Each spec gets a unique weapon - 36 weapons total (+1 Fishing Artifact, available to anyone). These are intended to be ultimate weapons for you, the hero.
Each artifact is acquired by completing a spec-specific quest that emphasizes your class' unique abilities and reveals more about important lore figures.
Your Artifact Weapon is your main weapon in Legion, there are no other weapons that will match its power.
Artifacts have different styles and color tints which are unlocked through various activities. You will be able to transmog your artifact to another appearance, but also transmog other weapons to look like your artifact in Battle for Azeroth.

There are 36 total Artifact weapons in Legion - one for each spec in the game. Below are summary details on each artifact weapon.
An ancient Legion axe forged from a metal that drains its victims' vital energies. The soul of its original creator is trapped within and cursed with unending hunger. For more than a thousand years, an old and cunning mo'arg has used the axe to butcher uprisings and consume the life force of the Legion's foes. Over its long and infamous history, the weapon has made its demonic bearer extraordinarily powerful.

In ages past, the dark titan, Sargeras, offered the mighty aldrachi people a place in his Burning Legion. Much later, a demon hunter willingly became the servant of Sargeras' lieutenant Kil'jaeden. Druid
artifacts have a unique property exclusive to Feral and Guardian specs, due to the fact that they shift into different forms for combat. Instead of a number of different weapon appearances, each of these specs has a variety of shapeshift models that correspond with various unlocked appearances.
This mystical artifact was created millennia ago from the Staff of Elune and a fang from the wolf demigod Goldrinn. The Scythe of Elune carries a long and unsettling history for druids: those who are not careful enough can easily be overwhelmed by Goldrinn's spirit, which infuses the scythe. Tied to the origin of the worgen on Azeroth, the scythe is said to possess untold lunar power for the druid with balance enough to keep control.

Long ago, as the titanic watcher Keeper Freya set out to populate the world with life, she placed one of the first seeds in Pandaria. From it grew Fu Zan, the first, and all of Pandaria's forests descended from it. Before populating the rest of Azeroth, Freya fashioned a walking stick for her travels from one of Fu Zan’s branches. Eventually Freya passed her staff to the Jade Serpent, Yu’lon, who later gave it to a uniquely clever hozen. The orc warlock Gul'dan had these daggers made for his personal assassin, Garona. The blades are said to drink blood and inflict traceless poison, leaving little sign of their grim work: the perfect tools for an assassin. She used them to carry out countless atrocities while under Gul'dan's control, including the murder of Stormwind's King Llane, whom she had befriended. Afterwards, in anguish, she asked a trusted ally, Meryl Winterstorm, to help her hide the blades away in the hope that they'd never have to be used again.

Your first Artifact Weapon can be acquired at level 10+.
Each class acquires their artifact through an introductory questline. This questline sends you to interact with major lore figures and requires you to use your offensive and utility abilities to get through the encounter. For example, traps are a big part of the Survival Hunter questline while Assassination Rogues have to navigate Stormwind City while stealthed.
At the end of each quest, you access your Class Order Hall and learn how to interact with your Artifact Forge and Order Hall Mission table. You can progress further on your class-specific Order Hall quests and missions, which is the subject of
another guide
!
Wowhead has videos of
many of the weapon questlines
on its YouTube channel.
Note that to access your Artifact Trait tree for the first time, you must interact with your Artifact Forge, and select your first (free) trait. As soon as you do this, the remainder of the tree will appear for you to select traits on.
Obtaining your Second, Third and Fourth Artifacts
Later, you can obtain Artifacts for all specs in your class (All 3 in most cases, 2 for
Demon Hunter
s, 4 in the case of
Druid
s) if you so choose.
To do so, you return to your Order Hall and pick up the quest for selecting a second artifact. At this point, you are sent on the questline to obtain your second Artifact.
After getting your second Artifact Weapon, you are then offered the quest to get your third (and for
Druid
, a fourth after that).
Notes
Each Artifact questline is tailored to your spec.
Healer questlines have you heal a party while being attacked.
Tank questlines have you tank enemies.
DPS questlines are fairly standard collect/rescue/kill quests.
You can switch specs during your Artifact questline - e.g. you can complete any DPS questline with your primary DPS spec, or you can complete a healer questline in DPS spec by killing everything before your party dies (although doing these in a different spec may prove harder rather than easier!).
When you have more than one Artifact Weapon, they are automatically equipped when you switch to the appropriate spec (you cannot equip an Artifact Weapon that is not for your spec).
If you need a temporary weapon while you are completing your Artifact Questline, your Order Hall Quartermaster sells some that you can use.
There is no way to destroy an Artifact Weapon - keep in mind that each Artifact you unlock will take a permanent bag slot.
Obtaining all Artifacts available to your class grants the achievement
Arsenal of Power
.

