Icecrown Citadel knocks on the door, Arthas is likely getting dressed like Santa, and a new Tier set is coming out. Looking at the names of the sets, they don't seem anything
special
- so I thought* it's probably a good idea to post some extensive explanation about the
last
Tier. Why? Because it is actually interesting from a Lore perspective.
Remember, back when Tier 9 was released, how a lot of people were excited about Alliance and Horde not only having different sets, but having those sets named after famous members of the respective faction and class? I don't know about you, but I was really excited to be a part of the lore on that level. And because of this inspiration, this blog was born - a compilation of relatively short summaries of all those heroes' and villains' stories. Read on!
*Not really. Read the note after the break.
Note
: Alright, I owe you all a big fat "SORRY, GUYS!
". I've been working on this blog for some few months now, and I've been promising you to finish and publish it almost since 3.1
The Secrets of Ulduar
came out. The truth is, I had about 60-70% of it done in less than a week after the patch hit the live servers... and then I stopped working. I kept finding (or other people found for me) project after project, and each one seemed more important than some Lore compilation everybody could find with a little reading on WoWWiki. Only recently did I get Queggy and Neutronimity to help me with the last... I think 4 entries (Varian from Neutronimity, and Gul'dan, Garrosh, and Nobundo from Queggy). It still took some time, but we got them down! I guess you can thank them for finishing a project I could not find time for.

Death Knight
Alliance
Thassarian
(
WoWWiki
)
Thassarian, much like his Horde counterpart, Koltira Deathweaver, is a death knight of great potential. He was also the first Death Knight to turn his back to the Lich King and rejoin the Alliance. His loyalty towards King Varian, and his honor make Thassarian a minority in the ranks of the undead lieutenants. Instead of turning brutal and savage, he held on his code of honor, even while he was in the grip of the Lich King. You can help him in this by completing
Frères dans la mort
, where he tasks you to save Koltira, a blood elf death knight, former enemy, and now "brother in death", as Thassarian puts it.
You can now find Thassarian directing most of the operations in Icecrown from the board of
Skybreaker
.
Horde
Koltira Deathweaver
(
WoWWiki
)
Koltira Deathweaver is Thassarian's equivalent in the Horde. He is a powerful Death Knight, likely the first one to rejoin the Horde. Unlike his Alliance equivalent, Koltira does not seem to cherish honor and innocence that much - take his
Au service du sang
for instance. And not only that, but he seems marked by the Lich King himself - all of the Death Knights who settled with Mograine are, but the Lich King seems to recognize Koltira personally. However quests like
Le pouvoir de détruire
give you a chance to enter the shadow realm and exterminate some of Koltira's inner tormentors.
Druid
Alliance
Malfurion Stormrage
(
WoWWiki
)
There is much to say about Shan'do Malfurion Stormrage. A night elf old enough to have lived during the Sundering, brother of the equally famous Illidan Stormrage, lover of Tyrande Whisperwind, disciple of the demi-god Cenarius, and likely the most powerful druid alive. The list of his achievements is barely starting however. He had a major role in stopping the Burning Legion from invading Azeroth 10,000 years ago. He also helped many of the night elves in their struggle against Queen Azshara, mad with hunger for power. Furion, as Tyrande prefers to call him, sleeps an eternal slumber ever since the War of the Ancients, inhabiting the Emerald Dream with a score of his druids, where they fight off the corruption of the Nightmare. He has been awaken only once in those 10,000 years, and only so he can help in yet another war against the Legion. But with the events in Cataclysm, it seems like he will roam the world of living once again, protecting Mount Hyjal and sacred tree.
Horde
Hamuul Runetotem
(
WoWWiki
)
Much less famous the his Alliance counterpart, Hamuul Runetotem is all but insignificant. He was trained and taught by Malfurion himself, who revealed many ancient secrets of the nature to the now old tauren. Some 20 years ago Hamuul became the first tauren to join the Cenarion Circle - an organization of druids, consisting only of night elves until then. Since then he has established himself as the most powerful druid among the tauren, and a valuable member of the Circle.
Now living in Thunder Bluff and rarely leaving the city, Hamuul is still an influential person. He is the oldest and strongest supporter of Cairne Bloodhoof, with whom the druid was a childhood friend; he was also good friend with Naralex, another powerful druid, now trapped in the Wailing Caverns, fighting off the corruption in the once beautiful place.
