There is a chance to discover "Optional Reagent" recipes during an Ingénierie "Tinker Malfunction". The 10-minute on-use cooldown for these tinkers will reset after killing a raid boss. A good practice for triggering these discoveries is to clear older raid content for more malfunction chances. The following are all of the recipes that can be discovered, including their respective quailty level.

Does anyone know what the actual difference is between this one and the other tiers? It doesn't mention what the difference is anywhere.

I chose "The tinker slotted in this device cannot catastrophically malfunction." However, of the five times I've tried to Brez, I've been turned into a mouse/rat 3 of the 5 times. I assume that's a buff/debuff applied and I can't just right-click it to remove it, but it's always been so hectic I haven't had time to look at much.

I also assumed the catastrophe prevention was going to prevent debuffs things like that from happening. If it doesn't, just what is it preventing? Is the catastrophe that you die if it malfunctions or just take 80% of your hp as damage or something? In all three cases it backfired, I've been killed as it effectively polymorphs/stuns you for several seconds, which makes using the bracers an unjustifiable risk. Me dying caused wipes and in one case cost us the key.

Is there a better option to use? I am not sure what the discharges battery (just puts it on CD and nothing happens at all? If so, that'd be MUCH preferable to me dying from being polymorphed) or 15% less likely to have a catastrophe options are for comparison.

There's not a lot of info about this yet, so here's what I've gathered so far:

Success is NOT guaranteed.

There's a reddit thread talking about how this brez tinker is only a CHANCE, and is no longer the guaranteed eng brez from previous expansions.

Of particular note is Removebyfriction's post:

I'm an engineer and yesterday this tinker failed 5 times in a row during one single boss fight - I got polymorphed by it, knocked back a few times, and once it almost killed me. It's nice when it works, but sadly it doesn't work more often than it does.

All this said, a chance is still better than NO brez if your comp doesn't have one.

*edit: For comparison, here's my own success rate so far: 5 out of 5 successful brezzes. This was as an engineer using Unité de prévention des défaillances critiques (as I had specialized in something far from Inventions), using silver quality Bricolage : correcteurs à décharge vitaux, and no other tinkers anywhere.

How to raise your brez success rate (or at least die less):

If you're an engineer:

Option A:
1. Have both the engineering-crafted helm and bracers. (Helm requires engineering to wear.) Socket Bricolage : circuit conducteur in one, and Bricolage : correcteurs à décharge vitaux in the other. Bricolage : circuit conducteur seems to guarantee success before it goes on CD (duration currently unknown), so that's your best chance at ONE guaranteed brez in a fight. If suddenly someone dies again, though, refer to the next option:

Option B:
1. Spec into the engineering specialty Mechanical Mind > Inventions - specialization. This gives you the passive "Your tinkers can no longer drastically malfunction", making it no longer necessary to have Unité de prévention des défaillances critiques.
2. You can then have Interrupteur de sûreté calibré built in when making your bracers.
3. Use the highest quality Bricolage : correcteurs à décharge vitaux you can afford, because it probably has different failure rates per quality (unproven--more info needed) as the hp rez amount stays the same.

If you're NOT an engineer:
I'd suggest using Unité de prévention des défaillances critiques when making the bracers. At least it won't kill you when it backfires.

How to use this without engineering?

Check out the following bracers crafted by engineering, which do NOT require engineering to wear:

They start at 384 and go up to 418, just like the other spark of ingenuity crafted gear. Just find an engineer who specializes in these and send them a crafting order.

I was really interested in how well tinkers worked when you maxed out your 4 tinker anti-failure nodes (35/40 Mechanical Mind spec node, Unlocking Inventions subspec, 30/40 Inventions subspec node and Generalist 35/40 subspec node) as well as crafting my equipment with Calibrated Safety Switches (Reduced likeliness of tinker failing by 15%) and here are my findings so far.

With 3/4 of anti-fail nodes (missing the Generalist node) and Calibrated Safety Switches, my Rank 3 (2s cast) Vital Correctors worked 6 out of 7 times. The one fail, I was poly'd for 4 seconds.

I now have the last ant-fail node and I will post and update my findings as I continue to use the vital correctors in content.

UPDATE: I now have 2 engineers, one has ALL of the anti-fail nodes and 1 is missing the last one in Optimized Efficiency. Here are my stats so far:

Bres: 12/13 w/o the last Opt Eff. node

Bres: 16/17 w/ all tinker nodes

Breath: 36/41 w/ all nodes unlocked

Breath: 14/17 w/o the last Opt Eff. node

ANOTHER UPDATE: If your group has battle res's left, YOUR TINKER WILL NOT GO ON COOLDOWN meaning you can double bres during the same fight (for example).

I've got all the MM nodes, all the inventions and the one in Generalist and have'nt seen a failure since i ticked of the last one in Generalist.
My guess is its like 5%/node.

One thing i did which i regret this expansion is to max out the tinker tree to increase the success chance straight away when expansion launch. I've always have the plan to max out tinker usage due to the brez. So i have not failed once this whole expansion as i use it.

The reason that i regret is that i do not know how to .....discover those safety parts as they are discovered when you fail using engineering tinkers... XD

There's a debuff from the catastrophically malfunction category named Arclight Energy Surge that forbid the use of the tinker for 6 hours, so yeah in case anyone came here wondering why they couldnt use their tinker and the button grey out on their bar.

Sadly to use this you have to be pretty close, like 3-4 yd max

Did a quick test between rank2 and rank3 to check out the cast time specifically, as some people have talked about the cast time being different.

Both ranks take 2.5 seconds to cast.
