I found this today while questing in Greenstone Quarry (entrance at 46.1, 29.1) in La forêt de Jade. I ran around a corner and saw it lying on some rocks. I don't remember the exact spot, but it's a small cave. It was sparkling like an un-looted mob, but it wasn't a drop. I was also awarded the Objets trouvés achievement.

Just to confirm, you can use this to replace your regular mining pick.

Also, although the caption reads "Allows you to find gems while mining in Pandaria," I have yet to find any gems from mining Minerai d'ectofer.

This is located on the bottom floor of the Greenstone Quarry. If you open up your map, it is the little square room to the bottom left. It spawns on the rocks along side the cart with green gems in it. There is also a ghost ore spawn right along side it. Use the screenshot, very easy to find the right spot.

It looks like this item spawns in multiple points in this mine. I found mine after a server restart at 40.1/41.9 sticking out of a rock.

Obtained this item on live today. I can confirm the facts as stated by benergy in their comment.

It does indeed allow a drop chance on gems, and though I only have a sample size to report of about 4-5 nodes after finding this pick, I had received 1 uncommon quality gem. I will update this post to clarify the quality of gems from higher mining nodes if Wowhead does not track them first.

The Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne is considered a new type of rare spawn introduced with Mists of Pandaria Lost and Found loot system.

The system consists of rare items, like this one, scattered all over Pandaria but with specific spawn locations. They can be found in chests or just laying on the ground sparkling. There is no killing involved.

I am in my third day of camping the spot in the screenshots (on top of rocks in SW square room, 43.9 30.8) and have not seen it spawn once. I'm doing this while I work so have spent about 8 hours the previous two days and 4 hours so far today keeping an eye on the spot with occasional jaunts through the rest of the lower floor since it isn't very busy during the work day. I realize there are reports that it spawns in other locations, but it appears that the respawn rate is very slow.

Also, in regards to the coordinate discrepancies, I've noticed a few places on the bottom floor where the coordinates jump. For instance, I'm at 44.1 28.8, move north 4 steps and am at 39.1 44.1.

Edit: On the fourth day, I got the pick, so about 25 hours of camping. After doing lots of mining, I will say that it was not worth it! I did lots of mining over the weekend and got 2 gems (but I didn't count how much mining I did.) This morning, 10/1/2012, I have mined 605 ore and received one gem. I will update as I get more numbers.

Its spawn is random in the Mine. it can spawn sticking out of any of the rocks that look like the ones in the screenshots. I got mine after a server restart in the NW part of the mine.

Information that may help.

After countless hours, I managed to find the pick in a different location to the one previously pictured here. I've submitted a screenshot, although unsure if it will be posted. Co-ordinates of the item was 45.6, 29.4. It's basically on the set of rocks in front of you as soon as you come down the stairs into the quarry.

Unsure about the spawn rate, although it seems very low, I was wandering around the quarry for many hours at a time, over the period of a couple of days - I'd suspect about 10-15 hours in total if I had to estimate. I didn't see anyone else pickup the item or receive the achievement in that time. I would speculate it can spawn on any of the rock formations in the quarry.

When you loot the item there is channeled progress bar, it's only about 1-2 seconds although you may need to keep this in mind if there are others trying to loot it and there are monsters about. You also get a popup letting you know it will bind to your account, so get ready to click the confirmation if there's mobs about.

That's the good news! The bad news is..

That after mining 9 stack of Ghost Iron Ore from both normal and "rich" nodes, I still haven't managed to find a gem. I've tried re-logging, leaving Pandaria and coming back, removing my existing mining equipment. Not a single stinking gem. So not sure what the go is, I'm only mining in Jade Forest due to my level, but I thought I'd at least snag a couple.

Update: After doing a fair whack of mining with the pick in my bag, it must be said that the drop rate of gems from mining nodes isn't very encouraging. You do get gems from all mining nodes in Pandaria, even Ghost Iron Ore, although you can go 10 stacks of ore before you get a drop. The pick is great to have, although it's not really a money spinner that I suspect most people thought it may have been initially.

Ok. I just found this on Killrog at 12:38 server time 28 sep.

Pressing M, it is definately in the southern section of the map in the left most alcove.

It Is NOT an existing pick icon. It spawns as a large looking mining pick laying horizontally inbetween the Panda and the Jade filled Cart, on a cluster of rocks.

I cant recall if it glows, as i panicked and grabbed it, hence no screen shot.

Me and 2 others of my guild were in and out all day in the quarry.

Im Huddy on Killrog if u have any questions.

Good luck. Once the rarity of this catches on and people hit 90 it will be heavily camped I would say.

This might not be important to most, but if you have friends with you and want to get the Lost and Found achievement, you could let him click on the pickaxe and not loot the item.

As long as the pickaxe isn't looted, it will allow the next person to get the achievement.

I am thus far finding this to be the hardest of the world-spawn rare artifacts to obtain. This is likely because many of them are hidden away in a spot that is not frequently visited; whereas this mine is constantly crawling with players, either questing or reaping the very frequently spawning and plentiful ore. Your best bet if you MUST have this item is to camp a secondary character there and log in every hour on the hour to do a lap and hope for the best!

As other have said, it spawns in a variety of places in the quarry, but always resting on/jutting out of rock. Good luck!