Hunter
Alliance
Vereesa Windrunner
(
WoWWiki
)
The younger of the Windrunner sisters, Vereesa is a hunter distinguished just as much as her older siblings. She fought in the Second and Third war, faced the horrors of the Scourge, battled orcs and dragons, met and fell in love with the human mage Rhonin, who is the current leader of Dalaran. She helped Rhonin in their first mission together - help that ultimately allowed Vereesa's future husband to assist his friend Korialstrasz (who is actually a red dragon!) in freeing the Aspect of Life, Alexstrasza the Life-binder herself, from orcish slavery. Not only that, but she was part of the mission in which Rhonin and Krasus destroyed Demon Soul, the artifact Deathwing used to control all non-black dragons... and send Deathwing in hiding.
It's worth noting that Vereesa is now a mother of twins, both believe to have incredible magical powers, being the sons of a high elf and a human mage. You can find the high elf in Dalaran's Violet Citadel, standing faithfully by her husband, helping in the city of mages' governing. She leads the Silver Covenant herself - the battle faction of high elves who oppose the acceptance of blood elves in Kirin Tor. Vereesa's hatred towards the blood elves is comparable only with her devotion to husband, family, and race.
Horde
Sylvanas Windrunner
(
WoWWiki
)
Sylvanas, the middle of the Windrunner sisters, is also the one to suffer the most... interesting of fates. While the younger Vereesa led the remaining high elven rangers and mages, and the older Alleria went off to Outland never to return with her beloved Tyralion, Sylvanas was taken by the Scourge while defending Quel'thalas. Her unbreakable defiance led Arthas to refuse her the peace of death - she was raised as a Banshee, a spirit able to possess bodies. But instead of granting her ignorance of her actions, Arthas allowed her to keep her mind and consciousness, while he controls her ethereal body completely. She was aware of all the pain and suffering she had caused to her people, while the young death knight used her as a weapon. This led to enormous self-hatred, but even greater hatred for Arthas and the Scourge. So when she finally broke free of the Lich King's control, she led all of the newly freed undead - the Forsaken. Lady Sylvanas, the Banshee Queen, is now the leader of the only force on Azeroth that lives - as loose as this term is here - only so they can take revenge on Arthas.
Despite her cold words, Sylvanas is not the monster she wishes the other races to believe she is. Players can complete
Le collier de la dame
, where they deliver a necklace once belonged to Alleria, to Sylvanas. The Dark Lady is angered by this action, pretending to not be affected, but the song she sings soon after indicates otherwise. Sylvanas is still an elf in her heart.
Mage
Alliance
Khadgar
(
WoWWiki
)
Khadgar, the last and one of the few of Medivh's apprentices, a young man aged beyond comprehension, whose name mean "Trust", and assistant of the Naaru. That's Khadgar in a nutshell, and even with this little, he's already a major Lore figure.
At the age of 17 Khadgar was sent by the mages of Kirin Tor to become an apprentice for Medivh - unquestionable the most powerful mage alive. Of course, the Kirin Tor wanted Khadgar to be a spy just as much as he was to be an apprentice. The "young Trust", as Medivh got to call him, disappointed his masters - he befriended the Guardian, keeping his secrets well hidden. It was the issue of honesty and trust that ruined both master's and apprentice's lives - Khadgar discovered that Sargeras controlled Medivh's body to a great extent, and ultimately helped the half-orc assassin Garona and Anduin Lothar to put an end to the Last Guardian. The fight aged the apprentice unnaturally, and ever since then he roams the world (two worlds actually, as he resides in Outland now and helps the Naaru there) as a teenager with white hair and beard.
Horde
Kael'thas Sunstrider
(
WoWWiki
)
Kael'thas is, in my opinion, one of the most brilliant characters in WoW. He was (I think it's almost safe to refer to him in past tense now...) a powerful mage, a prince whose father was killed and whose entire race was all but decimated by the person who was his rival for Jaina Proudmoore's heart.
