Gearing Up in Dragonflight and Improving Your Item Level - Dratnos and Tettles Discuss

This week's GG WoW video goes over early gearing options in Dragonflight and recommends an order to do these activities based off of whether or not they scale off of your character's item level. Several systems do scale off this, which means that their rewards increase as your character's item level increases, and crucially it currently seems that many characters item level (as shown when mousing over it in the character pane, which is what these sources look at) is inflated, perhaps by PvP gear or profession equipment.
NOTE: Gearing up your character this way can feel important and instill intense negative emotions like the fear of missing out. Though super min-maxing players will indeed want to scour all sources of upgrades early, it's important to note that whether you come out of the first two weeks at 360 or 380 item level is going to be very unimportant in the grand scheme of things, unless you're Racing for World First, as the gear will very quickly be obsolete by gear from +10 dungeons or Normal raid. You should not be afraid to do only some or even none of these things!
Dratnos and Tettles therefore recommend beginning with the
Cobalt Assembly ring farm
(note that you should upgrade your Assembly early to get extra rep!). This generates a guaranteed ilvl 389 ring which is a nice bump to your item level.
There are also great 366 pieces available with
Jetons sanglants
, a War Mode currency that you can get large numbers of from the first
War Supply Crate you loot each day
, plus some World Quests that are only visible with War Mode on. These 366s come with a nice set bonus as well, with the 2-set granting 105 extra Versatility.
Mythic Dungeons drop 372 gear which does not scale with your item level, so doing them as early as possible in theory is optimal, as it bumps up your item level for the sources that DO scale off that, but in practice you will find the dungeons easier and you'll find getting into groups much easier if you pick up some of the low hanging upgrades from sources like World Quests before doing this.
Once you have an item level you're happy with, it's time to take out the big weekly rewards that scale with that, which you can learn about in
this article
and kill
Super Rares
.
Finally, once all of that is done, you can continue acquiring high item level gear by killing rares, ideally in a party or raid. Simply fly around dragonflight, kill rares, and they will drop gear as high as item level 378, though notably this gear is from a global loot table and is not tradeable, so your bags will fill up with a bunch of armor and weapons that you can't use.