I found this in the NW room so there must be multiple spawn points or at least 2. I had been checking the spot mentioned here every few hours but it was always full of questers so i went around 3 am server time and i was only one there so i checked SW room and nothing so I decided to mine for about 15 minutes and i saw the sparkly in NW room and grabbed it. I went 2 days with no gems and I was hardcore mining roughly 20 stacks of ore then late the second day i got an uncommon from a rich kyparite vein. Yesterday I received 2 gems twice, one of which was rare, from a rich ghost iron and then a ghost iron and was mostly questing with a little mining.

I camped the Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne for over 8 hours on opening day and never saw it the mine. I checked all possible spawn locations listed here and elsewhere.

I finally had an opportunity to get acquainted with this mining pick since there was emergency server maintenance which required all servers to be reset and brought back online immediately. I got booted off the server. I then waited patiently to log back in ASAP to see if I could loot it. Lo and behold, when the server let me online a few minutes later, I was the only one in the mine. Also, I was the only one in the mine next to a bunch of angry spiders but also next to a sparkly Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne. I dps'd my little rogue's heart out (or, rather, I carved the enemy hearts' out) and claimed the mining pick. Sucess.

However, the bad news to report is that after mining exactly 44 Rich Minerai d'ectofer deposits and 121 Minerai d'ectofer regular deposits, and have unearthed exactly zero gems. 0. Zero gems at. I'd say that's a large sample size to say something is wrong.

I can add to the short list of people finding this right after a server restart. I made sure to logout in the cave before Tuesday maintenance, and kept an eye on the realm status. As soon as the server came back up, I logged in. There were two of us in there (opposite factions on a pvp server, so there was the potential for ugly stuff to happen.) he chose to stay in one spot, I ran from one known spot to the next looking (stealthed on my rogue, so he didn't know he had company). The pick was not up initially, but popped up after about 3 minutes in the back spawning point (by the big rock spider next to the little tunnel to nowhere).

I have been running around with it for a little while, and thus far it is not particularly spectacular. So far I have mined 100 nodes and gotten 1 blue quality gem and 2 greens. Nothing to write home about... But hey, free gems are free!

I got this last night upon server restart - logged in next to the cart holding the green rocks in the little room, and the pick was there, as per the screen shot posted by Lore.

When I clicked on the item I got the achievement, but did not get a loot window. I then proceeded to panic and quickly re-clicked on it 5 or 6 times - one of these frantic clicks scored me a loot window.

Immediately went to mine and got one green gem drop off a rich ghost iron node - that's it so far, after about 30 nodes mined.

But I'm just happy I found it :D

After my 7th day of camping the Quarry I have finally found this pick axe, along with the other 2 rares that spawn in Jade Forest! One right after another. I have found the pick in the same location as the screenshot shows it in the South West spot in the square room sticking out of the rock. This information may be useful for people searching for this as well. What I did was I went to Owen's Wishing Well northwest of the Terrace of Ten Thunders and found Perforeuse mantide de Wodin and got the achievement Objets trouvés. When I stepped out of the Wishing well I noticed that a Coin was appeared there. I flipped the coin and received a buff called A fait un vœu. After that I went to where Marteau des Cent tonnerres spawns and found that. After that I went to the Quarry to find Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne sticking out of the rock. Also, on the page for Perforeuse mantide de Wodin there is a useful post suggesting that you need this buff in order to find the dagger. So perhaps you need this buff to find all three items.

I found this today after a few days of checking sporadically and after rolling restarts. It was not there after today's rolling restart; I found it about 8.5 hours after servers were back up. It was along the left side of the Quarry before the dead end on the upper left (39.67, 40.60) and not across the stairs or in the southwest room. Unfortunately I panicked when I saw it and clicked it right away without taking a screenshot with it on the wall. D:

The character I found it with is NOT a miner. (Easier spotting it with a non-miner imo since it should be the only shiny thing down there.) I actually passed it then doubled back since I thought I saw something sparkle.

Also, you do not need to be on the quests to get it. My rogue only did up to accepting the quests after jumping from the parachute.

I have now been mining with this for a couple days now, as i do nothing but mine while at school. i have acquired a large amount of ore, all together i have gotten 3 rare gems and 5 uncommon. out of what has to be close to 1500 ore. anybody who is camping this pick might as well not bother, or get it and hope that blizz does something to make it worth it. as it stands now you might as well spend the time looking for this gathering some extra ore and have a JC just prospect it for you.

Been poking my head in the mine from time to time since MoP launch and found the pick today, late at night when the server was pretty dead. I found it next to the red and white basket directly across from the bottom of the stairs at the entrance to the lower level of the mine (screenshot submitted).

Picked this up today. Farmed up about 100 Ghost Iron Ore so far and got 1 gem. So the gem drop rate is still pretty low. Keep in mind thats 100 ore, not 100 spawns that i tapped. Maybe 15-20 spawns and 1 gem.

Found this immediately after maintenance today. It was sticking out of a large piece of jade at the Northwest corner of the lower floor of the mine. Exact coordinates are 37,13. I will be submitting a screenshot. It did indeed award me with Lost and Found.