Kael's history as a high elf is close to boring - he was mainly jealous of Arthas for winning Jaina while all three were in Dalaran. True enough, he was suspected to be a member of The Six - the council in secret that ruled Kirin Tor, but that's hardly relevant, except as an indication of his power and ambition. The interesting part comes when Arthas - now a death knight - destroys almost all of Quel'thalas. Kael, decimated by pain and desire for revenge, decides that
quel'dorei
(high elves) was no longer fitting for the remnants of his people - they were now
sin'dorei
(blood elves), and the purpose of their lives was to avenge their fallen brothers and sisters, making Arthas pay for blood with blood. From there on, Kael'thas served the humans under Garithos - and was betrayed. He made alliances with Lady Vashj, Lord Illidan, and ultimately - the Burning Legion. His hunger for magical energies, his desire to avenge his nation, and the addictive fel energy he has been absorbing drove Kael'thas almost mad. Little did it help that he failed to stop Arthas on his way to the Frozen Throne. Now the last member of the royal Sunstrider line lies dead near the precious Sunwell, because of which all of his troubles came to existence...
Paladin
Alliance
Turalyon
(
WoWWiki
)
One of my personal favorites, Turalyon was a powerful paladin and second-in-command in the Alliance army after the Second War, inferior only to Anduin Lothar. Despite the fact that he protected Lothar's body after he was killed by Orgrim Doomhammer, and then defeated the orc chieftain, Turalyon found little joy in his promotion to Supreme Commander of the Alliance armies - he blamed himself for Lothar's death. The fact that he was the youngest member of the original Order of the Silver Hand only made his burden of responsibility heavier.
Turalyon's incredible success on Azeroth during the Second War were hardly the only great deeds the young paladins can be credited for. Few years after the war he was handpicked by Terenas Menethil himself to join a mission on Draenor. The paladin, Khadgar, the ranged Alleria Windrunner, Danath Trollbane, and some soldiers were sent to what would soon become Outland to prevent a mad orc shaman from using the Skull of Gul'dan to open more dimensional rifts from Draenor to other worlds, and mainly - Azeroth. The mission was partially successful - Turalyon managed to assist Khadgar in closing the Dark Portal, saving Azeroth, but Draenor was ripped apart by the nether energies unleashed by the shaman/warlock. Ever since then the fate of Turalyon and Alleria - with whom the paladin has been having a love affair since the Second War - has been unknown.
Horde
Lady Liadrin
(
WoWWiki
)
Lady Liadrin was the first blood elf to become a paladin. She is now the matriarch of the Blood Knights - order of former blood elven warriors and priests, who now follow the Light on the path of the paladins. Originally Liadrin's and the other paladins' powers came from siphoning the Light from the Naaru M'uru. Later, when the Sunwell was restored, the Blood Knights were able to utilize the Light solely based on faith like the paladins of the Alliance, instead of forcing it into service.
The little I've said here probably doesn't do her much justice, but she is a significant figure in WoW's history. In a way, she and Velen started a new age in the world.
Priest
Alliance
Velen
(
WoWWiki
)
Prophet Velen, leader of the draenei on Azeroth (and the only "sane" draenei) is probably the oldest being alive on the planet. His age is around 25,000 years, and he can remember the time when he, Kil'jaeden, and Archimonde were not only the most powerful leaders of the original draenei race - the eredar, - but very good friends as well. When Sargeras and the Burning Legion offered power in exchange of service to the people we get to know as draenei, Kil'jaedan and Archimonde were swayed and became first lieutenants of the Legion; Velen however, aided by the Naaru, saw through Sargeras' illusion, saw that if he were to submit, his people would become vicious demons. So, again aided by the Naaru, he escaped his homeworld Argus, along with a number of his friends and loyal followers.
Ever since the the escape from Argus, Velen and the last remnants of the eredar race - the now called
draenei
, or "the exiled ones", have been roaming the Twisting Nether, running away from the Burning Legion, trying to hide from Kil'jaedan's hatred and Archimonde's determination. For a while they were able to live in Draenor, but the Legion found them there, forcing them to make a desperate run - to anywhere. The Naaru "spaceship" they used - The Exodar - barely got them to Azeroth, where it crashed close to Teldrassil and the night elven capital of Darnassus. There the dreanei were accepted in the Alliance, and Velen's ancient wisdom, combined with his ability to sometimes foresee the future, proved to be a vital addition to the pact of humans, dwarves, gnomes, and elves.