At Legion launch, each artifact has five distinctive styles available (a sixth not implementedat launch), and each style comes in four tints. There are different ways to unlock each appearance and tint.
Once a new appearance or tint is unlocked, it is available to be used at the Artifact Forge in your Class Order Hall.
Check out the
Wowhead Artifact Weapon Calculator
to see each skin in 3D.
Further Notes:
Other weapon appearances can be transmogged over your artifact weapon. This follows all pre-existing rules with regards to weapon types, etc.
Certain weapon appearances change the type of a weapon (e.g. the Titan's Reach Hidden Artifact appearance for
Titanstrike
changes it from a Gun to a Bow)
At launch, there will be 5 skins:
Classic Skin
: Order Hall related quests
Upgraded Skin
: Order Hall, Artifact, and Archaeology activities
Valorous Skin
: PvE-related progression
War-Torn Skin
: PvP-related progression (Prestige)
Hidden Skin
: Acquisition will vary by spec
The
“Challenge Weapon Appearance”
for each specialization is an additional skin that could have been obtained during Legion. See the section below for more information.
You MUST unlock an appearance (i.e. the “Main Tint”) before you can unlock the various other colour tints for that appearance (Source: Legion Developer Q & A,
Video
)
For example, for the Valorous appearance, you must complete the “Balance of Power” questline to unlock the main tint before other tints will be obtainable. Getting the achievement
Unleashed Monstrosities
will not provide you a new tint/appearance until you have completed “Balance of Power”.
All skins and appearances that you unlock are unlocked for ALL specs on your toon. However, unlocking a skin or appearance on one character will not unlock it account-wide – you must separately unlock it on other characters.
The exception to this rule is for
This Side Up
, which is an Account-wide achievement, and thus unlocks this tint for ALL characters on your account. Of course, as mentioned above, this tint will not be available until you unlock the Upgraded appearance first (Class Order Hall Campaign)