I just grabbed this, I cruised through the mine about once time each day for about 3 days, so didnt put a lot of effort ito getting this. Once grabbed, I mined the first node and bam, and extra gem, I was excited, I thought - nice proc rate, I continued mining for the next 45 minutes all over pandaria, and didnt receive any more gems...

So I went into the cave looking for this item and, as an engineer, used my nitro boosts. They malfunctioned and sent me THROUGH THE ROOF OF THE CAVE! I flew so high that I eventually ended up outside on top of the cave! That really creeped me up :D EDIT: Why downrate a funny story?

Edit 2012.12.24: The bug has been fixed. Looting an Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne now properly completes FLAG - Ancient Pandaren Mining Pick and thus grants achievement credit.

Has anyone looted an Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne and had the completion counter for the relic achievements increase?

I just found it as my 20th relic, it didn't give credit for me and several others have said that they didn't receive credit either, so i am suspecting that it counts for Objets trouvés only, and not the subsequent tiers of the achievement.

Also, if anyone who has also found the Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne would be willing to do so, please check and see if FLAG - Ancient Pandaren Mining Pick (that is, quest 31399) is completed on the character you found it on using a quest tracking addon. It appears that the relic FLAG quests are what the achievement uses to determine if you receive credit as well as what the server uses to determine if you can see that relic, and that quest did not query as complete for me unlike every other relic i have found and checked.

If no one is receiving completion credit for that quest, i think we can safely assume that is the source of both the achievement bug and the bug that allows you to loot multiple Pioche de mineur pandaren anciennes on a single character.

I got mine today and since have mined about 420 ore... 20 of that is Trillium; 9 black and 11 white. I was mining in Townlong and Kun Lai. Out of all of that ore, I mined ONE green gem and that was from a Rich Trillium Vein! Guess the proc rate is really really low... Perhaps to the point of not even worth the effort it took for me to get it.

The gem proc rate on the pick seems to be very low -- my guess is ~1%. After mining approximately 100 Ghost Iron nodes in the Valley of the Four Winds, I had 423 Minerai d'ectofer, and one single Cœur du fleuve. The gem came from a non-rich node, so apparently node type isn't a requirement for the proc.

Has anyone enchanted this and been able to mail it between characters like a "standard" heirloom? I'm a little leery about trying and having it become soulbound, because these new Pandaria rare world items function a bit differently than regular heirlooms since they don't scale by level and don't have the rarity/item type of regular 'looms. Given the multitude of comments about the horrible drop rate of gems with this mining pick, I'd rather have my (non-mining) warrior use it as a DPS increase.

Edit: After looting my second Pick (on a different toon than the first), I tried enchanting one and was able to mail it between characters successfully.

I saw it up and before my friend could get it, someone else looted it. So I decided to wait for it to respawn, thinking it would be like a normal rare spawn (24 hours or so) but it was much longer.

After 4 to 5 days it finally re spawned and my friend was able to get it.

I am 99% sure I did not miss a spawning. I will admit to being offline for a few hours (no more than 3-4 during the 4 to 5 days of camping) and I was killed by the opposite faction a few times.

If you looted this item and did not receive credit, do open a ticket with GM.

I was at 18/20 when I looted the mining pick, and it did not credit me towards the achievement. The GM was able to manually flag the quest as completed, and as soon as I logged on the character who had looted it, the achievement correctly displayed 19/20 for all my characters.

I am on the Velen server and have been serching for 2 weeks, hours at a time for these weapons to spawn. Someone please tell me anything useful such as time you found it what your rep was in that zone what level you are quest you where on. Think searching 2 weeks from 7 am until 8 - 9 pm and coming up with nothing. I want the pick and I want the Blade of the Prime.

For whatever reason I have found this to be the hardest of the "Lost and Found" artifacts to obtain. I check numerous times daily and have done since the day of the launch of Mists. I would imagine this is because the area is extremely frequently visited due to a quest chain that takes you through (as opposed to other artifacts that are hidden away in rarely visited spots,) and also because people are farming it fort he desirable proc that, as many have attested, barely does anything at all.

The Ancient Pandaren Mining Pick is in multiple locations. Each location is identified by shovels, picks and tools on the ground. If you roam around to all the coordinates listed, you will see tools in the area. Look for the tools, and you will find all the spawn points

Found mine at (39.9, 41.3) in the lower (main) section of the cave system. There is a set of rails that is covered by dirt right underneath a support archway. I found the pick in a set of rocks right next to this archway, on the inner wall, with my character facing southeast. I've submitted a screenshot which is pending approval.

I just found a Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne on the 5.1 PTR using a copy of my character who has FLAG credit for all of the other relics and FLAG - Ancient Pandaren Mining Pick remains incomplete.

I guess we will have to hope the bug is fixed by the time 5.1 makes it to live.

Just found this about 30 minutes ago, after a LOT of looking (every day the first couple of weeks after MoP hit, then about 2-3 times per week after that... probably about 8-10 hours total time searching). Found it in the small "nook" in the SW corner of the quarry map - which does seem to be the most frequent spot to find it. Just spoke with a GM, and the Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne DOES NOT count towards the Relic Hunter title. This seems to be a known bug they hope to fix in a future patch, although the GM did not indicate when it would be fixed, and was not optimistic that the fix would be retroactive.