Horde
Zabra Hexx
(
WoWWiki
)
Zabra Hexx is much less famous, and certainly less powerful than his Alliance counterpart - Velen. However he is just as unique as the draenei prophet. Zabra is a troll who makes his appearance soon after the Scourge starts threatening Lordaeron, and Alexandors Mograine founds the original Scarlet Crusade. First the troll was discovered by the Ashbringer, inside the abandoned Scarlet Monastery. Mograine stopped Brigitte Abbendis from slaying the troll, confirming that Zabra Haxx was indeed connected to the Light - as the troll had stated earlier in their encounter.
The act of kindness proved very significant in the events following Alexandros' death. His youngest son, Darion, a relatively new member of the Argent Dawn, encounter the troll his father had saved a while ago. Zabra Hexx claimed to still feel the spirit of Darion's father through the Light, but the feeling had been somewhat... obscured. He complemented his words with a vision of a flying necropolis and its rough location in the Eastern Plaguelands. Darion was then able to find his father - now a death knight - free his soul, and play a crucial role in almost every event involving the Scourge from then on.
Rogue
Alliance
Edwin VanCleef
(
WoWWiki
)
VanCleef, despite his status of his low-level dungeon boss, was a significant Lore figure in the modern human history. He was the chief engineer and architect of Stormwind after the Second War. Stormwind, the way you see it today, would not have been possible without Edwin VanCleef.
It is only half surprising that Edwin abandoned all this and became leader of the Defias Brotherhood. After Stormwind's reconstruction was done, the House of Nobles refused to pay VanCleef and his workers for all the work they had done. Edwin stormed out, promising troubles for his former employers. And troubles he gave them - not long after his departure Edwin gathered workers, engineers, tinkers, architects, and other middle class men and women dissatisfied with the House of Nobles. They soon started attacking travelers and merchants on their way to and from Stormwind, creating an invisible siege around the city. Those men and women became the Defias Brotherhood some time later, and relocated themselves in Westfall, where they continued their sabotaging actions from.
Horde
Garona Halforcen
(
WoWWiki
)
Garona's character and history are some of the most complicated in the entire Lore of Warcraft. She was bred and raised by Gul'dan in a magical manner - Garona never really had a childhood, since the warlock's fel energies aged her prematurely. She was to be his spy, assassin, and agent on Azeroth - or wherever he needed her. In many ways Garona was Gul'dan's toy. And he held firm magical control over her and her actions.
One of the half-orc's last mission changed unexpectedly however. She was to be spying on Medivh while he was still alive, soon after the Dark Portal was opened. There Garona met Khadgar and both of them grew to trust the old Guardian more than anyone would have predicted. In fact, Garona went as far as to not report to Gul'dan, or send him false information regarding Medivh's plans, only so she can protect him. Latest sources seem to indicate that Garona's affection for Medivh went beyond simple strong friendship... and that the results of this affection is a young boy of incredible powers.
After assisting Khadgar in killing - or freeing - Medivh, Garona disappeared for some time. When she came back, she quickly became a trusted advisor of king Llane, and even acted as his secret spy when the orcs launched their attack on Stormwind. At the end Gul'dan's control over her forced her to kill her king - act she still regrets - and flee.
Garona's current whereabouts are explored in the World of Warcraft Comics, but I am not going to go into them here. It is sufficient to say that she leads an interesting life trying to break free from all the bonds in her life, while swinging back and forth between hope and despair.
Shaman
Alliance
Farseer Nobundo
(
WoWWiki
)
Farseer Nobundo is the first Draenei/Broken and consequently the first (documented) Alliance shaman character. Nobundo was once a draenei vindicator (a sort of paladin) on Draenor, before the First and Second War. Before the Orcs even left Draenor for Azeroth in fact. Unfortunately for him, in a battle against the orcs on Shattrath City, the orcs employed a strange red mist as a weapon against the draenei. This mist would knock a draenei unconscious, and then when they woke up, they were deformed and were no longer able to commune with the Light.
After the sacking of Shattrath City, all surviving draenei and broken went elsewhere. Unfortunately, due to the lack of the broken being able to commune with the Light like normal draenei, a schism developed between the two parties. And thus, while they lived together for a short time, the two "sub-races" gradually drifted farther and farther apart. Over time, it became apparent that most of the broken were losing the will to live, and were committing suicide. One day, while contemplating the act himself, Nobundo heard the wind speaking to him and saying,
"Everything that is . . . is alive."