Art Interview on Appearances
We asked Art Director Chris Robinson several questions about artifact weapons.
.
Can you tell us about Artifact design? Style, variations, colors?
Similar to Order Halls, we wanted to hit the tone for the class and spec. A few were easy because they were established, but the new ones were more difficult since they weren't established. We had to come up with something that felt lore-comparable and helped answer the questions: what is the core class fantasy? What weapon feels like what you want your character to feel like? I play a rogue, so I used a lot of personal experience to get the feeling of what a rogue would want to pick up in their hand to use. Then with spec differentiation in the weapons we went on with further honing into that class fantasy.
What was it like to create a weapon from scratch when there's some well-known artifacts like Doomhammer and Ashbringer?
We start with a base artifact level, i.e. Ashbringer - this is what the player expectation is for an epic level artifact weapon. Using that as a reference, all weapons should feel comparable next to each other. The problem with that is there is no established lore for the new ones, which makes them harder to identify with. So the new weapons had to look above and beyond to feel equal to Ashbringer. The base visual levels for the new weapons were a bit more complicated than the established weapons to make them feel equally epic.
Another difficulty was Shaman. Doomhammer was difficult because it didn't feel right seeing two Doomhammers (as dual wield). A solution was to make one a magical magma hunter to avoid breaking fantasy and make it seem like we're just giving Doomhammers away.
We know classes are going to feel unique with artifacts - how well have you accomplished this and making each spec feel unique visually?
We are trying to make this a balance and it will always develop along with characters - artifacts being there early on took us into a more streamlined weapon design process. There are usually 550-750+ weapons, this time 240....so we had more time to make them more epic.
As we worked on armor sets, we used visual decisions from artifacts to layer them on top of armor sets. There are not spec-specific armor sets but we looked at all the artifacts from one class to utilize visual elements on armor. Provides a more cohesive vision.
With regards to Hidden Appearances, some of the acquisition sources for these are listed in the tabs below.
For weapon appearances that are drops,
current spec or loot specialization doesn’t matter
when farming these (i.e. a Protection
Paladin
appearance item can drop while your loot specialization is Retribution).
Most
Hidden Artifact Appearance items that are rare drops have bad luck protection implemented (as of Patch 7.1.5)
This means each time that the item does not drop for you, your chances of obtaining it go up progressively.
When unlocking tints for your Hidden Appearance, as of Patch 7.3 you can use ANY Artifact Appearance and ANY spec to work towards the requirements.
Note that as of Patch 7.1.5, bad luck protection has been implemented for most hidden weapon appearance items that are drops
This means that every time you do not get the drop needed, your chances for obtaining it will go up progressively.
For artifact appearance items/components that are drops from bosses, the following rules apply depending on the source.
World Bosses
These appearances are 100% guaranteed drops for any player of the appropriate class,
regardless of their spec or loot specialization
.
Unlike standard loot from World Bosses that appears in your bags, these appearances must be manually looted from the corpse of the boss.
Raid Bosses
These appearances are
not
guaranteed drops.
The item has a chance to drop if there are ANY members of the raid who are the appropriate
class
,
regardless of their spec or loot specialization
.
These items drop on LFR, Normal, Heroic or Mythic difficulties.
If the loot setting is Master Loot, the item acts like any other loot drop – the Master Looter determines who to assign the item to.
If the loot setting is Personal Loot, they have a chance to be looted from the boss like any other gear and can drop for ANY spec of the appropriate class.
Regardless of loot settings, (Master Loot or Personal Loot) these items can be traded to other members of the raid for up to 2 hours after it is obtained.
Dungeon Bosses
These appearances/components are
not
guaranteed drops.
The item has a chance to drop if there are ANY members of the party who are the appropriate
class
,
regardless of their spec or loot specialization
.
These items drop in Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Mythic+ difficulties.
If it drops, the item can be traded to another member in your party of the appropriate spec.
The specialization specific challenge appearances were available via a scenario during Legion. They are not obtainable anymore.
Obtaining this appearance requires a solo specialization challenge scenario.
These challenges are quite difficult, requiring mastery of your spec and abilities. If someone is sporting this appearance, you know they are a good player.
Each scenario involves defeating a boss/minions or protecting NPCs, depending on spec.
Attempting the solo challenge requires that you first Empower You weapon for the new 7.2 traits, and also requires that the
Mage Tower
Broken Shore building is active.
While the Mage Tower is active, the first attempt of the scenario each day is free. All subsequent attempts the same day cost 100
Nethershard
s each.
Once the scenario has been defeated, you cannot attempt it again on that character/specialization.
As of Patch 7.3, once you have unlocked the base Challenge Appearance, you can unlock the other tints using ANY Artifact Appearance and ANY spec.
Below is a chart with strategy guides for the Challenge Scenario for each spec, provided by Wowhead writers.

