Why is Skinning Useful in Shadowlands?

Unlike the other professions, you are not dependent on finding specific nodes for gathering. You literally make your own nodes wherever you hunt Beasts.

Skinning creates necessary materials primarily for Leatherworking. There is a shorter list of ingredients you need to gather in Shadowlands than for previous expansions.

Skinning is practically found money! Other players who can't skin leave corpses lying around that you can skin without having to go through the bother of the farming. Just be sure they have left the corpse before you start skinning; it's rude to skin out from another skinner's nose.

Shadowlands Gathering is a Glove Enchant made by Enchanters that increases gathering speed for Herbalism, Skinning, and Mining. This is a very low level enchant in Shadowlands, and since the components are inexpensive, likely you will find many Enchanters making these for skill.

Shadowlands Leather Uses

Desolate Leather is used as the base ingredient for all green- and blue-quality Leather armor and weapons, all Umbrahide Leather and Boneshatter Mail Legendary base pieces, the four zone leathers, Purified Leather, Necrotic Leather, Unseelie Leather, and Sinful Leather. It's also used to create Novice Crafter's Mark, Crafter's Mark I, Desolate Armor Kit, Desolate Leather Barding, Loosened Belt,

Callous Hide is used to create the blue-quality Leather armors (iLevel 165), Comfortable Rider's Barding, Crafter's Mark II and Crafter's Mark III. You can also combine 10 of these together to create Heavy Callous Hide. Lastly, it's used by Engineers to create Grounded Ectoplasmic Specs.

Pallid Bone - is used to in the recipes for green- and blue-quality Leather and Mail armor and weapons, all Boneshatter Mail Legendary base pieces, Drums of Deathly Ferocity, Loosened Belt, and the four zone leathers, Purified Leather, Necrotic Leather, Unseelie Leather, and Sinful Leather.

Leveling Skinning in Shadowlands

In today's world of scaling, you don't have to worry about where to level skinning, or a skinned creature being out of range of your ability. Leveling skinning is simply a matter of killing skinnable beasts. There is no tooltip telling you whether a Beast is skinnable or not (there's a problem with this in regard to Spiders that will be discussed shortly) so you will just need to experiment and learn. There is no "best" mob to target; just find large groups of skinnable mobs and go from there.

Where to Farm Leather in Shadowlands

Unlike the other gathering professions (Herbalism, Mining, and Fishing), there are no zone-specific ingredients you can gather directly with Skinning. All six gathered items can be found in any of the zones.

What doesn't seem matter is where or what you skin.

What does matter is skinning level.

The easiest zones for skinning are Bastion and Ardenweald, which also happen to be great zones for herbalism, mining, and fishing, so they're tops on my list for farming zones overall. Both zones have large areas full of skinnable beasts, many of which are Neutral and won't attack until you do. Don't forget that most Moths and Insects are skinnable too!

Maldraxxus has some pockets with decent skinning farming, but be warned that unlike in other zones, many of the Spiders here are not skinnable. Hounds are skinnable but Gargons are not. Bugs will be your friends. Maldraxxus is dominated by humanoids and aberrations, so Beasts make up only a minority of the zone population.

The bulk of Revendreth's skinning happens in the lower middle half of the zone, south of Castle Nathria between Wanecrypt Hill and Darkhaven. Most of your targets will be Bears, Bats, and some Hounds. Avoid the towns because, although there are some skinnable Hounds you can find, many are actually unskinnable Gargons.

However, since skinning is not zone specific, stick to either Bastion or Ardenweald for concentrating Skinning farming.

Shadowlands Skinning World Quests

Each of the four Covenant zones has its own Skinning World Quests. You must have a Shadowlands Skinning skill of at least 25 for these to show up. Completing one of these quests rewards +1 Skinning, experience, and 125 reputation with the local zone faction.

If you are doing the normal storyline, these quests will not be available until World Quests open at level 60. Characters leveling through Threads of Fate with the appropriate skill level can do these starting at level 50, after choosing their Covenant and picking their first questing area.

For this reason, if you are leveling through Threads of Fate, I strongly encourage doing what you need to do to push any Profession skills to 25 as soon as you can to take advantage of these easy skill points, experience, and credit toward your zone completions.

Under "Shadowlands Skinning Equipment" it says there are two items worth mentioning, but I only see the enchant listed. Was this just a copy paste error?

Should add to the guide that there apparently are Skinning Nodes now. At least in Maldraxxus, there are. I randomly noticed one while doing story progression, and I can't remember for the life of me. Kind of a big fleshknot, though.

Edit: It's called Ground Wart.
Would be nice if Skinners could get tracking for nodes like this, now.

You say the only thing that does matter is skinning level, why exactly? I've been dropping skinning every few days to disenchant all my old gear and then pick skinning back up again. Can't say I've noticed a drop in mats while it's levelling back up.

Why does Skinning have levels at all if I can skin level 60 mobs at 1 skill? Does higher skill increase the amount of leather gathered, or the drop rate of Callous Hide?

Edit: This is anecdotal, but I didn't skin any Callous Hide or Heavy Desolate Leather until 75 skill. As soon as I hit 75, I skinned 4 hides in a row, and shortly after a few Heavy Desolate Leather.

I don't understand how expansions work. Why do you specify "Shadowlands Skinning"? Why don't you just call it skinning? Do you have to actually be in the Shadowlands zone for these rules to apply? Can I be in Azeroth and the same skinning rules apply?