As the wind spoke to him, and showed him the way of the Shaman, Nobundo found something that was worth living for. Something that might in fact help save his people from falling into further madness.
Unfortunately, when he tried to speak to the broken and the draenei, no one would pay any attention to him. The one exception to this was Velen the Prophet. Velen saw that the path of the shaman was one that would be worthwhile for all draenei to have the chance to learn, so he took Nobundo under his wing, including him in his inner circle and giving him a chance to teach all draenei who wanted to learn the path of the shaman.
Horde
Thrall
(
WoWWiki
)
Orphan, slave, gladiator, shaman, and a warchief - these are only a portion of the things the young orc is. Born in the foreign world of Azeroth soon after the war, Thrall was raised by the human Aedelas Blackmoord. Raised as a gladiator and slave. Thrall was well educated by his master, and subjects like strategy, tactics, warfare, and history were not unknown to him.
But the human oppression did not agree with Thrall. Abusive beatings and poor conditions forced Thrall to seek a way to escape Durnholde Keep. He succeeded with the aid of a human girl, Teretha Foxton, his only true friend. It was during his escape when Thrall found out the truth about the history of the Horde, Gul'dan, the demonic corruption, and the war. He was told about the magical lethargy all orcs felt, and that the only one not affected by it seemed to be Grom Hellscream, chieftain of the Warsong Clan. Invigorated, Thrall sought the man who would become his idol and friend in the future.
From here on Thrall's life began to change rapidly. Hellscream taught him the orcish language and traditions, and was also able to inform him that he belonged to the Frostwolf clan. Learning that remnants of the clan could be found in the Alterac Mountains, Thrall went off to find them - and met Drek'thar, a friend of his father, and a shaman from the time when the elements still heeded the orcish call.
To wrap up, Thrall allied his clan and himself with Hellscream's Warsong, and with Doomhammer - the old chieftain of the Horde, and Thrall's father's best friend - and succeeded where everyone else had failed. He united the scattered Horde, won the favor of the elements, restoring the shamanism among his people, and managed to restore much of the lost honor in the orcs - honor that had been replaced by savagery for years. Thrall is now a Warchief of the Horde - which includes other races as well - and tries to lead his subjects to a more civil future of agreement between old enemies, where the hatreds of the past are forgotten.
Warlock
Alliance
Kel'Thuzad
(
WoWWiki
)
A former Kirin Tor mage, Kel'Thuzad is now in eternal service of the Lich King as one of the most powerful necromancers and liches alive. His studies in necromantic magic date from even before he heard the Lich King's - Ner'zhul at that time - calling. As a mage in Dalaran, Kel'Thuzad experimented in secret with dead animals, trying to bring them back to life - studies strictly prohibited by the Kirin Tor. Just as he was beginning to reach some success, he was caught by his colleagues, and was exiled away from Dalaran. Holding grudges at the other mages - he was a member of the ruling council, the Six - Kel'Thuzad followed a call he had been hearing for a while, and sailed off to Northrend, where he made a pact with the Lich King. In exchange for loyalty and service, Kel'Thuzad would help the former warlock to develop and spread a necromantic plague.
Kel'Thuzad's success was remarkable - the speed and size of the epidemic were incredible, and he quickly found himself leader of the Cult of the Damned. When Lordaeron led an attack against his undead army, Kel'Thuzad was slain by prince Arthas, but was brought back to "life" after the paladin's campaign in Northrend. As a powerful lich, Kel'Thuzad served the death knight Arthas much better than the treacherous dreadlord, whose mission was to undermine the Lich King's influence. When Arthas and Ner'zhul merged into a single being, Kel'Thuzad was rewarded for his faithful service with the position of overseer of the dread citadel Naxxramas, one of the Lich King's most feared necropolises.