The quest chain is as follows:
A Falling Star
Bringer of the Light
Light's Charge
Completing these quests unlocks a tint for your Classic Artifact weapon skin.
A Falling Star
This quest is picked up from
Archmage Khadgar
in
Dalaran
, in the Violet Citadel. After this, you will take a flight path at Krasus Landing that takes you to
Suramar
.
Once you land, you will be on a beach, and you may notice an
Abandoned Ballista
or two, and a
Jandvik Banner
.
If you are level 40 or less, I would
ADVISE AGAINST
clicking the banner! This banner is a a Rare mob encounter, which spawns a few waves of mobs, after which
King Morgalash
spawns. This banner/mob encounter has
nothing to do with the quest
!
This is what you want to do
instead
:
Search the crash site
- head to , which is due east of the island. Swim down to find the area (Looks like a swirly spot in a crevice on the ocean floor)
*
Investigate the Cave
- The cave entrance is at .
*
Mysterious Lightbound Object
- kill
Yorg Murkmouth
in the cave, and loot
Mysterious Lightbound Object
.
*
Watch that you don't run out of breath!
After you return to
Dalaran
, you turn in the quest in the Chamber of the Guardian (take the port at the center of
Dalaran
).
Bringer of the Light
The completion of this quest is in spoiler tags, for those who want to figure it out and complete it themselves. I've listed what happens next, as well as tips for completing this quest.
Khadgar
opens up a portal to the Exodar, and taking it starts the scenario "In Defense of the Exodar". As with any scenario, you can right-click your portrait and "Leave Instance Group" (even if you are solo) to leave and start again.
Step 1 is to find the Prophet Velen in the Vault of the Lights. Just make your way to the area marked on the map, killing demons on the way. If you happen to aggro a bunch, just kite them to Velen, as they will be incinerated by the dome of light surrounding him.
Step 2 involves A) Rescuing 12 Terrified Exodar Citizens and B) Destroying 8 Fel Portals.
All of the portals are marked on the map, and there are many more portals than you will need scattered through the Exodar.
When doing this step, its best to skirt your way around edges of the rooms. If you stand in the middle of pathways, the stream of demons running towards Velen can easily aggro and overwhelm you! Find corners and alcoves that avoid the steady stream of mobs that spawn.
Beware of patrols, as there are groups of demons all over the place and its easy to get overrun.
Terrified Exodar Citizen
s are typically around the edges of rooms, corners, behind structures/boxes, in covered rooms, etc.
Some are children, so are smaller and easy to miss
They are marked on your minimap, so this a great way to track them down
Extra (Optional) Stuff:
BONUS QUEST
: There is an extra quest available from
Farseer Nobundo
at 44.8, 9.4 in the Crystal Hall. This grants some gear and XP; it involves surviving 3 waves of demons, then killing
Karzak the Impaler
after these waves. As a DPS class doing this, it was quite a challenge! Mobs spawn frequently, and you must rely on the NPCs to help (i.e. stay near them).
Farseer Nobundo
will also heal you.
When you are to face
Karzak the Impaler
, I would suggest saving all of your DPS cooldowns (or healing, for that matter) for this encounter. The NPCs tank him, so dying is not a concern; rather, if this takes to long, Nobundo will bite the dust and this quest will fail!
If you want to complete this optional quest, you
MUST
pick it up before completing the Step 2 objectives (Portals and Terrified Citizens) or else it will not be available!
There is an (optional) bonus objective active during the scenario (you'll see the objective progress bar). Completing it by killing demons will net you some gold and experience.
A rare spawn NPC (
Huk'roth the Huntmaster
) was found at in the Trader's Tier. He is surrounded by Felhounds, which can be killed in smaller groups to avoid being overwhelmed.
He drops
Order Resources
and
Huntmaster's Injector
Step 3 is to return to Velen, and allow him to examine the
Mysterious Lightbound Object
Step 4 is to escort Velen to the Seat of the Naaru
Step 5 involves defeating
High General Rakeesh
. There is a very interesting reveal that occurs through this - I won't say what it is though!
Other commenters stated that you can tag
High General Rakeesh
and let the NPCs kill him, but
doesn't
appear to work anymore - you have to fight him yourself. That being said, it seems they may have made this encounter more manageable, as the NPCs do help, and will heal you.
After this, simply use
Khadgar's Beacon
to return to Dalaran.
Light's Charge
After completing
Bringer of the Light
, you receive
Light's Charge
, which has you return
Light's Heart
to your Order Hall. At this point you unlock one of the tints for your Classic Artifact weapon skin (part of the criteria for
Fighting with Style: Classic
).

MMO Champion user
Azarakal
is presumably the first person to both discover and post the information on obtaining
Guise of the Deathwalker
, the item that unlocks the Deathwalker hidden appearance for Havoc
Demon Hunter
.
Below is the complete post by Azarakal, outlining the process (
Source
):
The first thing you'll need to do is obtain "
Candrael's Charm
" from a random drop – I assume it comes from
Suramar
guards, because that's where I got mine. No idea if that's the case.
*Has been confirmed to drop from a wide variety of mobs in
Suramar
(
see this thread
), and is most likely a zone-wide random drop*
Once you have that, you'll notice the gem has "C.T." engraved on it. This stands for "
Candrael Twinshadow
" If you go into the Felsoul Hold crater area in
Suramar
, there's a path visible on the map that runs west. Go up the incline and double-jump/glide along the rocks to get to the top of the cliffside. Follow it around to a large tree and you'll find
Candrael Twinshadow
, a Blood Elf Demon Hunter. She's by a large tree, some bird/porcupine mobs just before her.
If you show her the charm, her immediate reaction is to assume you're a thief and kick you off the side of the cliff - ya know, as you do. Her kick will send you straight at
Downfall
, a large felbat with around 10 million health. You may've noticed him floating around in the general questing area. There's "violent winds" around him which will keep you aloft. You basically can "swim" in the spiral around him, but can't go too high or low or else you will drop out of the area and will reset (you can go to
Candrael
to continue attempting it). After damaging him for a little bit,
Downfall
will fling you off in a direction. You basically need to stay afloat using
Glide
and fall back on top of him to get kicked up by his winds again.
From my attempts (took around 5-10 to realize this was a DH only encounter and I had to be creative) it seems like you need to cancel
Glide
once you get back to his winds or it'll be buggy and let you fall right through. He'll fling you around again randomly even when you get back into his "bubble" of wind.
Kill him and you get the . The good news is, it's cool. The bad news is, the graphic is bugged at the moment. I have a few 20 yard long polygons jutting out of me at the moment. Can't post any pictures.

