section.
It is suggested using a Shifting Nightseye or Shifting Tanzanite, but in 7.0 Enchants & Gems it is written:

Red Sockets: Shifting Nightseye
This purple gem is worth using to activate a red socket bonus of +4 Stamina or more. Any bonus worse than that is not worth using a purple gem over a pure stamina gem.

Is the gem recommendation outdated in the Gem & enchants section or is the red gem suggested in the Destroyer Legs inaccurate with regards of the Gem guide?
