Stormbringer is an extremely fast playstyle that rewards generating and spending Maelstrom Weapon as much as possible. It centers around Stormstrike, aiming to cycle spenders to reach Tempest, a supercharged version of Lightning Bolt that deals massive AoE damage. It has Static Accumulation and Supercharge procs to react to with each spender, and leans into Ascendance as its cooldown of choice, which allows you to rapid-fire spenders through Windstrike. This gives it a real "force of nature" vibe when playing, is the more burst oriented tree of the two, and definitely the stronger pick in Season 3.

Totemic is a bit more measured, rewarding adherence to a more clear cut priority system. It maintains Surging Totem to activate many of its effects, and instead is centered around Lava Lash. Additionally, Maelstrom Weapon spenders take more of a back seat, relying mostly on Elemental Blast to consume the Whirling Air effect, trigger Totemic Rebound and maintain Lightning Strikes. Its big mechanic to play around is Hot Hand, enabling both Splitstream and Earthsurge, which requires you to weave Lava Lash every other GCD while it's active. On top of all that, it has potent 30-second and 1-minute burst with Primordial Storm and Doom Winds. Unfortunately with Season 3's Tier Sets considered, while the gameplay loop is really fun, the numbers are really lacking compared to the field.

Impact of The War Within Season 3 Tier Set for Enhancement Shaman

The Season 3 Tier Sets come with a unique twist: each set provides a different set of bonuses depending on your chosen Hero Talent. For Stormbringer and Totemic, this has a massive impact - it changes build recommendations, some loadouts, and rotational gameplay all at once. As soon as you gain access to it, Stormbringer becomes the recommended talent choice at all times, and you can use the tabs below to check details on each set.

The Season 3 Tier Set affects Tempest and Ascendance for Stormbringer:

Howls of Channeled Fury

2-Set Bonus: Ascendance grants a charge of Tempest when activated, and every 8 times you trigger Awakening Storms, you also trigger Ascendance for 6 seconds.
4-Set Bonus: Your Nature damage is increased by 5%. Additionally, whenever you trigger Ascendance, your next 2 Tempest casts will trigger Storm's Eye. This deals heavy Nature damage to your target, and reduced damage to nearby enemies after a 1.5 second delay.

The Stormbringer bonus is exceptionally powerful, as any effect that leads to more Tempest casts always results in a large performance gain. Extra uptime from Ascendance is also extremely strong due to how powerful the cooldown is. These both lead to a compounding benefit that provides upward of a 25% increase when both bonuses are acquired, making it one of our strongest ever sets. Talent choices don't really change to accommodate it (though we drop Crash Lightning after losing the Season 2 set), but the playstyle shifts to make sure it avoids wasting Tempest stacks from the random 2-piece triggers.

The Season 3 Tier Set affects Primordial Storm for Totemic:

Howls of Channeled Fury

2-Set Bonus: After consuming all 3 Whirling Elements motes, your Surging Totem casts Primordial Storm at its location at 200% effectiveness.
4-Set Bonus: Each time you or your Surging Totem casts Primordial Storm, your next Lava Lash or Fire Nova cast will cast a second time at 150% effectiveness.

The Totemic is quite good, empowering the 30-second burst cycle further by providing an additional way to trigger Primordial Storm. These storms, however, are noticeably weaker than our own - they don't trigger imbues, benefit from (or generate) Maelstrom Weapon, nor are they buffed by totemic effects like Pulse Capacitor. It's still a good 2-piece, but not quite as great as it looks on the surface. The 4-piece on the other hand is extremely good, as the extra Lava Lash echoes trigger everything a regular one does - meaning additional Splitstream procs.

Unfortunately, the entire tuning situation for Totemic is a bit rough, and while the set clocks in at a solid 16%+ increase (much better than the Season 2 set), it struggles to keep up with the much stronger Stormbringer offering.

When to Replace the Enhancement Shaman Season 2 Set Bonus

If you still have access to the previous Gale Sovereign Season 2 set, this should be replaced immediately upon acquiring the new 2-piece bonus. This applies to both Hero Trees, but especially so for Stormbringer. Once you acquire this, it also strongly shifts the ideal builds toward that tree as well.

Depending on whether you are playing a Stormbringer or Totemic build, your stats shift very slightly on which stat is the one you're hunting for, and priorities remain roughly the same in AoE situations.