On a daily basis, upon entering
The Dreamgrove
(
Druid
Order Hall), you have the chance to get a “screech” emote. Some days you will not get the emote, in which case check back the following day.
The emote will be one of the following, directing you to a portal in the Order Hall:
“You hear a strange feral screech coming from the Hinterlands portal.”
“You hear a strange feral screech coming from the Duskwood portal.”
“You hear a strange feral screech coming from the Feralas portal.”
Once you have received an emote, go through the appropriate portal, and you need to find an owlcat stone and click it.
This process must be repeated each day until you have touched stones from all 3 portals.
After the 3rd stone has been touched,
Ela'lothen
will spawn in the center of the Dreamway within the Order Hall.
While
targeting
Ela'lothen
and in Cat form
, use the /sit command.
Feather of the Moonspirit
, the Hidden Appearance item, will then appear in your bags.

Hidden Artifact Appearance:
Requirement:
Artifact Knowledge Level 4+
Writings of the End
unlocks the Tomekeeper's Spire hidden weapon appearance for
Light's Wrath
. Thus far, it appears it that you must collect 12 tomes from around the world and combine them to obtain
The Annals of Light and Shadow
, the precursor to the hidden appearance.
TIP #1
: For some of the locations below (i.e. in the Eastern Kingdoms) you can use the portals in
Dalaran
, in the Chamber of the Guardian (port in the middle of
Dalaran
) to get there quickly! This is noted below as well.
TIP #2
: If you have a friend who is an Outlaw
Rogue
who is willing to tag along, their
Find Treasure
will mark these tomes on the minimap.
Starting the hunt
Once you reach Artifact Knowledge Level 4, speak to
Archivist Inkforge
and state that you are interested to get the first tome. Only after this step is completed can you start searching for the other volumes!
There is a hidden weekly reset on some of the flag quests for these tomes. This means that if you do not search out all of the tomes within a singly weekly reset period, you may end up not getting credit for looting a tome (even though it may be in your bags!) and you can’t complete
The Annals of Light and Shadow
.
If you want to check all tomes to see if you have been credited with looting them, see the scripts at the end of this post.
The compiled list of locations for these tomes is below:
Dalaran/Class Order Hall
Netherlight Temple
(
Priest
Class Order Hall)
Speak to
Archivist Inkforge
- this starts the task of searching out all of the tomes.
Netherlight Temple
(
Priest

This tome spawns either on the table behind
Juvess the Duskwhisperer
, or on the table to the left behind the
Draenei Anchorite
.

Class Order Hall)
Behind
Meridelle Lightspark
(sells the Class Order Hall set), on the bottom shelf of the hanging bookshelf.
The Violet Citadel,
Dalaran
To the left as you enter the citadel stands
Archivist Elysiana
. Behind her, on the right bookshelf is one volume.
Broken Isles
Drop:
Inquisitor Ernstenbok
,
Stormheim
Rare vignette mob southwest of
Halls of Valor
in a cave (visible on the map), entrance at , at the base of the cliffs right by the water. You will see
Eye of Ernstenbok
mobs outside the cave (

).
Drop:
Artificer Lothaire
,
Suramar
Rare vignette mob in Moon Guard Stronghold in
Suramar
(northwest part of the zone) at (

).
Drop:
Chief Bitterbrine
,
Azsuna
Rare vignette mob just off the coast of
Azsuna
at , on the ship “Queen's Reprisal”. Nearest flight path is Shackles Den (
See Map
).
Bitterbrine
can be found below deck (which is underwater) towards the front of the ship.
Black Rook Hold
,
Val'sharah
Found in the 5-man dungeon
Black Rook Hold
. After defeating the first boss,
Amalgam of Souls
, you will enter the Map Room. On the left side of the room, on one of the tables, is the volume.
Northrend
New Hearthglen in
Dragonblight
, Northrend (
Take the portal to Wyrmrest Temple in the Chamber of the Guardian
)
In the church in New Hearthglen, entrance at . Turn left when entering, and go into the second room on the left (ground floor) – it is on top of the bookshelf (

