you get a you cannot mail items with a limited duration message, although there isn't any indication of a duration on the item ... and it isn't soulbound, anyway.

That's it: A duration that is so limited it has no values, that's the ultimate duration limitation; it can't get shorter than that.

One can assume that there is a "hidden duration", at the end of which the item will disappear. Or the message might simply be a bug and the item won't ever disappear.

I believe the latter is the case. There's no hidden duration, because the item has no use that depends on a duration, and it doesn't disappear from the inventory after a certain period of time, like f.ex. the Rein Deer mount at Winter Veil.

...I tried to mail it too, by the way. I really believe i's just one of those random details in the game that has never been corrected, and never will be corrected.

didn't there used to be a quest that started from a broken (magical) amulet?

I got mine from a quest in Blasted Lands.

If I remember correctly it was a quest that took place inside a cave with some long tunnels. Quest Giver was a gnome, but the mobs were a mix of Horde and Alliance.

I'm not sure if this item has any other significance for the quest than being in your containers when you turn in the quest. However, my Auctioneer says the items has been sold on AH a number of times for around 15 to 18 gold.

Edit: I just noticed the Broken Amulet is classified as Consumable. The only thing I could associate with any concrete use of this item, is at the very first quest in the quest line, where you are told to use a "Blood Stone Portal" from the inside of the cave to it's immediate outside, and then back again, by clicking on two bright pink colored rocks, one at the center of the cave, where Quest Giver is located, and the other immediately outside by the cave wall east of the entrance, facing towards the sea.

If I hear this confirmed by others ingame I'll come back and leave a note. Otherwise I'll have to wait until I begin leveling my alt.

I found this item while doing low level quests on my85 hunter. I had done all the quests previously but when Cataclysm hit I had to re-do many of them . As of Patch 4.1" The Broken Amulet" is still saying "This doesn't seem to be magical at all..." and is still not doing anything. So if you have room in your bank it might be worth keeping for the novelty of having it. However if you are like me and your bank is already full of "novelty items" then best to dis-guard it and move on.

I got on a banker toon I have not been on in what seems like forever and found one of these in its GBank and figured I had better come here to check it out. Thanks all, for the info, it is going to be deleted now.

This item breaks the new "Sell All Junk" button.
The button doesn't sell any junk, and errors with "the vendor doesn't want that item".
Once you delete this item, you can Sell All Junk again.
