Pet Specializations
Ferocity: Damage focused. Used primarily inside of dungeons and raids.
Cunning: Utility focused. Used primarily in PvP.
Tenacity: Tank focused. Used primarily for soloing and leveling.
Be on the lookout for
The Apex Predator's Claw
legendary, which gives you some benefits from all 3 pet specializations at the same time.
Updates in Legion
Beast Mastery still holds exclusive rights to exotic beasts in Legion. Since party and raid stat buffs have been removed, many pets no longer have any special abilities. Pets that had non-buff specials such as the
Turtle
family's
Shell Shield
remain intact.
Due to the loss of the old Spirit Bond talent and the Glyph of Mending, pet healing and general survivability has taken a bit of a dive. When out soloing in the world, you may find the need to sacrifice some damage and spec your pet into Tenacity to increase its survivability. You will want to be proactive with keeping
Mend Pet
up at all times for soloing and leveling.
New Pet Families
Scalehide
: This includes kodos, mushan, stegodons, and thunder lizards. They have no special ability.
Oxen
: This includes yaks, oxen, and musken. They have no special ability.
Mechanical
: Includes a wide variety of pets with unique taming challenges. Check out Wowhead's
Mechanical Hunter Pet Guide
.
5 Awesome New Pets in Legion
Thok the Bloodthirsty
: Yes, the dreaded dinosaur boss from
Siege of Orgrimmar
is now tameable. There is no trick to the tame other than getting to him. The easiest way to is to run the Underhold wing of LFR.
Lowland Manashell
: This new
Turtle
pet found in
Suramar
looks exactly like
Tortos
from
Throne of Thunder
. Not technically a rare mob, but can sometimes be hard to find.
Iron Juggernauts: One of the most unique taming challenges yet. Requires you to collect various materials in
Siege of Orgrimmar
that allow you to craft an
Iron Juggernaut
in one of four colors. See
here
for a complete guide.
Treble
and
Rush
: These Mechano Wolves are hunted down in
Highmountain
and
Azsuna
, respectively. You must look for their tracks (puddles of oil) on the ground, then use your Flare to reveal them and tame them.
Bulvinkel
: A rare spawn spirit moose found in
Stormheim
. You may need to do some long camping for this one.
Dual Wielding Pets as Beast Mastery
Upon reaching level 110,
Mimiron
will offer the quest
A New Invention
inside
Trueshot Lodge
(near the mission board). Completing it will award the
Essence Swapper
, which allows you to transform Hati into any pet you have tamed. After doing so, you are free to change your main pet to have two different pets. If you speak to Mimiron, he will give you an option to reset Hati back to his default appearance.