The Pick is a neat item on its own, but if you're just after the Relic Hunter title, at least for now, it may not be worth your time to duck into that mine.

To those complaining about a low process rate, I would say don't carry the item with you and you wont have to worry. Mind you, you wont get ANY FREE gems.. but at least you wont have to deal with the "low process rate".

Guys, really! These are FREE GEMS! If you want a lot of gems, roll a jewel crafter and prospect the ore! Don't look a gift horse in the mouth! If you were walking down the street and found $20 on the sidewalk, would you be posting in forums complaining that you didn't find $40? Actually, from what I've been reading... some probably would.

I just found this roughly 3 mins before the server shutdown... I was going to the Greenstone Quarry to get into position to start searching when the servers came back up... Walked down the stairs, and BOOM, there it was, across the way from the bottom of the stairs... Haven't had a chance to mine with it yet.

I finally got this after weeks of trying to get it, tried camping it several times and gave up, switched to simply checking to see if it was there after my failed camping attempts. I found it in the spot where most people seem to have, take a left off the stairs going down and run until the cave turns to the right, and the alcove on the left was where it was at. One thing I do hate about that particular spawn point (as a miner) is that a lot of the time there is a ghost iron node there, and the sparkles from it always made my heart jump into my throat with excitement until I realized it wasn't the pick. Now that I've got it, however, I have yet to get a single gem from mining, and unfortunately it's not that great for leveling alts either if you happen to have some of the other BoA's such as the Yaungol Fire Carrier or Blade of the Prime, both of which are ilvl 450 and consequently do much higher damage. That being said, it's cool for transmog and it does boost your mining skill, and there is at least a chance at getting gems.

It seems like droprate was increased either in 5.1 or in later hotfix. While mining today for transmuting to daily steel, I've got 4 gems along with 100 ore in 15 minutes.

I can absolutely confirm the Ancient Pandaren Mining Pick does not need to be equipped to have a chance to find gems. This has been confirmed today 22/12/2012

After finding the pick earlier today I decided to see what the find rate on gems was like.

I mined 556 Ghost Iron Ore from both normal and rich veins and also looted the following in the order listed below whilst mining;

1 x Roguestone
1 x Imperial Amethyst
1 x Alexandrite
1 x Sun's Radiance

The first two gems were looted with the pick equipped, the second two gems were looted with the pick in my bags.

The drop rate for that particular farming session was 1 gem for around 139 ore.

Having this in your inventory when harvesting Graine de serpencines will cause you to get gems at the same rate as if you were mining a node in Pandaria.

This item will have the normal "sparkle" and is lootable even if you are already carrying one in your bags or have one equipped, as long as that character hasn't looted it before. My death knight already had one pick in his bags (which had been looted by my hunter) and was able to grab another one.

I found the Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne today at 40.4, 41.8 inside the Greenstone Quarry. I immediately started farming ore and was definitely disappointed.

Looted this at around 11:30PM server time, Ravencrest-US. It was sticking partially in a rock in the part of the mine that has a lot of green webbing. If you look at the map of the mine, it has green coloration in that spot. You come down the stairs, go left and then left again and you'll be looking right at all the green webbing. Am submitting a screenshot to show where it was before I looted it.

Some have stated that this is well worth the experience and the loot. Some such people even stated that it "replaces" the mining pick you already have in your bag. I will have to say that this pick takes up 1 more bag space than I had before because I learned that you do not need to have a mining pick in your bag to mine. News for some I am sure. This is also true for fishing without having a pole equipped though the fish chances are crap. Anyway, after realizing that I had already picked this puppy up I sent it to my miner and started looking for some ore since my miner is also a jewelcrafter and figured I wouldn't have to prospect as much. This is not the case, as many have pointed out. The rate at which you get gems is low. Furthermore, the gems that are being proc'd are basic Pandaria green gems, not the blues you need to craft with. That sucks, but it is not the end of the world. This can still be good for people leveling mining since it does give the +10 to mining which can help get some of those higher end ores out of the way faster. Its a nifty toy, but not worth farming unless you need it for the achievement.

Found one today directly across from the bottom of the stairs, sticking out of a flat rock just to the left of a basket with 4 red stripes on it. I have never heard of this location before, but it could be one of the locations given previously using map coordinates only. From what I've read while researching this treasure, there are a few different spawn locations inside the Quarry. Look everywhere: In rooms, behind rocks etc.
I found mine deep within Green Stone Quarry, in the green rock area. (My apologies, I can not provide coordinates.) Make sure to take a good look before leaving, my graphics are turned way up and I couldn't see the glittering from far away very well. The pick is very thin, too. Easy to miss.
Don't zoom your camera out too far, either.

Do not move when you are in the middle of looting. It can de-spawn if you're loot window closes without looting the pick.

This is a great item, in my opinion.
Sure, the drop rate on gems are quite low.. But a free gem is always nice to come by.

Some answers to questions I've been asked about this item:
You do not need to have Jewel Crafting to use this item.
You do not need to have this item equipped to find gems.
You do not have to have mining in order to loot the pick.
It's BOA also, you can mail it to your miner.
Like other treasures found in Pandaria, you get a ton of XP for looting this item if you are under level 90.
This item, if you plan on equipping it, can be transmogrified.
You can also trangmog other weapons to look like this one.
It is possible to enchant the pick, and mail it to other toons.
Like other mining picks, this one can be placed in your mining bag.