).
This book has a
1-hour
respawn timer.
Eastern Kingdoms
Instructor Chillheart
’s Room (
Scholomance
,
Western Plaguelands
)
Enter the room, kill the trash on the right. The volume is on the sixth bookshelf from the right.
Flameweaver Koegler
’s Room (
Scarlet Halls
,
Tirisfal Glades
)
Enter the room, kill
Flameweaver Koegler
. On the left side of the room find the table with the 3-pronged candelabra. The volume is on the bench between the table and the bookshelf.
Karazhan
,
Deadwind Pass
(
Take the portal to Karazhan in the Chamber of the Guardian
)
Note that this is the OLD
Karazhan
, not the revamped
Return to Karazhan
After killing
The Curator
, head down the ramp until you enter the Guardian’s Library. Instead of taking the ramp here to the left, jump off to the right and head into the side alcove that is immediately there. In the alcove, there will be 3 bookshelves at the very end (far wall) of the alcove, with a purple book tapestry (wall hanging) above them. On the bottom shelf of the leftmost bookshelf is the volume (
See map
).
In-game Scripts
The following in-game scripts can be copied and pasted into chat. If a script returns “True”, you have credit for that tome – if “False”, you do not have credit for whatever reason (even though you may have that tome in your bags). To fix this, simply delete the tomes that are not granting credit from your bags, then go and re-loot them from the appropriate location.
If all else fails, you can restart the hunt by speaking to
Archivist Inkforge
again.

Abdomari
for compiling the scripts.

Hidden Artifact Appearance:
Requirement:
Artifact Knowledge Level 4+
The Cypher of Broken Bone
, which unlocks the hidden Bonebreaker appearance for
The Kingslayers
, drops from various Rare spawns in the Dalaran Underbelly.
There are a number of mini-bosses that spawn randomly in the Underbelly. Some of these need to be tanked, but others don't hit hard at all and don't need to be. The bosses spawn fairly frequently, and at peak times there can be sometimes more than one active (and they can spawn back-to-back) –
but they only spawn when the guards are at their post (i.e. free-for-all PvP is not active)
. These bosses can be engaged even when a hired bodyguard is active.
Some of these mini-bosses are:
Crazed Mage
- A fire mage; health scales.
Thieving Scoundrel
- A rogue-like NPC; about 15.5 million health at baseline, health scales
Xullorax
- A giant demon; about 15.5 million health at baseline, health scales
Splint
- A large rat - by far the most commonly spawning boss mob. Has about 15.5 million health at baseline, with scaling health. Clearly a reference to
Splinter
, a character from
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
!
Mana Seeper
- A mana fiend; health scales
Screek
- A giant bat; health scales
Segacedi
- A large shark that spawns in the waters around the Black Market; health scales

Tome of Otherworldly Venoms
, which unlocks the Venombite hidden appearance, is obtained via the Mists of Pandaria
Troves of the Thunder King
treasure scenario. An Order Hall Upgrade in
Chamber of Shadows
(the
Rogue
Order Hall) can help you access this scenario.
When
The Vault
Tier 2 Order Hall Upgrade is selected, you sometimes obtain a
Vault Ticket
on successful completion of an Order Hall mission. This gives you access to the Uncrowned Vault within the
Chamber of Shadows
, when turned into
Marin Noggenfogger
.
Marin Noggenfogger's Lucky Coin
, obtained via pickpocketing in the Broken Isles, will also give you access to the Uncrowned Vault.
Training
The Vault
costs 500
Order Resources
; switching to it if you selected the other upgrade costs 2000
Order Resources
.
Within the Uncrowned Vault, you can find a Satchel of Keys, apparently visible on a pillar within the vault. Note that this bundle of keys is
not always there when you get access to the vault.
This contains

