Today, September 25, is the
10th anniversary
of
World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria
. Struggling between a content drought after the release of Dragon Soul, the final raid in
Cataclysm
, and the perceived cheesiness of an Asian themed continent populated with pandas, players weren't sure what to expect. Emperor Shaohao, Chen Stormstout, Taran Zhu, and the Pandaran turned out to be a race with character and depth, and the story of Pandaria was engaging, poignant, impactful, and fun. Most players were pleasantly surprised and Mists of Pandaria remains one of the most popular World of Warcraft expansions to date. Now, a full decade later, and available for leveling through Chromie Time, Mists really stands the test of time and holds its place proudly in the history of World of Warcraft.
Pre-expansion Patch
The pre-expansion patch was released on August 28, 2012. Systems changes including updated class mechanics, the Talent System revamp from a points based paradigm to the tiered system that we still have today, and Area of Effect looting were introduced in the run-up to Mists. Players could practice their updated classes at level 85 in the very first scenario,
Theramore's Fall
. Battle Tag support was also introduced at this time, along with account-wide Achievements, pets, and mounts, and cross-realm zones.
Mists of Pandaria
On September 15, 2012
World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria
launched, raised the character level cap to 90, and introduced a wealth of new content including:
New continent: Pandaria
Initial leveling and questing
zones
included
La forêt de Jade
,
Vallée des Quatre vents
,
Étendues sauvages de Krasarang
,
L’escalier Dérobé
,
Sommet de Kun-Lai
,
Steppes de Tanglong
,
Terres de l’Angoisse
,
Val de l’Éternel printemps
, and the Pandaran race introductory zone,
L’île Vagabonde
. Players could travel to Pandaria, level to 90, and begin the Legendary Questline that would culminate in the Legendary Cloak. Players could acquire their own farm, Sunsong Ranch, and battle World Bosses
Sha de la colère
and
Galion
.
New class:
Moine
Monks are a leather-wearing, dual resource, predominantly close quarters class with three specializations:
Brewmaster
(tank): A sturdy brawler who uses liquid fortification and unpredictable movement to avoid damage and protect allies.
Mistweaver
(healer): A healer who masters the mysterious art of manipulating life energies, aided by the wisdom of the Jade Serpent and Pandaren medicinal techniques.
Windwalker
(melee dps): A martial artist without peer who pummels foes with hands and fists.
New race:
Pandaren
Pandarans can be
Chasseur
,
Mage
,
Moine
,
Prêtre
,
Voleur
,
Chaman
, and
Guerrier
. With the introduction of
Shadowlands
, Pandaran can also be
Chevalier de la mort
.
Much like the Goblins' starting area, the Pandaran starting zone,
L’île Vagabonde
, was inaccessible once completed. The Wandering Isle is a rich zone with a story that culminates in Pandaran characters choosing between joining the Alliance or the Horde, resulting in the Pandarans being the first and, currently only, race which can choose whether to ally with the Alliance or the Horde
New Systems including: Player Farms, Scenarios, Pet Battles, the Black Market Auction House
The
Player Farm
, Sunsong Ranch, was the first time WoW implemented single player customizable content. This raised hope for eventual player housing but, although the concept was expanded in
Warlords of Draenor
with Garrisons, that has never come to pass.
Scenarios
were the introduction of 3 person instanced content. Intended to be smaller and quicker than Dungeons, scenarios did not require specific roles and were intended to be able to be completed with any class/spec combination "on your lunch break." This turned out to be well intentioned, but trying to complete a scenario with, for example, 3 healers, proved to be a challenge for many.
Pet Battles
introduced the minigame-within-the-game, and turned vanity pets into the Pokeman-style units we have today.
The
BMAH
introduced a method of funneling older collectable items to those who had the gold, and apart from added locations, is largely unchanged 9 years later.
Dungeons
Mists included 6 new dungeons,
Temple du Serpent de jade
,
Brasserie Brune d’Orage
,
Monastère des Pandashan
,
Palais Mogu’shan
,
Porte du Soleil couchant
, and
Siège du temple de Niuzao
, and 4 remastered dungeons,
Scholomance
,
Salles Écarlates
,
Monastère Écarlate
, and
Gouffre de Ragefeu
, for a total of 10 new 5 player instances.
Mists also saw the introduction of
Dungeon Challenge Modes
. A precursor to the current
Mythic+
system, Challenge modes pitted players against a timer to win class transmog sets and mage-style teleports to the dungeon entrances.
Raids
Mists of Pandaria had 5 total raids, the first 3 of which opened on a staggered schedule after the initial launch. First was
Caveaux Mogu’shan
, then
Cœur de la peur
, and finally
Terrasse Printanière
.
PvP
New PvP content included 2 new battlegrounds,
Mines d’Éclargent
and
Temple de Kotmogu
, and a new arena,
Arène Tol’viron
.
Patch 5.1: Landfall
November 27, 2012
The storyline continued with the
Pandaren Campaign
, faction specific events in the Krasarang Wilds.
Operation: Shieldwall
for the Alliance and
Dominance Offensive
for the Horde added new reputations. A few new scenarios opened. The
Brawler's Guild
was introduced as a fight club where players could battle unique enemies one-on-one. Brawler's Guild has existed in a similar form through
Battle for Azeroth
.
Patch 5.2: Rise of The Thunder King
March 5, 2013
The
Île du Tonnerre
was added, along with the raid,
Trône du tonnerre
, and World boss
Nalak
.
Île des Géants
was added with World Boss
Oondasta
and the discoverable ability for Hunters to tame dinosaurs.
Patch 5.3: Escalation
May 21, 2013
Taking the battle back to Kalimdor, Escalation introduced the
Battlefield: Barrens
world event as the Darkspear Trolls, led by Vol'jin, rebelled against Garrosh Hellscream, fracturing the Horde. New Scenarios and Heroic Scenarios were added. For PvP, there was a new battleground,
Gorge de Vent-Caverneux
and new arena,
Le croc du Tigre
.
Patch 5.4: Siege of Orgrimmar
September 10, 2013
The final patch,
Siege of Orgrimmar
, introduced the eponymous 5th and final raid with Garrosh Hellscream as the final boss, as well as the
Timeless Isle
, a new single person scenario,
Proving Grounds
, and a new system,
Flexible Raid
difficulty.
For more details on this patch, check out our reminiscence, from last year.
Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.4: Siege of Orgrimmar
Initially an extremely well received final patch, Siege of Orgrimmar lost a little of its shine as the months dragged on; Warlords of Dranor, the next expansion, was not released until over a year later. The content drought was an unfortunate end to a magnificent expansion, although in retrospect, even that could not destroy the brilliance of Mists of Pandaria.
Lore
Mists of Pandaria is also notable for a renewed interest in lore and storytelling. In addition to the complex and intriguing main and zone storylines, along with the introduction of lore points of interest that could be discovered for achievements, Mists introduced the first lore cinematic miniseries, the
Burdens of Shaohao
. This method of imparting background story for an expansion survives to this day, the latest being the
Shadowlands: Afterlives
series.
The advent of Chromie Time allows new characters to level through the Mists of Pandaria expansion and experience it similarly to the way it was intended. If you missed this great expansion, or if you'd like to re-experience it, create a new character, and talk to Chromie about Pandaria!