I got this pick last night. I had been looking earlier in the day with no luck, but at around 3am server when a guildie and I were flying around zones killing rares, we passed this cave. Decided to make a quick pit stop and ran through the cave, and there it was.

It was directly across from the little cove with all of the jade where the cart tracks turn.

I would recommend going late at night like I did when everyone isn't looking for it.

That being said, after mining a lot today (~400 ghost iron and ~50 trillium), I still haven't gotten any gems.

i suspect this item is affected by phasing. i perched for hours on end many times as well as made visits day in and day out, never finding the pick. today i decided to wrap up the story lines in jade forest that i needed to finish. greenstone quarry was the first place on my list to finish. on my way to accept the quests which would begin the greenstone quarry line, i stopped into the quarry and made a couple rounds searching for the pick. no luck. then i went and picked up the first quests, "calamity jade" and "trapped". i went about my business and thought nothing of the pick, as i had just been in the quarry 5 minutes prior and saw no sign. went down the first set of stairs and boom, there is the pick sticking out of a rock right in front of the stairs. tl:dr - suspect phasing is an issue. start greenstone quarry quest line before looking for the pick.

I just got boned and lost my pick. I found one this morning a few hours after restart, killed the annoying 47K hp shale spiders around it, started to loot it, up popped the "this item will become bound if you loot it" dialog and before I can click "yes" another of the stupid little bugs came from inside a boulder it was wrongly allowed to clip inside so it could not be seen, attacks me, the loot window closes, the pick despawns!

So be very careful that there's no stupid bug hiding inside one of the boulders before you start to loot, I'd recommend sweeping the area with AOE to be sure. I've opened a ticket, but I know that response will essentially be "sucks to be you," which is what I've come to expect as the answer to just about every ticket from the GM team.

Even though the drop chance isnt great for gems i still wanted it and its more of a chance of getting a gem than i had before. i also got the Lost and Found achievement as it was my first hidden treasure found.

You can actually get gems from the snakeroot plants that you grow on your Tiller's farm if you have the Pandaren mining pick in your bag (the plants that give you ores). I Just got a Lapis Lazuli while looting my snakeroot nodes.

I've added a couple comments here, about the gem drop rate and "farming" this item. So another won't hurt. LOL.
Seriously, this is not all that hard to get. Don't sit in the mine for hours, of course, but do make the mine a mining location when you are in the area. I got my 2nd Pandaren Mining Pick last night. I was flying over greenstone quarry, and popped in to mine the ore and check for the pick. Just ran around (as a tank) pulling everything behind me, all along the walls, came across the pick, killed all the mobs following me, and looted my 2nd pick.

It should be noted, just in case anyone else was curious, as I was, that although this is account bound, and needs not be equipped, it will not work across realms. I note this, because the account wide reputation bonus for being revered, does work across servers (and factions). I noted the latter while doing dailies on my Horde toon on Aegwynn, but had never mined a gem on my alliance toons on Misha.

So for anyone wondering... this does not work the same way the "faction" commendations do.

Just an edit.. From 775 ores mined, including 745 ghost iron and about 30 trillium, allowing 60 that i may have had in my bags, so figuring aprox 615 ores mined, I got 2 gems. These are FREE gems for doing what I was doing anyway without the mining pick. BONUS!

The time was 11:58pm and i had been told by a few guildies that rare items/mobs seem to spawn after a realm restart, so i went onto my miner and started to ride to the greenstone quarry so when the servers came back up i might be lucky to have it spawn somewhere near me the servers were going to shut down in around 2 minutes, i reached the cave with 1 minute until the servers shut down, i was going to log off but i decided to explore the cave just encase it was there, by this time there was around 45 seconds left till the restarts started. Casually running around killing the mobs, off in the distance i see sparkles i start to run to it, if it was just a vain no big deal i get some ghost iron and if it was the pick im in luck. Then i see in the chat that the servers were shutting down in 10 seconds. I start running to it and see that it is the pick. i was so excited and just as i was getting closer i could hear in my head 6, 5, 4, 3...i am so close to it now i have been trying to get this pick for over 3 weeks now, i right click the pick and the loot tab opens then bam! my heart is pounding.....you have been disconnected. I don't know if it was looted or not, ill just have to wait and see when servers are back up.

Ok, so I have had this for a bit (2-3 weeks, mining almost every node I come across) and always keep it in my bags or even equipped when I mine, but I have yet to get any Pandaren gems while mining. It seems to me this is just another item to sit in your bag taking up space, I really hope I am just that unlucky. Thought I would add my comment in case some of you are having the same luck.

This is pretty much a confirmation of the "find gems" proc rate. I have yet to receive a gem from mining in Panda. I am well over 200 nodes (stopped counting at 200) with no proc.

So, if you are camping this for the extra gems, then don't. Unless the proc rate is improved, then your time is better spent doing other things.

My method of finding the Mining Pick was to camp my rogue (one of my inactive toons) at one of the two spawn points. Two times a day, I would log him in and stealth to the other spawn point. It took about 21 days to find it.

