Today we present an interview with Sebens, a 12/12 Mythic tank who plays Warcraft without hands. He wanted to share his story and gaming setup with us to show that there are plenty of ways to achieve playing video games (or anything) with a disability.
You can catch Sebens streaming at
Twitch.tv/Amputrex
, usually during the morning at 8am CST for dailies/emissaries, or M+/Raids in the evenings around 5pm CST.
Tell us a bit about yourself. What drew you to play Warcraft in the first place?
When I was only 3 years old, I was in a farm accident that ended up amputating both of my arms from above the elbow. I realized pretty quickly growing up that I would have a lot of issues doing things that a lot of my friends would be doing (sports and similar things). One thing that I figured out pretty early on though was maneuvering a mouse. A lot of my memories of when I was younger involved games such as
Age of Empires
and
Warcraft 3
. I also loved playing games on my playstation
My favorite games of all time will always be the
Metal Gear
series. As time went on my brother and I finally got
World of Warcraft
in the later half of vanilla. I've been playing it ever since.
You're in as 12/12 Mythic guild as a main tank. What drew you to playing a tank and what are the biggest challenges of playing one?
To be honest the only reason I'm currently tanking is because my guild, <Cry Moar>, had a rough time recruiting a 2nd tank so I just said I would do it. We had 3 or 4 DPS players tank different fights in Uldir because we couldn't find a tank.
I think the biggest challenge of playing a tank is trying to push out as much damage as you can while also not getting punished for it in raid environments. For M+, in my opinion, it is about using the utility that you have (CC, interrupting, etc) while maintaining good positioning, a healthy speed for your party, keeping tabs on the DPS CDs, and giving your healer a chance to quickly drink when they need to. I definitely think tanking high keys is a lot more challenging than tanking a Mythic raid.
Tell us a bit about your current setup to play WoW.
The set up I have is pretty basic when it comes down to it. I have a Razer keyboard, a pretty basic Logitech mouse, and 2 Stinkyboard foot pedals.
Each foot pedal has 4 binds on it. For me, one pedal is bound to 1-4 and the other is bound to 5-8. I try to bind abilities that are the core abilities to the class I play. Other than my foot pedals, I really only use my keyboard arrow keys to move and my mouse to click abilities such as long cooldowns or potions (I'm sorry to everyone who hates clickers) and to move occasionally.
Mandl from the Acherus discord made me an overlay for my stream that has every button that I use which helps people put my setup into perspective.

Kb+M haven't been able to really get a new Kb+m or mousepad in a long time so everything's pretty weathered

How did you research and create your gaming setup?
Doing research and finding peripherals to try and perfect my setup was a terrible experience. I had no idea where to look or what to even look for. I was probably around 13 or 14 and my dad was nice enough to let me purchase foot pedals to assist me with using my PC. I think I tried out about a dozen different foot pedals, and most of them were horrible. I tried drum pedals, flight sim pedals, and many other types but sadly none of them had more than 1 or 2 bindings or were just poorly designed for what I wanted to use them for.
I finally realized that no one had made peripherals for someone with no hands to use on a PC. When I was around 17 years old I had found stinkyboard.com that made durable, high quality, and customizable foot pedals. They are some of the finest hardware I've used. Sadly, it seems like they are no longer being produced so it's a scary thought that one day I'll have to find a new foot pedal all over again.
What is your proudest memory/achievement in WoW?
Some of my favorite memories in WoW are typical things like slaying the Lich King, defeating Argus, and other big final bosses, but this current tier of Ny'alotha has had a lot of good memories. My guild performed the best we have ever done (US 62, World 216) on a strict 9 hour/week schedule (no raiding extra hours, no "optional heroic run" on a non raid day) we raided only 9 hours every week and everyone did awesome!
I also like doing a lot of damage so every time I got a good parse is pretty great too.
DK is named Handydandy
My druid (Iwearcrocs) was 9th on Allstars for mythic EP
Do you enjoy playing any other video games, or have any other hobbies you are proud of?
I enjoy playing a ton of other games (PC, PS4, XBOX, and Switch). If you are curious on how I'm able to play console games, it took many years of using my feet to manipulate the controllers. I don't use any tools or extra peripherals for them. (Sony by far has the best accessibility options.) Some recent games I really enjoyed were
God of War
,
Breath of the Wild
, and the whole
Dark Souls
series (
Sekiro
and
Bloodbourne
also). I'm looking forward to
Cyberpunk 2077
,
The Last of Us 2
, and
Ghosts of Tsushima
this year! I really enjoy games with good writing so I'm always looking forward to seeing what games companies like CD Project Red or Naughty Dog are making.
Outside of gaming I really enjoy fishing and traveling. (One of my favorite trips was going to Blizzcon). I also love spending time with my wife and daughter!
Any advice for players that have disabilities who are interested in playing video games, but think they can only participate vicariously?
The best advice I can give is something I never did. Ask for help. Ask on reddit, the Blizzard forums, etc. I tried to do everything myself and I regret it. I also recommend looking at products that aren't necessarily made for gaming. Drum pedals and Flight Sim pedals are two things I can think of that work in a pinch.
