Obtain Scrap - You can do this by finding Pile of Rusted Scrap throughout Khaz Algar or by turning Reagents into Scrap through Pilfer Through Parts.

Gain Prototypes - With the Scrap you have collected, you can Scour Through Scrap. This ability has a chance to give you a Prototype. You can use this Prototype and it will reward you with its recipe.

Collect Notes - To obtain the higher-end recipes, you will need to disassemble Prototypes using Disassemble Invention. This will reward you with Hastily Scrawled Notes.

Choose a Recipe - Once you have 15x Hastily Scrawled Notes, you will be able to pick a new recipe to learn. The recipes that you can choose from are determined by your current Specialization.

Profession Equipment: Profession Equipment is found through the Discovery system after you specialize in Profession Gear.

Guns/Bracers/Goggles: P.0.W. x2 is unlocked through Specializations. Goggles and Bracers can be found through the Discovery system after you specialize in Goggles or Bracers.

Toys/Explosives: While this might not be the cheapest method, Engineers can mass-craft Toys or Explosives like the Filmless Camera, all the way to 100/100.

I am really interested in Engineering if only to throw myself a curveball. But not having gotten into TWW yet (too many reasons to mention) I don't quite get where you begin your new character (or, if using an existing character -- I have a L32 Dwarf I'd like to use) Specifically in Khaz Algar (that's probably a dumb question)? I ask this because I have rarely if ever encountered the materials required, so want to be sure I'm looking in the generally correct place. And I'm assuming that you can't get recipes from a trainer until you hit L5. Any other things to know when starting an Engineer for the first time in my journeys thru Azeroth? All hints, suggestions, insights and advice will be warmly welcomed.

The problem with using Invent to gain skill points is that it requires 25 scrap
per 2 point skillup. BUT if you have a lot of appropriate scrap from earlier ex
-pacs or have a lot of mats to make new scrapable items and aren't in a huge
hurry, it's a viable way to go.

Many of your recipe discoveries will come via Scour Through Scrap, using Prototypes, and reading Comprehensibly Organized Ideas. Scour Through Scrap will also be the primary method of obtaining Prototypes and Comprehensibly Organized Ideas.

Recommendations for getting started:

Obtain several hundred serevite bolts, laestrite bolts, or other cost-effective engineering parts.
Any 5 of the same engineering part from any expansion will do; focus on cost-effectiveness!
Bismuth bolts are not recommended; save your bismuth for actual item crafts!
Spend many minutes pilfering through your many bolts for Pile of Rusted Scrap.
Scour through your rusted scrap to obtain prototypes and learn core recipes.
Invent, Disassemble, and all Parts recipes (except Bottled Brilliance) are learned via Scour.
The odds of obtaining a prototype appear to be roughly 1/5.
Disassemble may be learned via Invent instead of Scour. If you've received prototypes but don't have Disassemble yet, try using Invent.
Disassemble any prototypes discovered for Hastily Scrawled Notes and to recover a substantial amount of scrap.
Using a prototype instead of disassembling it will teach the recipe for that item and remove the recipe from the pool of possible prototypes. (No scrap will be refunded.)
! Warning ! Learning all prototype recipes will cause Scour to give Hastily Scrawled Notes directly, eliminating the ability to get a Scrap refund via Disassemble! For resource efficiency, avoid learning all 14 prototype recipes until all desired recipes from Notes are learned.
Convert Hastily Scrawled Notes x15 into Comprehensibly Organized Ideas.
Use the Comprehensibly Organized Ideas and select one of the 3 random unlearned recipes to learn.
Repeat until all desired recipes are learned.
Once all possible recipes are learned from Comprehensibly Organized Ideas, Legibly Scribbled Notes (warbound) will be obtained instead of Hastily Scrawled Notes (soulbound). Make sure to send these to an alt before combining them!

Once Invent has been learned, it can be used once per day to guarantee crafting a prototype for Pile of Rusted Scrap x25.