So I got this on my druid. But I am not getting the +10 skill bonus while having it in bag. It worked on my DK miner though.
I guess it is because the pick is an axe and druids cannot equip axe. (Yeah I know I does not have to be equipped, that is the thing.) But anyway I feel robbed :(.
So I bought a classic white mining pick and with both in my bags I went to farm ghost iron. This way I had my +10 mining bonus and to my surprise I found a gem inside a deposit.

This item doesn't seem to work with classes that can't equip axes. I have mining on a lvl 90 warlock and I'm not getting the +10 mining skill from this item when it's in my bags. If I buy a normal mining pick I gain +10 mining, when I vendor the mining pick it's lost again even though I have this item in my bags the whole time.

So if it's not giving classes that can't equip axes the mining skillups then I doubt that finding free gems works on those classes either.

First post here, signed up because I had a really weird thing happen with this item today and want to see if anyone else has had the same thing happen.

I've been camping this thing for like a week now off and on, and I've probably have put in 10-15 hours. Finally today it appears in the rock at the 44.1, 27 spawn location. I mouse hover over it, get the cogwheel, and try to loot it. My character bends down like he's looting it but then nothing happens - no loot box, no "are you sure you want to loot this" confirmation box, nothing...but it's still there. I then try to loot it again..STILL nothing...but this time it completely disappears.

I'm thinking its a phase issue or something, but I've reloaded, I've relogged, etc., etc., and it never reappeared. There were no other players in sight of the item so I don't think a different phased player snagged it first. I didn't hesitate on looting it either so I really don't think that is the case.

Anyway I put in a ticket..mostly because I don't want to camp this item if this is just going to happen again. But IMO I don't think Blizz will do anything just because there's no easy way to prove it was there or that I should have looted it but it bugged out.

Anyone had this happen? I'm just really disappointed at this point because while I havn't camped it for that long its still 10-15 hours wasted. If its a phase thing I am really pissed, because there are so many times where a mailbox or an npc phases out on me...even in org...for no apparent reason. They really need to fix this system if it is indeed a phasing issue.

Edit: My ticket was finally answered and Blizz said that there has been this issue with this item and they awarded it to my character. Thank goodness!

This has got to be almost useless. If you happen to pick it up by chance, and you have space in your bags I guess you might as well keep it, but it sure isn't worth actively seeking out. In the last couple of days since I found it, I have spent about 5 hours mining Ghost Iron/Trillium and in well over 1000 Ghost and 100 Trillium, it proc'd just one Primordial Ruby and one Pandaren Garnet. Pffft!

Looted this last night (04-12-2013 around 1am) with no problems. Good thing too because even after reading about the disappearing issue I forgot to take a screenshot. It was in the area where it appears to spawn most often on the map so kindly provided by lilnekochan.

It sparkles like normal loot if you were wondering. No gear cog displayed on the minimap or any other hint that it was there other than the sparkle. I mined ghost iron and picked up some nice drops from the bugs while I was waiting. Hung around for about an hour. The Ghost Iron nodes have long respawn timers so it is really not worth it to wait around too long. It was the middle of the night and I was bored so I figured I would waste an hour...and it paid off.

I immediately went mining and got 3 gems in the first 20 minutes. One on my very first node mined with the pick in my bag. Maybe they fixed the rng in recent patches.

p.s. I left the lowbies running quests alone but still a couple fresh 85's decided to jump me. When they realized their combined attack couldn't outdamage my health regen they freaked out. I had to kill them of course even though they begged for mercy. Fresh 85's taking on an ilvl 495 90 - sheesh. Point being be prepared for some pvp action if you camp the area.

There is a "FLAG - quest" ( FLAG - Ancient Pandaren Mining Pick ) for picking this up - so you can only do it once per toon - ever.
Here's a little macro you can run to see if you've already done it.

A result of true means that you have it already, and false means you haven't picked it up yet.

From the screenshots, it seems that there are 3 possible spawn locations. Look at the screenshots, and match up them up. There's no need to camp an entire half of the cave.

I have reason to believe the pick's proc (I.E., a gem drop in your vein) was recently buffed in some way. I picked up a whooping total of 2 gems from all the veins while leveling from 85 to 90 (and that's a lot of veins -- this was before the vein spawnrate nerf).

Compared to that, I picked up 4 gems in the past 20 veins during one of my Trillium farms. While not conclusive, I do feel it's been buffed. That or I'm abysmally lucky.

EDIT- I did however notice that it was NOT sparkling like a quest item. My graphics are maxed out, and all quest items sparkle as normal but this was not. Perhaps this was changed. Anyhow, it really does stick out as it is visually different than the other tools laying around the mine.

Great, random story about this thing.

So, I would occasionally check the mine just to see if the pick was there. It's not something I obsessed about, or even did every day, but I knew the thing was in there, and that it would be helpful to own, since I do a lot of mining on several characters. As a result, I popped in there today on a whim just to see if it had spawned.

I get down to the bottom level of the mine and am running around tagging spiders and peeking at the various spawn points when this orc DK comes running up to me and starts furiously attacking. It's a PvP server, but for some reason this guy seems absolutely determined -- moreso than usual -- to down me. Unfortunately for him, I'm better geared and a lot more resilient, and it's a fairly easy fight. I don't even blow CDs.