Horde
Gul'dan
(
WoWWiki
)
The warlock Gul'dan was the leader of the Inner Circle of the Shadow Council and the puppeteer of the Warchief Blackhand. He is also believed to be the most powerful mortal warlock ever to exist. Gul'dan was originally a member of the Shadowmoon clan and was at one time a shaman and apprentice to the shaman Ner'zhul, who was chieftain of the Shadowmoon clan and spiritual leader for the orcish people. When Kil'jaeden was scouting out Draenor, he approached Gul'dan and offered him the chance to learn the dark and sorcerous arts of the warlock if he would serve him faithfully. Gul'dan eagerly accepted and soon started to gather like-minded orcs to his cause, forming what would become known as the Shadow Council. He then started shaping the shattered shamanistic clans into an unstoppable bloodthirsty force that would become known as the Horde. One of the worst atrocities that Gul'dan committed to his people was when he sealed his bargain with Kil'jaeden by giving his people the Blood of Mannoroth. It was this foul concoction that essentially perpetrated the change in the orcish people from peaceful, shamanistic clans into the bloodthirsty, green, and raging monsters that sacked Azeroth during the First and Second wars.
To test out his new fighting force, Gul'dan commanded the orcs to hunt down and slaughter every draenei on Draenor that they could find. When Gul'dan saw how accomplished they were at this task, he knew that they were now ready to move on to a better target. Soon afterwords, Medivh (under Sargeras' control) contacted Gul'dan and offered to reveal to him the location of Sargeras' Tomb if Gul'dan moved against Azeroth. Gul'dan readily agreed and Medivh opened up the Dark Portal, allowing the Horde through to Azeroth where they would wreak havoc upon the world. And the rest is history...
Warrior
Alliance
Varian Wrynn
(
WoWWiki
)
Varian Wrynn is the current ruler of Stormwind and heir to King Llane Wrynn who was assassinated by Garona Halforcen. In his childhood, Garona Halforcen (a crossbreed of a Draenei and an Orc) had made friends with his father, Llane and quickly became a trusted adviser to him. Due to orders from the Shadow Council, a secret orc sect practicing demonism, Garona was forced to - despite all her heart's disregard - assassinate King Llane. Varian, shocked at the betrayal had to experience Stormwind being razed by the orcs in the First War and emigrate to Lordaeron where he met King Terenas and his son Arthas, whom he became a close friend with.
After the rebuilding of Stormwind he became crowned and as the king of Stormwind. However, due to
Dame Katrana Prestor
(
Onyxia
in disguise) meddling with political affairs, the Stonemasons were not properly reimbursed for their hard work. Having formed the Brotherhood of Thieves, known as Defias, they secretly abducted King Varian to a secret location. (This part of the tale can be followed in the quest line,
Un diplomate a disparu
.)
Varian was eventually able to flee from the Defias and Onyxia's minions but in the process, he lost his memory in an accident and was captured by orcish gladiators. During his trials he slowly regained his memory, aided by
Broll Mantelours
and
Valeera Sanguinar
, and became known as Lo'Gosh in his countless arena battles together with his friends. Eventually, Varian and Co. are able to flee and make their way back to Stormwind where is is reinstated as king.
Varian's stance on the Horde is heavily influenced by his experiences as a captive and gladiator slave. He is known for his hotheaded actions when dealing with the Horde, as can be seen in Northrend when the two factions meet at events such as the Wrath Gate and Ulduar.
Horde
Garrosh Hellscream
(
WoWWiki
)
Garrosh Hellscream, son of the famous Grommash (Grom) Hellscream who freed the orcs from their curse by slaying the Pit Lord Mannorath, is one of the rising stars of the New Horde. When the Dark Portal was first reopened, Garrosh was invited to join the Horde by Thrall himself. Garrosh soon proved his worth and became the personal advisor of the Warchief. Garrosh was also given the task to lead the Horde troops into Northrend.
Garrosh looks up to his father's memory and wishes to become a great warrior like him. Garrosh and Thrall frequently clash over ideals, with Garrosh believing that the New Horde is weak and should take over the lesser races of Azeroth. This goes so far as to Garrosh and Thrall even dueling; however, before their fight could be concluded it was interrupted by a massive Scourge assault against Orgrimmar (and Stormwind at the same time, but this is of no importance). Besides just clashing with Thrall, Garrosh and the human king, Varian Wrynn frequently argue as well. Garrosh views Varian as the embodiment of all that is human, and Varian feels that Garrosh is the embodiment of all that is orcish.
One thing to note is that with the recent cataclysmic events, Garrosh becomes the new warchief of the Horde. Two things that are known for facts are this: Orgrimmar is being remade to make it stronger and better protected from attacks, and all races except for orcs and tauren (as they were deemed "strong enough") will be removed from the inner area of Orgrimmar.