(Large Treasure Chests) – 20% drop rate
Mogu Treasure Chest
(Small Treasure Chests) – 12% drop rate
Dropped by
Skumblade Pillager
who will spawn from treasure chests in the second room. When spawning, they will stun you and attempt to escape before being killed. Pre-emptive CC (e.g.
Frost Rune Trap
, which can be purchased in the initial preparation room of the scenario for
Elder Charm of Good Fortune
) can ensure he doesn’t get too far away. 100% drop rate for
Burial Trove Key
.
Dropped by
God-Hulk Gulkan
at the very end of the scenario (if you reach there before time is up). 100% drop rate for
Burial Trove Key
.
Rewarded by
Tenwu of the Red Smoke
at the very end of the scenario. If you reach him before the timer is up and speak to him to end the scenario, you get an extra
Burial Trove Key
.
Use the
Burial Trove Key
s to open the
Lei Shen's Burial Trove
s at the rest area
after completing the scenario
. These chests have a chance to contain
Tome of Otherworldly Venoms
, which unlocks the hidden appearance!

Hidden Artifact Appearance:
Requirement:
Artifact Knowledge Level 5+
Essence of the Executioner
, which unlocks the Fate's End hidden appearance, is obtained through a quest.
First, you need to get your hands on
Grimoire of the First Necrolyte
, which is a drop from ANY eredar mob in the Broken Isles (e.g.
Eredar Supplicant
s in Faronaar,
Azsuna
, west of Illidari Stand).
Next, you can begin the quest –
The Grimoire of the First Necrolyte
. This quest requires that you obtain 13
Skull of the Executed
from “powerful champions” in the Broken Isles – namely the mobs that you kill for the
Rare Elite
World Quests (marked with a Blue Dragon on your Order Hall map). These elites typically require 3-5+ people to kill.
The skulls will be granted as bonus loot when completing an appropriate Rare Elite World Quest (i.e. you only get them when
completing the World Quest
, they do not drop from the mob itself).
The skulls cannot be obtained from smaller rare mob World Quests.
Once you have obtained the 13 skulls, which may take a number of days, you use them at the
Executioner's Altar
in
Deadwind Pass
to summon
Sataiel
. This can be found in the crypts under Karazhan.
Sataiel
drops
Essence of the Executioner
when defeated.

Visage of the First Wakener
, which unlocks the hidden Thal'kiel's Visage appearance for
Skull of the Man'ari

grey-quality
Eredar heads in the Broken Isles.
After reaching Artifact Knowledge level 4, the heads can rarely drop from any Eredar mob in the Broken isles.
The 6 heads will always drop in the following order (the 6th drop will be
Visage of the First Wakener
):
Damaged Eredar Head
Deformed Eredar Head
Malformed Eredar Head
Deficient Eredar Head
Nearly Satisfactory Eredar Head

Hidden Artifact Appearance:
Requirement:
Artifact Knowledge Level 5+
Burning Plate of the Worldbreaker
, which unlocks the Last Breath of the Worldbreaker hidden appearance, is obtained from Neltharion’s Vault, a cavern in Highmountain (NOT the
Neltharion's Lair
dungeon). The entrance to this cave is at . After passing through the cave, you can exit through another way to reach the Obsidian Overlook flightpath (which makes accessing this cave in the future much easier!).
The following steps must be followed to obtain this appearance:
Read the "Saga of the Valarjar" tablet, a large object behind
Fjornson Stonecarver
, the Artifact Knowledge NPC in your Order Hall.
Ensure you are in Protection specialization.
Head to the entrance of Neltharion's Vault as outlined above and walk into the cave until the zone changes to Neltharion's Vault.
If you see the emote
"You hear a strange roar from the cavern ahead"
, that indicates that the hidden appearance item has spawned in the cave. Search the gold piles in the cave for the lootable item,
Burning Plate of the Worldbreaker
.
If the above emote does not appear, come back another day and try again. There is a chance each day for the appearance to spawn.

Artifacts in Legion have various hidden effects. When asked about them on the Legion Theorycrafting Thread, Blizzard stayed mysterious on the topic, so it's up to the players to discover them!
Watcher
1. Are these effects meant to be hidden, or is there simply a missing spell ID, artifact trait, etc?
2. If not, what actually enables them? Are they baseline, tied to the equipped artifact, different per spec, and so on?
1) The former. When dealing with things as powerful as some of the artifacts players will be acquiring in Legion, sometimes mysterious things happen. Contrary to the spirit of the thread, I know. But there you have it.
2) See question 1.
There is an outline of some of the hidden Artifact Weapon effects (when known) on each weapon summary (under
"Artifacts by Spec"
above). These are hidden with spoiler tags - in case you want to try and discover them for yourself!
Please note that some of the effects have been datamined and are listed in this guide, but may not have been implemented in-game.
Some of the effects that have been discovered are simply cosmetic (
Minding the Tides
), while others have significant flavour and can be quite helpful, particularly when in the open world/soloing (
Gaze of the Val'kyr
,
Call to the Eagles
).
Additionally, some of the weapons are sentient (
Aluneth
,
Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire
,
Skull of the Man'ari
), and will speak to you at various times as you adventure.