So, he dies but doesn't release, and I turn around and... there's the pick, sticking out of a rock. I was literally right on top of it.

So, this poor orc was fighting his heart out trying to get the thing, and I flatten him and then loot it right in front of him. I'm not sure if there's a moral to this story or anything, but it was one of the more epic, in-your-face kills I've ever had in 8 years of playing.

It seems possible this has been changed. I've been mining for a week with this thing and getting just the occasional gem. Today, after only 45 minutes I have 7 blues and 3 greens. Unless my luck has swung dramatically, I'm going to hazard a guess that this was somehow hotfixed to up the gemming rate. If so, it's just become far more valuable.

Got a single Jade sauvage on my fifth ghost iron node after obtaining the pickaxe. This node was also the first Rich node after i obtained the pickaxe. Skill level at the time: 335

Some people are just luckier than others, i suppose. Probably a sign that the rate for gems isn't affected by your actual skill level?

I've been mining with this item every chance I find ore for about a week and have yet to see a single gem. Is the chance to find a gem super low? I also have the Gnomish Army Knife in my bags, is this possibly affecting the gem drop? I mean, am I mining with the pick or the knife? Does this even matter? I don't have to equip either item to be able to use them, so does one take precedence over the other? I guess I will try putting the knife in my bank and see what happens.

If you are hunting this for the "chance" to get gems while you mine, don't bother. This thing is a piece of CRAP and not worth the effort trying to find. However if you're after the achievements, knock yourself out. I've got this on 2 of my toons. One just got lucky while questing in the cave. The other, I actually went looking for the mining pick and got very lucky on my first try.

Why is this a piece of crap? I've done 2 long runs of farming Ghost Iron in the Valley of the Four Winds. The first time about a week ago, I farmed about 560 ores. I got 3 gems. Today, I farmed 603 ores. ZERO gems. If I was short on bag space this thing would be in the bank.

I've had a lot of gems dropping recently - far more than I've ever had before. Haven't really mined all that much, just some trillium and rich ghost iron deposits here and there. This item does NOT stack its +10 mining bonus with ANY other items... not the Gnomish Army Knife, not the normal Mining Pick, not the Seismic Bore, and MOST IMPORTANTLY IT DOES NOT STACK WITH OTHER ANCIENT PANDAREN MINING PICKS. I have four of them on my account from various alts, and putting them all into one character's bags along with the army knife and bore still only gave a total of +10.

I think many people may not realize the benefit of this item outside of the +10 mining bonus and the "random chance at gem"

This is one of the only weapons with > 200 Strength on it that a newly dinged 85 can use.

Great for handing immediately to an alt, versus buying one of the other crafted or rare drop level 85 weapons from the AH.

My DK isn't a miner but I still kept this item for when he dinged 85

I've had this item in my backpack for about 2 months now, when I first got it like many here I was considering vendoring it, but I'm glad I did not!
I'd recommend to all, that you keep it in your back pack for a month before you deciding what to do with it. Personally I've made around 400Gold in 2 months from the Gem's this Mining Pick has provided.

Well worth the 1 Item Backpack slot in my opinion, especially when you get the surprise of a valuable gem.

I have this on every one of my 3 level 90 miners, all of which have 600 mining and cumulatively I've mined hundreds of nodes all over Pandaria, yet I've mined maybe 20 gems in all of that and none of them were high quality. Today alone I've hit at least 100 nodes and not a single gem. Every one of my gathering characters has the gnomish army knife, so I'm thinking of putting this in the bank to save a bag slot. Considering the hours I've spent getting these I'm disappointed in the lack of payoff.

Actually there are a lot of people that are into the role playing part of wow. The farmer outfit is probably the most known, and of course transmogging your main set of gear. With that said, this is used as part of the miner's set. Due to the fact that it is a 1-handed axe, you can use the Eerie Stable Lantern Lanterne d'écurie sinistre as an offhand.

*Trillium and Kyparite were not recorded by my addon, I usually don't track them so it was a mistake on my part. I personally recorded all gem drops as they happened, while thinking the data was done by addon.

From the above data, farming Kyparite veins, rich of course, is the BEST way to get this low drop rate to increase significantly.

Maybe I'm just having a string of crazy luck today or perhaps, just perhaps something happened with the patch this week (5.4.8) and this item that wasn't reflected in the patch notes. I've had this Pick on my warrior since shortly after MoP release and my gems from mining have been just as rare as those mentioned in the comments here. I remember looking them up way back then. Sometimes I forget it's in my bag until every few weeks a gem drops.

A couple weeks ago I got a 2nd Pick on my DK and I think I got 1 gem since then, but starting yesterday I had a couple drop and then today I've had over a half a dozen gems (a couple high quality) drop just from the casual "on the way" mining that I typically do. We're talking over a few hours while doing dailys, pet battles, afk'n, Timeless Isle, etc... I'm not even farming, I've maybe gathered up 5-6 stacks of ore total today. That's not many nodes!

Just leaving this here to see if anyone else has noticed anything different with this pick since 5.4.8 dropped.

Was searching the mine for 30 minutes + so i asked my friend ally to inv to his low populated realm and found it instantly! Worth trying if your struggling to find this one! :)

Got this just now on Duskwood at 64.04,56.24 at 5:10 am. It was across from the stairs, stuck in a rock just left of a cart and basket.

