While our other guide pages go into more individual detail, this simple starter guide covers all the basics in one place, whether you're a new Resto Shaman, a returning player to Shadowlands, hardcore, or casual alike, it's the best place to get a beginners overview on the class. Included are basic talent builds, simplified rotations, stats, legendary recommendations, and more to get you started as quickly as possible.

As a general foreword, none of the Covenants are actually unplayable or hinder you from your goals. If you really want to play a particular Covenant, chances are you can just go with it and be fine, even if you might have to play around its drawbacks. Try to have a go with all of the Covenant choices during levelling and build a picture for yourself, ideally heal a dungeon with each.

Restoration Shamans use the same talents for a lot of content, although a handful of talents stand out in particular areas. If you are still leveling or new,
Flash Flood
can be an easier to handle replacement for
Cloudburst Totem
. This talent build is primarily focused on raiding for players getting started with end game activities, but our Restoration Shaman Talent Guide goes into more detail for each talent, as well as providing specific builds for questing, Mythic+, and Raids.

Restoration Shaman Stat Priority
Restoration Shaman primarily favor Intellect through Item Level, followed by Critical Strike. Find out more about how stats work, including sample stat weights and scaling plots in the Stats Guide.
Unlike previous expansions, primary stats such as Intellect are much more important than they used to be, and secondary stats are close enough together that item level is usually more important factor when it comes to choosing gear. Find out more about how stats work in the Stats Guide.

Best Restoration Shaman Rotation
Healing does not follow a specific "rotation", but instead prioritizes spells depending on the situation, preempting and reacting to incoming damage. This section gives a general overview, but more optimizes, talent variations, and advanced tips can be found in the full Rotation Guide.
Riptide
on cooldown as much as possible. The charge system allows some wiggle room, allowing you to pool charges.
Healing Stream Totem
on cooldown as much as possible.
Healing Rain
if there are a few injured targets within a small area.
Chain Heal
to heal groups of people. This ability is expensive, try to not cast it too much.
Healing Surge
if a target is in immediate danger of dying.
Healing Wave
for efficient single target healing.
Try to use your DPS spells if there is nothing worthwhile to heal.