How many slots does my Artifact Weapon take in my bags?
Many 2-handers would obviously take a single bag slot. What is interesting, however, is that two-part weapons (e.g.
Fist Weapon
+
Shield
) take only a single bag slot, saving some space (especially with Artifacts for multiple specs).
Can I transmog my Artifact Weapon?
You
CAN
transmog other appearances onto your Artifact Weapon, and you will also be able to transmog your Artifact Weapon appearance onto other weapons in Battle for Azeroth.
Also note that you can transmog two part Artifacts (Fist Weapon + Shield, Off-hand + Dagger, etc.) separately.
What if I chose the wrong Artifact Weapon, vendored my old weapons and want to level in a different spec before obtaining all my artifact weapons?
Your class Order Hall Quartermaster sells weapons/off-hands/shields for 100g each. These can serve as replacements if you need them before you unlock all of your class Artifact Weapons.
Can I destroy an Artifact Weapon?
Once you complete an Artifact questline and obtain that weapon, you cannot destroy it or vendor it. As such, you will have an occupied bag slot per extra Artifact Weapon you obtain.
Is there a way to see how developed someone else's artifact is?
In the default UI, there is no way to see how much someone has developed their Artifact (e.g. number of traits, etc.), apart from the item level of their weapon. That being said, third party sites like
WoW Progress
can track number of unlocked traits and Artifact Power.
Will we be able to use Artifact models we have unlocked for transmog after Legion is over?
The plan is to allow these models to be used after Legion (into the next expansion). This is still something they are working on, and there will be more information forthcoming.
This includes the new variations of the
Druid
Cat form and Bear form.

Will we be able to unlock Artifact Weapon appearances after Legion is over?
The current plan is to allow all Artifact appearances to be unlocked after Legion (except for the
A Challenging Look
Mage Tower Challenge Appearance, both of which will be unavailable after Legion).
This includes the War-Torn (Prestige) appearance and all tints, which
WILL
be obtainable after Legion, although the manner in which they are earned may change.
In addition, the various tints for
A Challenging Look
Mage Tower Challenge Appearance will be unlockable after Legion, as long as you have unlocked the
base appearance
before Legion is over.

)
Do they plan on adding more Artifact skins in 7.3 or future patches?
They're done with that. The last set was done in 7.2 and it's time to take your powered up artifact to the Legion in 7.3.

Will Artifacts be usable in PvP?
Artifacts and Artifact effects will be enabled in all PvP situations, including instanced and rated PvP. Note that the effect of the
Concordance of the Legionfall
proc is also active in PvP, but is reduced by 50%.
In addition, only the Tier 1 Netherlight Crucible effect – the item level increase - will be active in instanced PvP. Tier 2 and Tier 3 traits will not be active.
Legion PvP Preview (
Source
)
In Legion, as soon as you zone into a PvP instance, the stats on your gear will be nullified, and you'll be given a pre-determined set of stats that's uniquely configured for your specialization. Furthermore, any set bonuses, enchants, Legendary bonuses, or trinket effects will be deactivated (
although your Artifact and its related Artifact Powers will remain active
).
Where can I get my Artifact Weapon hidden appearance?
The method for obtaining your hidden Artifact Weapon appearance varies drastically from weapon to weapon. This can include being sold by a vendor, dropped by a boss, rewarded from a questline, looted from a chest, and much more! There are some hidden appearances for which the acquisition is thus far unknown.
The
Artifact Appearances
section above outlines many of the methods for obtaining your hidden skin – simply scroll to the bottom of the appearance chart for that spec.
Do I need to display my Hidden Skin to unlock the additional tints?
You need to have your hidden skin active and selected at your Artifact Forge to earn credit towards alternate tints. That being said, you CAN transmog over the hidden skin and still earn credit towards the tints!