I spent weeks looking for it, I was starting to think it was glitched! So glad I kept hunting.

I was able to get this in about 5 hours just by circling the spots on the map provided in another comment. I didn't spend the whole 5 hours looking for it either. I circled a few times. left, did something in another area and came back. then I logged off for 15 mins or so and went back. I saw about 3 or 4 people near and in the cave at one point and I found the pick about 20 minutes later. Also, I was able to get a gem from a ghost iron node after about 30 minutes of mining. I maybe mined 10 ghost iron nodes and got a jade jewel.

I found mine inside the mine (38, 14) in a pile of jade. On the map of the mine, in the top left-hand corner, there's an obvious green blob drawn; that marks the pile of jade. Good luck, hope it helps. :D

I have found this item a few times. 2 of the times I found it at approx. 38.51, 16.65 on a pile of rubble behind one of the trapped pandaren. Today I found this pick in a different place exactly diagonal from this spot at approx. 44.59, 39.15 in the wall where a few rocks are near the mining cart. I was surprised to see it here because i had hopped a couple times and came back to my server and here it was. I only saw it because I had been fighting the nibblers and was distracted from my search and bam! there it was.
I think the Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne is similar to the Journal détrempé and the Ancien charme de pêche pandaren in that once you have it you can't see another one. idk if these reports are accurate but I have tried to find the Pioche de mineur pandaren ancienne on a character that has previously attained one and was unable to find it on that character or on a character that has one in their inventory.

Is it just me or this treasure is removed? I also went searching for the staff, in the river, and I have handy notes, still didn't find nothing. Is anyone having the same problem?

If you look at the screenshots of the Pick before it is looted, you will notice they all have a particular three-rock cluster feature. This is a recurring piece artwork texture throughout the mine, 1 rock on top of two. There are at least a dozen and they can be jade green or stone gray. (You might also notice a number of, but not all, Ghost Iron Ore nodes spawn near this feature as well.) The Pick will be in or very near one of those (at least based on my experience and the submitted screenshots).

Anyway, circle around paying attention to these motifs. Took me about 10 mins to get it to spawn today (May 2017)

Does anyone know of a macro to check if this has been looted before on a character please? I 'retired' in the early stages of MoP and only came back November 2017. I don't recall if I ever looted it and I haven't seen it whilst actively hunting it. Thanks!

Went to Pandaria, mining a lot of Gisement d’ectofer and always popping by the cave to search for this pick.
Finally find it - go to test it and find..... it didn't really do anything?
Read the actual description - only works for level 85+ :(
Guess I better go level up a little before going hardcore mining again :)

Doesn't actually provide the +10 to mining that it states - unless this is specific to Pandaria only? In which case, is is cumulative with the standard pick which provides the +10 anywhere?

Coz otherwise, aside from the "allows you to find gems" what's the point of this? Let's find out...

The easiest and fastest way to get this item is to make a trial character on an RP realm. Hearth to Orgimmar or Stormwind, then do the starting quest to go to Pandaria. Once there, go to the cave and it should be there. It looks like an axe that sparkles. Easy to find.

I have tested this 3 times with friends and it has always worked. RP realms are not cross realm so this item should be up quite often.

Found today coords 40,40 inside Greenstone Quarry (entrance is SE of Tian Monastery (approximately 47, 29) in The Jade Forest) I ran around for about an hour or two last week and did not see it. I logged in today (Kil'Jaeden, Horde) and there it was ! Best of luck to anyone looking for this item ~~

This really needs to be a toy! Its a PITA to remember which of my characters has it, and there is NO good reason why it cannot be a toy accessible to all characters on the account after you go through the trouble of doing the quest and finding the darn thing.

I just found it in the lower map of the quarry after running around for 30 mins or so.
The coords (inside the lower quarry) are 40, 41.
No quest opened up for me, whatsover.

This one took me two days of camping to finally get it. Either I'm really really really unlucky, or someone was totally spying on me and looting when I was on food and bio breaks.... Regardless, I use the ATT addon which gave me 4 potential spawn points for the pick. It spawned for me today at /way 33.70 77.45 stuck in a trio of boulders. There is a mining cart with glowing green crystals at its left, and a trapped Greenstone Miner (poor guy, he is dying, but all he cares about is you slowing down) is at its right. If you are looking for the pick, please understand that it does NOT spawn in the obvious locations like, on top of an already placed mining pick, it will have its own place, and you will notice it, because it will have lots of glow and sparkles. Tip: This mining pick can spawn in many different places within the Greenstone Quarry cave area. If it's not up, port to Orgrimmar with your guild cloak, turn on war mode, and take the portal back to Jade Forest. At this phase in the lifecycle, far fewer people play with war mode on, and your odds of finding rares are increased. This mining pick is BOA so you can transfer it to your alts. It gives +10 mining just sitting in your inventory, which keeps nodes and recipes orange for longer (allowing faster skill-ups), so it's a pretty nice item to have in general.

I also highly recommend the treasures of Pandaria handynotes plugin. It has everything and really reduces the need to tab out and check wowhead for info.

Clearly this has degraded over time, as it gives less Mining Skill than a regular Pioche de mineur!
